The Importance of Spare Parts
How important is it to keep certain spare parts available for your rifle or pistol? For this discussion, we’ll focus specifically on the AR platform, but these same thoughts can be applied to just about any firearm platform out there. I recently had an experience with one of my AR builds that truly hit home with the concept of which parts should I have on hand for a fighting platform such as the AR platform. I quickly had to re-assess my preparedness.

On a recent range session, I was having some malfunctions with one of my AR rifle builds and more specifically my BRN-180 SBR build in Flecktarn Aluma-Hyde II finish. About half of the time, the bolt would lock back as if the magazine was empty, but it wasn’t. One pull to the rear on the bolt handle, and it would strip the next round out the magazine and fire…well most of the time essentially turning this semi automatic firearm into a single shot rifle. Some times when stripping the next round out of the magazine, the round would hang up and not feed properly. This was very aggravating to say the least.

Upon further investigation, I noticed that it seemed I could over insert the magazine into the rifle. I removed the upper receiver just so I could visually inspect the travel of the magazine when inserted. What I found was that the magazine would fairly easily slide past the magazine catch, causing the bolt release to pop up. This would perfectly explain why the bolt was locking back even when a round was in the chamber.

So I do carry spare parts with me for my AR platforms, typically a spare bolt/gas rings and a really cool adjustable buffer from Odin works to fine tune the recoil system. I also carry an assortment of screwdrivers and other small tools from Multitasker. One of the things that I typically don’t carry much is any is spare parts for a lower receiver. I especially needed a spare bolt catch in this scenario, but I didn’t have one. A bolt catch is super quick to swap out too…range day was kinda ruined due to the lack of having one really inexpensive part that I could’ve swapped out and had my rifle back up and running.

After this experience I have decided to add a complete lower parts kit to my range bag for range days. Any quality lower parts kit will do, but I opted to go ahead and pick up a Geissele standard lower part kit from my friends over at Brownells. Geissele is well known for making quality mil-spec components for the AR platform. A quality lower parts kit from a company such as Geissele or Sons of Liberty Gunworks will inspire confidence in case a spare part is needed to get your AR rifle or pistol back up and running at the range. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend swapping out a takedown pin detent at the range however…we all know how easy it is to launch those detents into orbit.
