Everything I didn't like in Strange New Worlds
I was gonna call this post "everything wrong with strange new worlds" but I realized I'm not actually the center of the universe and my opinion of something isn't automatically right. I don't want to sound like a hater. I already decided I didn't like this show and therefore I'm gonna stop watching it. It's not a big deal. I'm not gonna funnel my focus into things I hate just so I can talk shit about them.
But since I got this far into it before leaving, I thought I'd talk about why I did so, so that fans and non-fans alike can think about it and discuss it. Hopefully you'll remain a fan. You'll just be more deeply aware of your favorite media.
- The ableism.
This show fridged it's blind character for shock value after we had him for only 4 episodes, which is not good. It also didn't even attempt to explore Pike's thoughts about his future in the wheelchair. He just said he's as good as dead and left it at that. Spock's dyslexia wasn't mentioned even once.
- The savage race
That show edgefied the Gorn, who were seen as the silly meme mascots kinda-villains of TOS, to be something gruesome and evil, already disappointed me. But the fact they're being pushed into this narrative of being irredemable savages, flesh-eating monsters, also goes against their original episode in TOS. Like, they were supposed to be a sentient, warp-capable species, just as right or wrong as the humans. I don't think I need to elaborate too much into why "the bloodthirsty savages" is a concept we should have left in the 60s. This isn't any better than the orc-ish portrayal of the Klingons in Star Trek Discovery.
- The inconsistencies (this is a longer one, sorry)
I'm not a purist fan who nitpicks every tiny detail. The things I'm complaining about are just too obvious. Ask any fan of Devil May Cry why the reboot didn't work, and they will tell you it's because the main characters of the franchise were changed into something unrecognizeable, people that weren't the characters the fans of the franchise fell in love with. This is the situation with Spock and Chapel - and even Pike, in some points, as someone who's seen him in Discovery.
I won't argue too much about Chapel, because she didn't have as big of a presence in TOS. - I mean, I still think it was enough that she had a personality, and that personality is very different from SNW Chapel - but it's Picard's lore that he used to be a very different person in his youth. So alright, people change.
Spock, though? Do you really see snw spock and tos spock as the same person? Discovery's Spock had a lot of new lore added to his backstory, but personality-wise, he still was the same character. SNW's isn't consistent with either Disco or TOS Spock. The biggest change being just how much romance and sex his plotlines are involving now, in a way that not only tries to make the character appear overtly heterosexual, but also makes him out to be a jerk. His treatment of T'Pring, and later on of Chapel is terrible.
There's also episode inconsistencies. Spock and T'Pring didn't meet before Amok Time in TOS. The Gorn weren't as evil. This writing did ruin beloved characters and episodes for the older fans. I think the only way to not be even a bit bothered by it would be is SNW is your first star trek.
- the hijinks and dialogue quips
This is the last one, I promise. I was so happy to get a new trek show with independent episodes and tomfoolery back! This is what was missing in new-trek and they finally heard us! I was thrilled to have some silly campy star trek again. But then... they delivered it in the most forced way possible.
Am I just that hard to please? I was expecting to just... like it. It's harder to dislike something when you go into it already liking it. If I disliked the hijinks, maybe it means something went wrong.
It was forced, almost like the show was telling to my face "here's your funnies that you kept bothering us for. Aren't we funny? Look how funny we are". There were so many quips and one-liners that sometimes it interrupted the immersion, both in serious scenes and in the silly ones. There were line deliveries that were downright cringe. Remember when people were complaining Discovery (s1) should Star Trek, not game of thrones? Well... snw should be star trek, not marvel.
Aaand, we're done.
Yeah, I promise, I went into this show hyped beyond my ass. I did not get here with the intention of criticizing and hating everything - actually anything. It happened as I watched it. It was bad enough to change my opinion from something positive to something negative.
Some of the items in this list are personal opinions, some are opinions based on the mood of the fandom, and some were criticism of bigotry. I think it was important for me to share them with other fans. If you read this far, thank you! I'm honored you valued my opinion enough to hear it!

Do you recommend SNW? I’ve been trying to get into it because I like Gia Sandhu and enjoyed some episodes like The Elysian Kingdom. But I’m finding it hard to like what they did with Spock. I like Chapel as a character but Sp@pel isn’t my thing even though Gene Roddenberry wanted it to be canon. (Roddenberry apparently wanted Spock to be a Byronic character who circled between Uhura and Chapel before finally settling on the latter.)
Ok, I’m sorry, but first… people call it SPAPEL? This is the first time I’m seeing it lol took me a moment, anyway…
I’m probably not the best person to ask because I’m not watching Star Trek for… Star Trek? My favourite Star Trek is Discovery which is apparently not Star Trek at all to most people, so…
I think that overall SNW is a good series, but the focus on romance is, quite frankly, disappointing. (You can call me a hypocrite if you want, since I’m all into Kirk/La'an, but I still maintain that Kirk should not be in this show at all at this point - or only as an AU version of himself, since that’s fun - but since he is in it, well, I’m going to enjoy him - since I do like Wesley’s portrayal - and ship him with La'an.)
What is also disappointing is the focus on Spock. Again, I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t enjoy Spock’s journey in the first season, but I would prefer it if romance wasn’t the focus, and Spock was featured way less and other characters more. I have enjoyed Spock a bit less in s2, but I… enjoy Spock overall less even when I watch TOS; he’s just not my primary focus atm
I like La'an, I like M'Benga, I like Una, Uhura, Hemmer, Kirk, I enjoy Pelia, I like Pike when he doesn’t cook, so there is plenty to focus on for me (watching TV is about characters for me).
There are things I’m disappointed with (that are mainly: where are my strange new worlds? LOL), but I try not to dwell on them (except complaining every week about how Una was underutilized again lol), because they don’t really hold me back from enjoying what the writers are offering.
I don’t mind Spock/Chapel. I quite like them tbh; I’m interested in where it’ll go or rather how it gets there. (At this point, I’m most interested in “Is Chapel going to leave the Enterprise and the show at the end of the season?” because I feel that’s where it’s heading atm I don’t want it to happen, but I started to wonder because of Korby…)
I’m just very easy to please tbh and that’s why I don’t recommend things to people (I’m the kind of a person who will tell you that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the best TOS movie lol and it is my favourite~) I’m just lucky, so far, that SNW is matching my expectations and even validates some of my TOS readings and various headcanon. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want some things to be different, but I’m not the one writing the show.
I do like SNW, even though my reaction to episode 5 last week might suggest otherwise lol The comedy aspect just didn’t work for me… I’ll probably change my opinion after I rewatch it in a few months though.
also, I didn’t like The Elysian Kingdom when it aired, even though I cried at the end. I liked it more when I rewatched it in preparation for s2, but it still isn’t anywhere near my fave episodes. (I checked my rewatch ranking - based strictly on my enjoyment, not how good the episode is - and I put the episode as second to last, so… we might actually have different taste, so my opinion might be completely irrelevant to you…)

As a Spock and Uhura  fan, I am worried  about Strange New Worlds.
As a spock and uhura fan for more than 10 years, I can only hope for the best  in strange new worlds, although i have this bad feeling in my heart that strange new worlds will likely make Uhura gay and pair spock with chapel.I dont trust Alex Kurtzman since after Star Trek  Into Darkness, when he chose to downplay the spock and uhura relationship in that awful movie. He  instead dropped many spirk innuendos  that when you watched the movie, you wondered who spock was supposed to be in love with kirk or  uhura.
it made me angry as a spock and uhura fan,  no doubt alex kurtzman wrote star trek into darkness that way because he as he admits listens to fans and the spirk fans make the loudest noises between 2009 and 2013  and that factored in into the movie.   Thank goodness we got Star Trek Beyond that wiped out the trash that was Into Darkness and made Spock seem very much in love with Uhura again even if it was to the point of loving obsession However I fear he will continue this pattern in strange new worlds, especially now that we have a non binary actress playing uhura and they gave her an androgynous    look and it Kurtzman's  world, that he how he mostly writes and gives the appearances of lgbt characters, not to mention that in star trek now, they cast only lgbtq characters in lgbtq roles and Celia Rose Gooding  is lgbtq, so all the signs points to an lgbt Uhura in strange new worlds.
I also think some spock and uhura fans like lucyintheskywithdiamonds have become extremist kind of fans  and is now as  bad as some of the spirk fans, apparently if you love spock and uhura as I do, but express some concerns  and worry or even make heart breaking predictions about how the writers may try to downplay their relationship in SNW, luckyintheskywithdaimond thinks you are a hater, racist and a sexist and a fake spuura fans that needs to be ignored.
And that in itself is  sad since Spuhura is my OTP ship, anyone can go to my archive  to see it is fully dedicated to spuhura , how lucyintheskywithdaimonds calling me a fake fan and a racist  and sexist was down right offensive to me, when what I am doing is fighting for uhura's ferminity , the fact that she is a POC  and well worthy to be loved by a man like spock. so no, I don't want a gay Uhura,  but apparently to be a spuhura fan you must think like lucyintheskywithdaimonds wants you to think only or not express some concerns about how the writers may choose to write. Sorry I ain't   part of some borg collective.
Not to stay more on topic, I am worried  and scared of how SNW is going to turn out, so far soo good with Picard and Discovery, I have been disappointed with these shows because they flipped  things so much on established characters not in the best ways and I fear SNW will bring me more more disappointment  especially with Spock and Uhura, I just have the gut feeling they will be making Uhura gay like they did with 7 of 9 in Picard and we will get Spock and Chapel instead.
I pray this does not happen but a part of me is already preparing myself for this, but at the same time, this is why Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana will always be my Spock and Uhura, regardless of how the outcome of strange new worlds turns out.
