Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 14
Finally finished up the embroidery for the first patch I had started working on before, and then did another because only having one felt kinda weird. They came out so nice and I'm so happy about them. Using tweezers to get the tissue paper out was an interesting challenge to say the least.
I was widening the original pattern so I could keep the patchwork intact (we're gonna gather up at the top) so that using the pattern to cut the crotch divot and figure out where the pockets should go, and then using the cut out patchwork pieces to help figure out what the lining pieces should be shaped like. (We're doing a lining because having that many patchwork seams on my leg sounds like a sensory nightmare.
I was relieved because it turned out that I had enough lining material left over for the pockets. I was initially worried I was going to have to like...patchwork together that fabric scraps I had to create this, but no!

Dndads Teen Headcanons
(It got kinda outta hand, and these aren’t even the angst ones…)
Hermie curls their hair and Taylor straightens his (but because of the adventures neither of them have been able to do it so they’re slowly reverting back to their original state)
Hermie uses they/them pronouns when not in a roll and Dood uses they/it
Normal and Hero have watched Adult Swim shows from a really young age (Lark, Sparrow, and Rebecca either didn’t care enough to turn off Cartoon Network, or just didn’t realize)
Linc and Hermie were PBS kids
Taylor is always playing games on his Chromebook at school (coolmathgames rules)
Taylor has a ton of pins on his jacket and hat
Scary has a TON of birthmarks, freckles, moles all over her body. It’s gorgeous

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 17
Alright in the home stretch, everything is coming together and I'm fighting how tired my job makes me to keep making progress.
So we sew the totally not homestuck pockets onto the butt portion of the pants.
Then we deviate from the pattern to create a waist band. I wanted to keep up the patchwork look, so I took some scraps and put them together to make the waistband. Then I realized I didn't have my buttonhole foot for my machine and had to search up a youtube tutorial on how to make buttonholes so that my drawstrings had something to go through. I tried a few methods for drawstrings but was having a hard time making them work, so I just folded some bias tape in half, finally got to use the leaf pattern design on my machine to add some detail, and sewed the lining and the outer layer together, and then with much stabbing and cursing, got the waist gathered so I could put the waistband on.
This part of the process is very dangerous because you will put the pants on to see how the waist feels and fall in love with how comfy they are even though you're not done. Convincing yourself to take them off again will be an ordeal.
Once again with much cursing and stabbing, I set out to gather and put a border hem thing on the bottoms of the pant legs. And then I was done! And very very happy. My only complaint is that I put the side pockets in a bit low, so my arms don't have to bend to put my hands in them and it feels a little weird, but everything else? Amazing!
I feel like I now need to reveal/shout out @macksartblock for their teen Sparrow drawings that left me going, "I need those pants in my life" before turning into "I'm going to make a whole cosplay based on this fit." Your art is awesome and trying to make this outfit a reality has helped get out of my comfort zone and try new skills in my own craft.

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 12
So after dedicating my creative juices to directing a high school play, and then a smidge of burnout, getting tickets to the live tour kicked me into gear to get back on working on this, but now with a deadline that isn't self-imposed. But in the spirit of deadlines, I recognize that letting myself bounce between different tasks instead of hyperfocusing and just letting myself finish a thing is maybe not the best idea. So I spent the last two weeks conquering patchwork purgatory.
So here's my third panel:

I was getting really tired of pinning these tiny squares together by this point, so I decided to just knuckle through it and safe the longer seams for later instead of putting it together as I went.
Not sure if I'd say it was worth it, but I did learn that having to press this many seams does mean your iron will automatically turn off part way through because it doesn't want to stay on the high setting for that long.
We finally hit our third bobbin of thread, so I feel like my feelings of being in a never ending patchwork landscape are justified.
And then boop and boop! and all four panels are done. THANK FUCK!

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 16
So in a moment that really made me question what I was doing, I spent a lot of time looking at the reference drawing staring at Sparrow's butt intently trying to figure out what the design on his back pocket was. Finally I managed to sketch it out based on what I was able to see. And Then I cut out the shape for the back pockets
I was talking to some buddies on discord and keeping them up to date on my progress when suddenly I was asked if I was familiar with Homestuck.
I am not particularly familiar with homestuck besides knowing that everything can pretty much be related to it in some capacity and whatever was covered in Sarah Z's video on the topic. That being said, I bear no ill will towards Homestuck as a concept.
We talked a bit about weather the design was really a homestuck thing. I thought it looked kinda like tentacles and was probably a doodler reference of some sort, but after some digging and confirming that the fanart I was basing these pants off of was made by an artist who was familiar with homestuck and the similarities were probably not coincidental.
Now, as stated, I don't have any real feelings about homestuck, positive or negative, but what I do have, is a deep fear of people believing me to be more familiar about a subject than I actually am. As unlikely as it might be, the idea that someone could look at my pants pocket, think I was into homestuck, and try to initiate a conversation about it with me, was too much for my social anxiety, so since I had thought it had looked like doodler tentacles from the start, I figured I could tweak the design enough to make it reminiscent of the fan art, but fit more with my original interpretation
So I didn't split the u shape, and then added two more little tendrils to the design and was reassured that this new look was not going to be mistaken for a homestuck reference
I then proceeded to aplique this design on the pocket, which was awful, and I hated it so much, but I do have to admit it looks really good. Then we threw some bias tape around the pocket edges and were good to go!

Sparrow Oak-Garcia Cosplay Part 13
Time for the shirt!
I was horrified to find that this pattern was interested in saving me from buying too much excess fabric which meant I couldn't just put all the pattern pieces on at once, but had to fold and cut, and then fold and cut in a different spot, and then do it a third time. Like I appreciate saving fabric but I do like pinning the pieces all in one go if I can.
I'm so proud of myself because I did this whole thing with french seams and didn't mess up once! I went that route for the seams because this fabric is so comfy but it frays like a motherfucker.
The hood is the reason I picked this pattern, because if you can put a hood on a shirt, why wouldn't you.
I wasn't really happy with the facing for the neckline, but just kept telling myself it was good enough. This is the thing when it comes to making your own stuff, you notice all the imperfections that no one else is going to pay attention to.
The original pattern had the side seams going all the way to the bottom of the shirt, but I opted to put in some side slits because this thing is pretty long on my torso and I'd like to be able to access my pants pockets
This was my first time using my eyelet puncher and I was so nervous. You can rip a seam if something goes wrong (and can I just brag that I didn't fuck up my seams once this whole project? WITH FRENCH SEAMS?????? I am shooketh). So anyway, I was really nervous especially since on my second one the puncher didn't really want to unclasp and was just...stuck to the neckline of the shirt. It opened back up when I stopped being scared of putting a little force into wrenching it back open, but I was close to panicking.
A bonus to the eyelets is also that they really help to cover the wonkiness of the neckline, especially with the ties put in because any lack of symmetry comes off as being due to it being tied kinda weird instead of an inherent structural thing.
I originally was going to do some decorative embroidery on this, but opted to not since the fabric is really stretchy and hard to get a consistent stitch on, which is fine for joining seams, but not if you want to like...make a repeated shape over and over again. So this is now the final product for Sparrow's shirt!

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 10
Shirt
Amazon: You know how we said two to three days two to three days ago? Yeah...still two to three days. In unrelated news, got a text from my sister-in-law asking for sewing advice, which was lovely. Turns out she wants to make a cosplay and I was like...oh! Guess what I'm doing! I let her know that sewing patterns...exist? I dunno where the confusion was tbh. She's starting out entry level but I'm gonna be cheerleading up a storm.
Pants
I keep switching back and forth between patchworking and embroidery to help keep my brain from falling into a rut.
Today we learned that french knots are fun?
And we reached the important milestone of having to refill the bobbin for the first time for this project!!!!!! Here's to many more, I assume!!!!
So we're halfway through the second panel, and this little mandala is coming along quite nicely, and I think I mentioned finding the trick for the lazy daisy stitch before, but I was wrong. I actually figured it out now, and I was being really stupid with my previous method.
Accessories
Keeping on with the Henry bracelet and I'm having so much fun! and look! It's a leaf!!!!! It's an oak leaf pattern!!!! Ahhhhh it's so cute!!!!
I also think I've settled on everyone's bracelet patterns now, so that's exciting to have settled.
For the record, current plans have bracelets for: Henry, Mercedes, Lark, Terry Jr., Nick, Grant, Rebecca, Autumn, and one that Sparrow made for himself. Will it take me forever? Probably. Is that kind of the point? Yes.

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 9
Not as much progress as I would like, but I kinda crashed and burned after so many productive days in a row. I was basically coming home from work and just staring at the ceiling because that's all my brain could handle.
Shirt
Amazon is like, we promise to process your refund in the next 2-3 days, so I'm like...going mad with impatience, but I've checked other sites and the pattern is like three times more expensive and I just am going to slowly lose my mind and it will be fine.
Pants
Going back and forth with more patchwork and then embroidering the last panel.
So we've got another row done for panel two.
I can't get over how awesome all these fabrics are. Like that green patch with the vague leaf shapes, the way that brown one looks kind of like wood...mmm, yes.
And the hand embroidery is fun, though there are some challenges that I didn't see coming.
Finally figured out a trick with a pin that stops the lazy daisy stitches from turning into an absolute mess on the back after a few tries.
Might start looking into starting the pattern for the pockets since those are a bit more intricate and it might be nice to have them done before I really get to really assembling the pants, but I should probably wait until I finish this panel first.
Accessories
Got a bit overconfident with the practice friendship bracelet and fucked it up, but I'm hoping from that I mostly learned the importance of taking your time and never assuming you know what you're doing. So I then hopped into making Henry's bracelet.
I'm only six rows in, but I really like the orange edges, and I like how these threads are not moving around all over the place as much as the last pattern I tried. Here's to hoping I don't fuck it up.

Sparrow Oak Garcia Cosplay Part 5 (boring math edition)

Pants
I was so ready to start cutting the patchwork squares. Absolutely so ready! I had a video tutorial and everything! Then I measured the width of all of the fabric since they shrank varying amounts after being washed and I was suddenly aware that I had no idea what my yardage was once I started cutting it down. And as a dyscalculic nightmare of a human, I started freaking out and turning into the sewing equivalent of this gif.
But after some mild panic I was like okay, let's measure the size of these babies. I quickly realized that I was going to have so much left off since the thinnest piece was 9inches across and I was thinking about doing six inch squares.
Then I remembered that I was altering the pattern because this particular pattern is very confusing in how it's supposed to look and I decided to avoid it entirely.
Like, looking at the line art, I wanted the C pants, but then when they show the C pants in the picture they look nothing like them? And my brain just can't figure out what's going on. So to avoid that uncertainty, I was like...what if I just cut the pattern off at the line before the weird little tulip thingies and just use elastic to bring it in like the view for the D pants. So to ease the process of figuring out how many squares I needed, I bit the bullet and did probably my least favorite step of any sewing project process...tracing my pattern pieces.
I was relieved to find I only needed to trace four pattern pieces (and one was the elastic guide which doesn't really feel like it counts)
I was then trying to decide if it was long enough to satisfy my pants needs, and even though I measured the pattern and then measured it against my legs, I was nervous it was still shorter than I wanted it because I dunno, patterns do that when you put them down. It got to the point where I just straight up took off the pants that I was wearing that were like...around a similar length to what I wanted and put them on the table to compare.
Being like 70% satisfied with that comparison, I then utilized the grid pattern on my craft table to calculate the size of the patchwork panel each piece would need and then did some math to it.
Was it the most precise math? No, but it was imprecise in the direction to err to give me more yardage than calculated. Then I played with two different square sizes. One that was approximately five inches and one that was approximately four inches. The 5 inch version ended up with only 6 panels for the entire height of the pants which felt super underwhelming, so I opted for the four. Then after some math, I got to the result of needing 120 squares (and that would give me a little room to play with the length if I decided the pant legs were too short). I then ran the numbers the square against my fabric and found it would yield 176 squares which was a huge relief because I also wanted to make some panel pockets for the back and knew I needed some wiggle room.
Accessories
Someone brought a bunch of stickers in to work for people to take and I liked that there were Oak leaves in this one. I'm not super sure what or how to incorporate it into something, but figured it might be worth having just in case.
I also remade some Love Wolf kandi with better elastic. So, ta-da!
