BTHB 2023 - Fill 17 - Water Torture
Sometimes I just want to explore traumas that I figure out a character has, and sometimes I also want to explore the idea of "god, you know, yeah, I think that would make Mariano Act Like That as an adult"
TWs: Torture, water torture, near-drowning, whump of a minor, institutional abuse, child abuse
Shuddering, gasping coughing filled the room. Unforgiving fingers tangled in the trainee mage's dark hair, the only thing keeping the trembling boy from collapsing back into the pool. Diego waited.
The dark eyes of the instructor and his trainee met. The instructor nodded. Diego dropped the mage back under, mid-gasp. At this point, it took more strength to grant the boy air than it did to restrict it.
The mage's arms flailed, still struggling to try to push himself closer to air. The instructor wrote something down, his face still unreadable to Diego even so far into his training. He had no idea if this one was doing well, or failing. Sometimes it seemed like the criteria changed--were teenagers even really capable of passing all the tests otherwise? Some instructors had to be giving them slack.
Just as the mage's struggling began to slow and his back began to hitch, the instructor nodded. Diego brought him back up. Was his face red from the oxygen deprivation? Was it from stress? Was that water from the pool running down his face, or tears?
Diego didn't know why his chest felt tight at that thought. If these kids were almost old enough to destroy towns and spearhead invasions, they were old enough to understand the consequences of getting captured by an enemy. They were old enough to learn what enemies would do to get information. He supposed that they were old enough to learn what happened if you couldn't keep yourself safe.
Half an hour really wasn't very long at all, to the torturer of an enemy kingdom.
Down, hold, then back up. Down, hold, then back up. Diego repeated this until his shoulder began to ache. His instructor kept his gaze locked on him. He could feel him searching for any crack in his expression. Any ounce of pity, or remorse. Or guilt.
Diego made sure that there wouldn't be any.
His own son was the same age as this mage. Down, hold, up. He supposed it was just lucky that he'd been born without magic. Down, hold, up.
The little mage's struggling got weaker and weaker with every repetition. The minutes continued to tick by. Frantic coughing and gasping turned to desperate, deep breaths turned to smooth, silent breathing. The boy figured out how to subtly hold his breath, how to conceal his instinctive reactions. He stopped fighting. He began to focus on enduring.
The instructor checked his pocket watch. He wrote something else down. Down, hold, up. The boy's glasses had long since fallen off into the water. There was no attempt to grab them.
Finally, when the boy's eyes stopped even trying to flutter open, his breathing calm and even when he was pulled from the pool, the instructor capped his pen. He motioned his head towards the door.
His instructor's eyes never left his as Diego let the boy fall backwards to the unforgiving stone floor, finally releasing his grip. He did not wince at the sound of the boy's head hitting the floor. Turning, the instructor began to lead the way out. Diego risked a glance backwards as he left. Half-lidded eyes stared after him, slowly blinking.
Diego knew. The boy knew. They'd both learned the lessons that the instructor wanted to teach.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately is that small moment in “Air Turtle” where immediately after the Daves lose yet another game, Leo says how sorry he is and how he’s doing his best as the mascot. This moment is so short but it’s honestly jam-packed with a whole heap of characterization.
His need to apologize for things clearly not his fault - especially when it feels like he messes up the job he was given despite doing the best he can (the phrase “it’s not about you” takes a new meaning when this is one of the lessons to be learned from that - that he is not always solely responsible for things going wrong), his need to save face and make a connection with an older adult man in his life (something he consistently does throughout the series - he’s got a few daddy issues, always collecting potential father figures, it’s no wonder he jumps at the bit to keep rapport), and the way he sounds and looks and the words he chooses really pushes how he is just a kid (“Mr. the Dunk, I’m so sorry”).
Like I know it’s a one off moment that doesn’t truly mean much, but when put against the rest of the series it works really well with the rest of Leo’s established character and helps in solidifying later concepts as well.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt leo#rise leo#rottmnt headcanons#am I looking too much into things? almost assuredly yes#I actually appreciate how tim immediately goes ‘it’s not your fault’ as well? like he could’ve just blamed this 15/16 year old but he didn’t#but yeah this moment got to me a little mainly because it made me realize that Leo…DOES take responsibility for things a lot#he messes up a ton yeah but he says sorry at a pretty consistent rate#and y’know thinking about it#THIS IS TINFOIL HAT TERRITORY BE WARNED#he’s mentioned being betrayed by his brothers before - I wonder if it was something as simple as taking the fall for like#breaking something of Splinters or whatever#point is it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for him to get the full blame for something only partially his fault#or not his fault at all in some cases#like in bug busters where Raph gets mad at Leo for not getting captured with them#(I understand Raph’s mindset here a ton - Raph’s the leader and he’s likely lashing out so I don’t blame the poor kid)#but this plus the moment at the beginning of the movie#where only Leo is reprimanded despite Mikey and Donnie having full autonomy to join the fun pizza stacking#make no mistake this is not at all a diss on everyone else!!! it’s just something I noticed#I think that “it’s not about you” doesn’t just pertain to being arrogant and wanting the spotlight#I think it’s also about how responsibility is meant to be shared#and like#Leo DOES mess up a lot! so he’s honestly probably used to having the blame because it is often at least somewhat warranted#he’s specifically described as being good at apologizing after all#tldr: Leo messes up a lot of the time so he is very used to blame and attention both good and bad#even when the full blame should not be solely on his shoulders

HoO is so funny to me when you actually think about the ages of all the characters. Octavian is 18. Percy and Annabeth are 16, almost 17. Reyna is presumably 16. Frank just turned 16, Jason’s about to turn 16. Leo and Piper are like 15. Hazel’s like 14 and a half, and Nico is 13.
The Death Sibs are both the youngest and oldest on the Argo II. Octavian is a college freshman getting into petty drama with a bunch of high schoolers. He gets told to shut up at one point by a random 8th grader. Everyone is scared of the 8th grader. We Sent A 13 Year Old To Superhell and he came back weirder, Just Like Middle School. TLH was just three high school sophomores being sent to do a task and it going Exactly Like You’d Expect. Percy’s the only demigod on the ship who can legally drive (though Reyna gets her drivers license at some point before TOA). What Is Happening.

Edward Elric actually perfectly average size (164 cm / 5.3 ft) for a fifteen year old child in 1914.
It's just that he's usually compared to his brother, Alphonse Elric, who appears way over 6 ft tall at the age of 14.
Alphonse is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Maybe I'll make a post on this at some point but like, something deeply fucked up about TNP and Po3 that people have totally forgotten about is how badly they try to whine that "Tigerstar Had Good Traits :("
Firestar does it, Brambleclaw does it, and they keep doing this after it becomes this GRAND irony that Firestar almost gets Tiger'd to death in a fox trap because he was too trusting. Bramble gets his pity award of keeping deputyship and then cries to his son about how No One Saw The Good In Tigerstar :(
And it's wiiiiild that no one else in this fandom has done anything with the fact that Leopardstar broke the Warrior Code to appoint Hawkfrost, who had no apprentice, an extremely aggressive and warmongering Tigerclone who says things like "Tigerstar wasn't the worst cat to look up to." ONLY qualifying trait was being kinda like Tigerstar.
And she practically did that the SECOND Mistyfoot went missing. And then Leopardstar continued to be one of the most violent and xenophobic leaders through Po3, joining with WindClan to attack ThunderClan.
What I'm getting at is that like, a few years ago, with books like "Blackfoot's Reckoning" and "Shadow in RiverClan" it's like they suddenly decided to retcon in a bunch of "redemption arcs" in hindsight. They just pretended like there was this grand high reckoning with TigerClan, when there literally wasn't, and if anything that caused SERIOUS problems for the cast that the authors didn't fully acknowledge as such.
And now ppl haven't actually read the main series and are just working with their recent memory of all these retcon books.
But TNP and PO3 are still there, and you can go and see the ACTUAL timeline where Leopardstar is really not apologetic at all, and Blackstar is a useful stooge for the very next wannabe dictator that strolls in, in spite of the new side content that COMPLETELY mischaracterized them for their plots to work.
#I just wish people could be more critical of this#And im not entirely anti-retcon. Mind you#But I am here because i think these retcons make them WORSE characters. It's BAD for a character to GET a book with a redemption arc and--#Then they don't change at all and act like totally different people later in the timeline#And Leopardstar is the worse one between her and Blackstar BECAUSE she has sooo many active choices here#Im confident in my choice for BB the more I think about it. Leopardstar's dismantling of the bonehill was good#But it works better as a tragedy imo with the rest of the series in mind#That for a brief moment. A fleeting whim. She could have changed.#But she never did.#And Blackstar who was FAR less repentant at the time DID eventually turn around.#At the end of the day one of them appointed Hawkfrost as codebreaking deputy.#And the other did not.#And I think it's fucking bullshit the way that Leopardstar's retcondemption implies that Hawkfrost was just so tricky he mislead her#The old and experienced leader who had been fooled by a tiger before and was soso sorry for it. Just got tricked.#Like fuck off. She never had a redemption.
