Baby Tears

He didn't understand.

The mute mutterings, the mourning eyes, the cold tears.

The black suits and gowns, the tolling chapel's bell, or the sadness on his aunt's face.

All this grief and heartache.

It confused him. His young, naïve, 7-year-old mind couldn't understand it at all.

Couldn't understand the weight and meaning of the funeral.

Or the not-funeral. The adults sometimes called it a memorial. Not that he knew the difference.

He's heard the people speak. Heard them whisper and mourn. Listened with only half an ear to the priest's honourings.

Words of empathy overlapped. A hymn of condolences, speeches, and formal utterances.

Above the lull and sway of confusing words, only one phrase had stuck to him.

"Missing and never found."

The service ended, and friends and family stuck around for one last vigil.

Little blue eyes searched the crowd, looking for the familiar face of his aunt. A man held his little hand, a friend of theirs, keeping him from wandering off.

He spotted his aunt back over at the memorial, littered with photos and candles. He nearly didn't recognise her usually chipper face behind the mask of thinly veiled tears.

The yellow boy tugged at the man's hand, wanting to go over to her. Blue eyes looked up when the man didn't budge.

"I'm sorry, little lad," the green man intoned, the sadness in his own voice muffled by the rain. "Your auntie just needs some space."

The boy's only response was a saddened pout, gazing over at his aunt again. At her despondent figure, kneeling above a picture of two faces he could hardly recognise anymore.

"Auntie Spheria," the little boy murmured that evening back at their home.

"When are they coming back?"

She had gone numb, frozen in her step. Halfway from reaching for the pan in the cupboard, dinner barely prepared.

In her limp silence, she didn't answer him. Couldn't answer him from behind the fresh look of heartbreak on her face.

The little boy's face fell. He had made her sad again.

Little feet trudged over to her side, and the young orb tucked himself under his aunt's arm, wrapping his arms around her waist. Giving comfort, while also seeking comfort.

The kitchen held its breath. A dreary silence.

A warm hand tucked the little boy closer, holding him as though to protect him from the weight of his unanswered questions. His aunt swallowed a sob.

He won't understand. The little boy wouldn't understand for a very long time.

That his mother and father have been missing for years.

And may never come back.

Evil Pacster full body reference!

I'm having too much fun writing this AU. I still need to fix some stuff but for now I'm leaving some important notes about it here:

Pacster isn't friends with Spiral or Cyllindria. This is because he is always in a bad mood and hates everything and everyone.

When Pac freed the ghosts by accident, Stratos send him alone to fight Betrayus. He later regreted this decision when Pacster didn't return (mf why did you send a child to fight your highly dangerous war criminal brother, huh????)

While he doesn't hate his aunt, Pac resents her due to Spheria hiding information and things about his parents and their past. This was an attempt of Spheria to protect her nephew, but ended up backfiring.

Spheria loves and cares about Pac and tried her best to raise him as best as she could, but for several reasons and problems, Spheria failed at many things that ended up affecting Pac.

Betrayus originally wanted to kill Pac when he captured him, but saw a chance to turn him into a ruthless soldier that would work for him, so he decided to let Pac live and take him under his protection/mentorship.

Pacster gives some of his power berries to Buttocks, so he can study and duplicate them. After some trial and error, the doctor finally succeeds in replicating the power berries and can mass produce them. This will be important later in the story.

Betrayus ordered Buttocks to create a breathing mask for Pacster so he could stay in the Netherworld without having to constantly eat power berries. Pac has a badge on his nose since it started to grow an injury due to having to wear the mask 24/7, only taking it off to eat or drink.

Betrayus answers all of Pac's questions about his parents and things about the past, but always twisting the truth in a way he isn't directly lying but skips "details" along the process, making him look in a better light in Pac's eyes while trashing everyone else's image in the process.

Pinky doesn't have a crush on Pac. The Ghost Gang are afraid of him and Pacster couldn't care less about them.

PMATGA Headcanons: Surnames

This thing has been a headscratcher for as long as I have been a fan of the show. Or it might be just me-

But I've always struggled to imagine what some of the characters' surnames/last names could be. Especially the main trio. Mostly because it's tricky to come up with surnames that would fit them, and something in line with the show's running theme of naming things after geometry or character-specific quirks.

We know that Stratos' last name is Spheros (derived from stratosphere) and thus it's also Betrayus' surname. We know of Mr Strictler, who only revealed his surname and never his first name, so we can deduce that Sherry's last name is Strictler (she's his daughter). Then there's Mr Dome, Ms Globular, Sir Cumference, etc. But other than these characters, we never really heard of any other surnames mentioned in the show.

There is Spheria Suprema, and hey it could be probable that that is her surname, but I'm leaning a bit more towards the idea that it's her celebrity name/Pac-Pong champion title/nickname rather than her actual given surname. The chances of Spheria being given a name that rhymes with a descriptive title such as 'Suprema' at birth is a little slim if you ask me (this is just my rationalisation, don't come at me xD)

So that leaves us with the rest of the cast. I've seen some really creative attempts from the fandom to give the characters their surnames. So much so that I can't really come up with any good ones in comparison xD

But hey, these are the best I could come up with, along with some headcanons or reasons for why I chose them. Subject to change!

Pac Orbon (Yellow Orbs, duh...)

Cylindria Eden (based on the Garden of Eden, and sounds hippy-ish)

Spiral Logarith (based on the logarithmic spiral in math)

Elliptica Spheros (her mother kept her last name)

Sir Perimet Cumference (his first name is based on perimeter (of a circle), which can be shortened to 'Peri' but he still prefers 'Sir C')

Trayus Rotundin Spheros (he changed it to Betrayus Sneakerous Spheros as part of his rebellion-turned-revolt)

Zac Orbon (again, yellow orbs...)

Sunny Orbon (maiden name was Sunny Solari - a play on sol and solar, from the sun - which is also round and yellow)

Spheria Solari (tends to go by Spheria Suprema, her celebrity name, since that's what many people know her as)

Specter Eidolon (greek for 'idol' or 'phantom')

Blinky "Shadow" Scarlos (based on 'scarlet')

Inky "Bashful" Whimson (based on 'whimsical')

Pinky "Speedy" Chacier (Old French for "chase/hunt")

Clyde "Pokey" Oren (just based on orange, but can also have different meanings depending on the language)

[The Ghost Gang's names are a combination of lore that I've found relating to the original Pac-Man games. For example, Inky's original name in the retro games was Bashful, and his Japanese name is kimagure, which means 'whimsical', hence Whimson.]
