BnHA Chapter 299: No Chains Left

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “and then AFO broke out all of the inmates from six other prisons and took a nap. well anyways, here’s the hospital angst.” Kacchan woke up two days later and was all, “WAIT BUT HOW ARE DEKU AND TODOROKI AND ALL OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS EXCEPT IIDA DOING” and then we cut to Shouto’s room where the other U.A. kids were sitting around being Mutually Traumatized and giving each other moral support and such. Everyone was alll, “...”, and then the rest of the Todofam showed up, INCLUDING POSSIBLY REI?! which, omg. The chapter ended with Kacchan STOMPING THROUGH THE HALLS all “WHADDYA MEAN DEKU HASN’T WOKEN UP YET”, dragging along Satou and Mineta behind him, fueled by the power of ALL OF THE FUCKS HE NOW GIVES. He gives so many fucks now you guys. This boy cares so much he can probably deduct it on his taxes.

Today on BnHA: SPEAKING OF PEOPLE WHO GIVE A LOT OF FUCKS, the story cuts abruptly to Hawks, freshly recovering from his near-death experience, and pondering the threads that have weaved the tapestry of his life and led him to this moment. Basically he grew up in poverty with his Jerk Dad and Jerk Mom until his dad got arrested one day and his mom sent him off to go Find Money Or Something, and so he rescued a busload of people and found himself a new career. Back in the present day, Hawks and Jeanist ride around town in Jeanist’s Jamborghini having awkward encounters with civilians in a country on the brink of social collapse, and visiting Hawks’s mother’s home. Hawks is all “I know from an outsider’s perspective it must look like my life currently sucks, but now that the HPSC is gone, my public image is shot, and my parents are finally out of my life, I’m actually feeling SURPRISINGLY GOOD.” Anyway so he’s gonna go meet up with Endeavor now, and p.s. this chapter was fucking fantastic though, damn.

oh my god?? is this Hawks narration?? something about him growing up watching the heroes on TV and thinking of them as fictional characters

okay I scrolled down a little bit more to see the rest of that “Keigo” panel, and wow

this is basically a shed. poor boy definitely grew up rough. let me tell you guys, I came in here ready for some BakuDeku shenanigans; I was not prepared for Hawks Flashback Angst. I AM HERE FOR IT, but also wow I gotta brace myself now lol

BnHA sure does have an array of Jerk Dads, doesn’t it. makes me appreciate characters like Masaru and JirouDad all the more for bucking the trend

anyway. so Horikoshi, you really thought that one itty bitty chapter of hospital catharsis would be enough to calm us all before you went right back to showing us child abuse huh. my god man can we rest

swear to god this kid can’t be more than five or six, and yet he has this completely blank look on his face even with his dad looming over him being all threatening and shit. like he’s shut down his emotions to protect himself. imagine what has to happen to a child for him to have learned this at such a young age. fuck

don’t mingle with humans?? not “other” humans, just humans?? what is this implying here?? and also holy shit Hawks definitely didn’t inherit his looks from his dad orz

then again he doesn’t really bear much of a resemblance to his strung-out mom here either

omg omg omg. and this child is basically trapped here in this environment with these two people. this explains a SHITLOAD about Hawks’s personality though you guys. his ability to completely separate his real thoughts from the face he presents to the outside world. his pragmatic approach to analyzing and solving problems. his layers of emotional walls. turns out almost none of that came from the HPSC training -- that was all learned hands-on in his own personal do-or-die survival nightmare childhood!! oh, boy

and small wonder then that he latched on to Endeavor so strongly if he really is the one who brought down his dad and inadvertently saved him from this. also, just putting this out there, I know people are always talking about him and Dabi being foils, and I think it’s very interesting how Touya grew up in a household where he saw firsthand the dark side of hero society, and so ended up becoming a villain in order to bring it down. whereas young Keigo had almost the exact opposite experience, growing up experiencing the dark side of villain society and becoming a hero in order to bring about a world where no one else has to experience that. just. both of them are so determined not to become their fathers. some interesting parallels there

so Hawks was sort of an accident after his parents had “thanks for helping me not get caught after I killed that guy” sex, and now this little boy is growing up in squalor and being beaten by his father for things like Sitting In The Wrong Out-Of-The-Way Corner Trying Not To Be A Bother To Anybody. holy fuck. this is so rough to read through you guys

wait so does Jerk Dad have a an eyeball manipulation quirk?? because he doesn’t have the wings like his son, but wth are these things??

this presumably also means that Keigo has never been to school or anything either. he basically doesn’t exist. he thinks heroes are fictional characters, he doesn’t realize that they’re real people. these are people who could help him if he could escape and find them, but he doesn’t know, and they don’t know about him

How strictly do you follow canon? —I try my best! I am still not really caught up on bleach. I stopped reading/watching after the Winter War, so I’m literally winging it with any other developments and posts. I am living my life with spoilers~!

SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals. — Hiyori has a very pure mind. Pure in the sense that she’s as straight as an arrow. What you see is what you get. She speaks/blurts out everything she feels. And if she doesn’t say it, you can still see it. Every emotion is written straight on her face. She could never really make a good liar and to that end-- if she is your friend, you know she’s really your friend. She’s the type that’ll treat your life as more valuable than her own. She’ll do everything in her power to protect you. Even if you are losing your mind or your sense of self, she will never stop being your friend. Loyal and comically tsundere at times, it’s almost like whiplash keeping up with her topsy-turvy emotions. But if you can, you will definitely be rewarded with someone strong, fearless and unflinchingly loyal at your side. Someone who will fight all your battles for you, no matter how impossible the odds appear.

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?). — I think most people agree that she is very violent. She hits people and her friends that do not actually deserve it. She never uses proportional force and it’s obvious that she has a multitude of issues that she has but never bothers to fix. She’s reliant on her friends to make her appear better than she is, because on her own, she would just be a violent goblin. But with her friends, she’s actually Hiyori. So in a sense, Hiyori has no actual sense of self without other people’s loyalty to her.

In addition, she’s not at all traditionally attractive like a normal bleach female. She’s mean and ugly and angry and easily triggered and most of the fandom think it was a cop-out to have her survive her bifurcation.

What inspired you to rp your muse? — Uhm... I always wanted to rp one of the visored. I loved their story the most- outcasts among the shinigami, hollow and humans. They were outsiders and their story feels the saddest to me. They are victims of a crime and yet, they do not behave like typical victims. They are all so vibrant (sorta!) and I love that about them. I also wanted to pick up a character that was uhh... violent? XD I have never written someone who was the complete opposite of me. I suppose it was to challenge myself. To rp someone who is always controversial and yet, still retain interactions.

What keeps your inspiration going? — I’ve really grown to adore Hiyori over the past year of rping her. I’ve always loved shiyori and have also managed to develop an amazing ship with @hirako5hinji and I love all their threads. I keep having so many new ideas and AUs for these two that I wish there were more hours in the day! I also love to develop different friendships with Hiyori. Her interactions with people that are shinigami, human and hollow- and how she perceives them in her mind with her blatant prejudice verses her actual nature of wanting connections... it’s such a good balancing act. ;u;

Do you think you give your character justice? YES / NO ( I wish I was caught up on bleach!).

Do you sometimes write drabbles? YES / NO. (Very rarely, but if I happen to think of a little scene or my writing muse is strong, I’ll do one. But I prefer interactions!)

Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO. (Lmao, all day everyday I watch shows or outfits or have food and I’m always wondering what Hiyori might think of this XD.)

Are you confident in your portrayal? YES / NO. (I’m still considered a bit new to the bleach fandom. Everyone has their worries!)

I’m too old to worry about other people not liking my portrayal, but if they have something that they have an issue with or think I’m doing something totally wrong because I missed something in the manga- then I will accept it and incorporate it. =u= / I’m just winging it really and having fun!

Do you like questions, which help you explore your character? — Oh wow! I love those questions. It always makes me think and explore more cracks and crevices about my character and her feelings regarding such issues. I also love questions that eventually lead to a new headcanon for my character too! c:

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why? — Yeah, I love talking about Hiyori. Even if you’re disagreeing with me, I’ll love to hear it! TALK TO ME ;u;

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it? — Uhm... not sure? I think if they don’t like it then I hope they can unfollow me! I don’t want them to think this is wildly ooc and ruining the characterisation of Hiyori for them. ; - ; I would feel a little bad, but not bad enough to change my portrayal completely. Everyone has their own interpretation of a character and not everyone will have the same views or thoughts on it.

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it? — Most people don’t really like Hiyori anyway so I’m chill as long as I got interactions. xD

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors? — Yes. Lol, I rush when writing and uhm, I’m the type that rarely edits my work until AFTER I post it. Both mun and muse are reckless and charge in blind then realise the damage after the thing has been done. orz

Do you think you are easy going as a mun? — Yeah. I have no energy to develop any conflicts with anyone lmao! I just love to rp and I actually enjoy reading nearly everyone’s threads. I wish I had the time to go through the entire dash and read every interaction, but now I limit my reading of the dash to when I’m online or if I love a thread and follow the replies. : > I love rping and I hope you guys have as much fun as me!!

I'm so glad Kirishima is getting so much spotlight, he really deserves it!!!! And it looks like hes gonna get more, since hes in the main group along with Deku, Uraraka and Tsuyu. I;m so hyped!!!

Honestly!!!!!!!!!!! That’s one interesting group tbh, Kirishima and Tsuyu’s interactions are always incredibly adorable to watch and seeing Kirishima interact for so long with pure and good people is gonna be hard on my heart (I mean, you know I’m 100% a bakusquad fan but they’re all at least in part assholes and Kiri fits with them just right, he can be just like Sero and Kaminari and I love it, but then his interactions with Amajiki have been so pure can you imagine an arc filled with that I’m already crying)

I just hope my other faves won’t completely disappear through this arc haha sigh

And I dunno, as things are now my opinion on a possible ship might change soon enough because it looks like their interactions amount is about to skyrocket, so anything I say right now is just a temporary answer? But generally I find their friendship incredibly adorable, though as of now I don’t think I can see anything romantic between the two... mostly because even though I’ve seen them being friendly and supportive of each other I don’t think I’ve ever seen them actually connect over anything that wasn’t Bakugou?? Being friendly and supportive is just how they both are with everyone, before I can say I ship them I’m gonna need something more singular to their relationship

..........I would lie if I said I didn’t think about this while drawing that kiss R I P my multishipper heart is gonna kill me BUT IT’S OKAY I’m not one for unhappy endings so consider this - Denki sees them kiss, since he’s best bro and both Kirishima and Bakugou tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves he already knew this was gonna happen so he’s like, sad but resigned it hurts and he wishes he didn’t have to see it but he loves them both so much that he can’t help but being happy for how happy they are at the same time too (sure, being part of that happiness would be a dream coming true, but he’s used to never coming first he can deal with this hahahahaha r i p)

Meanwhile a bit after the kiss once Kiri is a hundred per cent sure Bakugou isn’t going to explode his head off if he mentions his very huge crush on Kaminari he does and Bakugou’s like, shit, it’s not like he’d mind it because Kaminari is, well, he’s Kaminari and Bakugou isn’t sure why but he’s comfortable to be around and easy to talk to and he’s stupidly pretty and like, yeah, okay, he might be into him too, maybe, he isn’t admitting anything here (not like he needs to, as stated already he’s pretty easy to read), but Kaminari’s also the no homo type of het so it’s not like they can do much about this threeway crush or whatever, and Kirishima’s like sure, I know, I just wanted to be open about this to avoid trouble, which is very sensible and will cut us on a lot of miscommunication angst this is getting out of hand let’s skip ahead I always forget how much fun I have writing this kind of bullshit

For however much Kaminari swore he could deal with it and how much he’s actually managing to deal with it he’s also the same brand of open book Baku and Kiri are and while it was easy to act like friends with no romantic feelings when everyone was doing the same, trying to hide from Bakugou and Kirishima while they’re openly in a relationship turns out to be more or less impossible, mostly because he can’t seem to avoid the longing stares and sad smiles and the I have to go I just remembered I have a thing to do bye’s when it becomes too much, and Kirishima might not be the brightest but he’s perfectly in tune with everyone’s feelings and Bakugou might stomp on people’s feelings more often than not but he is the brightest which means they notice and they’re like god fucking damn it - Bakugou in nature isn’t one to talk about problems until they burst out in fits of anger, but thank god he’s got Kirishima right there and they might not be 100% sure they got the reason for Kaminari’s weirdness right but they’re exasperated and they at least want their friend to stop being weird and avoiding them, they miss him (and Kaminari seriously misses them too he feels so stupid for how big of a deal he’s turning this into) SO they corner him and talk it out cause I’m a slut for open and honest communication and Kaminari straight out starts crying from happiness and relief before they’re even done talking and Kirishima starts crying right after him because sympathetic crier supreme and Bakugou’s like you know what I changed my mind fuck both of you emotional disasters I’m out
