I keep seeing people get this twisted, and it's driving me nuts. But I've also never actually talked about it in detail, so that's my fault. So to clear some fiddly terminology Lore up:
"Spacer" in RttS is a generic term for a person living off of a planet. "Tailed spacers" are a clade of genetically modified humans designed for microgravity labor. "Tailers" is a nickname for tailed spacers. "Spacer" is not a nickname for them, it would be like referring to a Frenchman as a "man" for short... because yeah, not false, but that's not the important part of the term. The politically correct name for tailed spacers is rather vague— it's a direct result of their historical clade name ("Simians" or "Simian spacers") being considered a slur in modern day. Tailed spacers are hardly the only GMH or spacers with tails, but the portmanteau "tailer" specifically refers to them in English.
Though, the term "spacer" itself is extremely relative. Anglophones on Earth use it to refer to anyone who lives off of Earth. Anglophones on Mars use it to refer to people who live on moons and in space stations. Anglophones on Luna and other moons use it to refer to people living in space stations. Anglophones living in space stations... are one of the only groups to self identify as spacers. So folks from Nexus Jovia like Talita, Idrisah, and Gillie would consider themselves spacers.

Always to look life in the face and to know it for what it is. At last to know it. To love it for what it is, and then, to put it away. Always the years between us. Always the years. Always the love. Always the hours.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what do the different sophonts call their parents? Like a centaur or bug ferret equivalent of mom/dad/etc?
Many things in thousands of different languages. I will explode and die if I have to make that many conlangs so I'm going to talk about English terms. There's gender neutral endearment terms for parents in English, which often originate from tailed spacer communities, like "per," "parry," and "sasa/zaza/xaxa." These sometimes get transposed onto aliens when referring to their familial relationships, since most Anglophones in RttS refer to aliens as non-gendered, as it's considered polite form. With avians dun and bright tend to get slapped on as a prefix to specify relationships, like brightparent and dunparent. With centaurs most humans would probably just refer to the parents by their clan roles. I.e. matriarch and entourage sire. But humans tend to be quicker to gender centaurs since their sexes function similarly to ours, so automatically gendering matriarchs as feminine isn't uncommon.

My Shepard is a Spacer and I always loved this little detail specific to the background where both Shepard and Garrus ask about each other's missing families.
Shepard reassures him that Castis and Solana will be alright, to which he replies: "That's the thing about getting old, Shepard; the platitudes get just as old"
It's a comment that comes from a place of hurt, of being tired that no one listened to the warnings about the Reaper threat and now many people are dying or missing. He's jaded and denying himself the niceties because he doesn't think that there's much that can be done about it. Still, he feels close enough to Shepard to ask them about their family-
This is the first time I've used flycam for this scene and I didn't realize how worried Shepard looks about not knowing if their mother survived. The original angle doesn't let us see that moment of vulnerability and sadness from Shepard, only Garrus gets to see it, and his reaction to seeing Shepard so worried….is him wringing his hands awkwardly and reassuring them that their mother is okay lol.
It's like seeing Shepard this worried made him come back to himself.

Meanwhile, back in my apartment...
So, I was reading my Calliope intelligence dossier, and came across this:
So, to help get me in character for the Lancer game tomorrow, I've decided to make myself some Spacer salad.
With any luck, I won't mess this up! I'll keep y'all posted. First step: roast the sweet potato.
