Comfortember Day 17. Insomnia
Spooky Scary Spiders
Summary: Tony rescues Peter from a spider in his room.
Read on AO3
Peter blinked up at the ceiling, jaw cracking as another yawn built up in his chest. It felt like he'd been staring up at his ceiling and walls for hours already. He'd tried tossing, turning, swapping pillows, using a difficult blanket, but still, sleep decided to evade him.
Just as he thought he would nod off, Peter's body jerked and his sleep tired and burning eyes snapped back open. Peter was exhausted and couldn't find a single reason as to why he couldn't sleep. He wasn't having anymore nightmares than usual, he hadn't had any foods that might have given him energy, he wasn't too wound up from his anxiety either.
There was nothing that he could think of that was causing his sleeplessness. It wasn't even his insomnia; with that, he was genuinely wide awake and sometimes not even tired.. But this time he was exhausted. His eyes would start drooping, body relaxing right to the edge between waking and sleeping. And just as every other time that night, Peter was jerked back awake. He couldn't get himself to relax, some kind of energy continually thrumming through his body.
He turned over on his side again, eye catching on the smallest movement on the far wall of his room.
Oh hell no.
Peter yelped, darting from his bed and getting tangled in his blankets as he tried to get off his bed. And get off his bed he did, right on the floor, trapped in his blankets as he fell with a thud. He struggled to a second before he managed to free himself and practically flew up the wall behind his bed.
He was perched in the corner of the ceiling when he heard footsteps in the hall, and his door creep open to show Tony standing in all his confused, hall light bathed glory.
"Kid, what are you doing?" Tony looked up at him.
Instead of answering immediately, Peter lifted his hand and pointed to the wall opposite him and hissed.
Oh. Oh. This was amazing.
On the wall was a spider. A spider that was apparently the cause for Peter’s amusing behaviour. Tony looked between Peter and the spider, his eyes flicking back to Peter just as the spider moved, scuttling speedily up the wall and across the ceiling towards Peter.
Said teen let out a squeak, almost falling from the ceiling as he crawled away from the spider. "Mr Stark! It's gonna eat me!" He cried with wide eyes, now clinging to the wall behind Tony as the man lost the battle with the amusement of the situation and started laughing.
"Peter! Kid, I love you, but that thing isn't nearly capable of eating you." His shoulders shook with the force of his laughs.
Peter frantically shook his head, watching the spider as if it was the devil itself. "Nuh uh. It's after me, Mr Stark." He shrieked when it started moving towards him again, and dropped down, grabbing onto Tony's back like a koala and pointing at it.
"Get it away! Please. It's evil. Its after me. Its gross beady eyes are watching me!"
"Peter, it's a daddy long legs! It's not going to do anything to you, it's harmless." Tony started laughing again, but still wrapped his arms around Peter's legs, holding him up in his koala position on his back.
"I don't care if it couldn't even eat a fly, I want it gone. Pleeeeease, Tony!"
The man huffed out another laugh. "Okay, okay. Fine. I'll get rid of the spider for you. Can you get off my back? I'm going to have to get closer to it."
Peter pouted but did as he was asked, slipping down and back up to the door, eyes never once leaving the spider which was now back on the wall it had originally been spotted on. He only calmed when Tony grabbed one of his shoes and squished the spider, grabbing a tissue to clean the spider gunk from the bottom.
The second the spider was gone, it was as if the energy in Peter's body was suddenly sapped away. His eyes grew heavy once again and he yawned. He didn't realise he'd closed his eyes until he felt Tony's hand guiding him back to his bed.
He let the man push him back into bed and help him lift the covers back over himself. Peter blinked up at him. "It was the spider. Couldn't sleep cuz of it. Meanie."
Tony smiled down at him, brushing a hand over his hair. "The spiders gone, Bud. You can get back to sleep now. No more meanie spiders out to get you."
Peter hummed, eyes slipping closed. "Thank you." He murmured, voice so quiet Tony almost didn't hear him.
Leaning down, Tony brushed a hand through his kid's hair one more time before pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Sleep well, Peter."
With that, he turned back to leave the room, closing the door quietly behind him as he went off to his own bed.
