Reasons I Love SequinSmile-x, For Her Birthday
I occasionally can write a lil fic, but only when inspiration hits at exactly the right moment. So I have no gift fic for my bestie @sequinsmile-x. Instead, I offer a list of reasons I love her with my whole heart including several of my favourite fics of hers. (below the cut, because I got a lil carried away in her honour)
When Tomorrow Begins, the tragic and beautiful EPIC SAGA of one incredible AU with impeccable flashbacks. Vic had just posted chapter eight of the sequel, If Tomorrow Starts Without Me, when I discovered this series I think two years ago. It remains a favourite that I am always thinking about all the time, especially since its gutwrenching, tearjerking, perfect conclusion last year, and I have reread it at least twice.
Martha, the most perfect beautiful angel of a cat. I do not have a cat, but I have a collection of my friends’ cats that I consider my babies and I will one day meet Martha in person and officially give her all the pets she absolutely deserves.
Tequila Confessions, which I guess I accidentally gave some ideas for and then she kindly gifted it to me (the first of many, including two of three follow-ups to TC!). This fic never fails to make me laugh and cry from laughing and I cherish it for starting a long tradition of me being a doofus and Vic running with my doofusness to create magic. (Again, I apologize for Invasion. I was runnin’ my mouth, that’s on me.)
A shared love of Tim Hortons, despite us being located in different continents. I have had many text conversations with her while walking home from therapy with an iced cap or a french vanilla in my hands and Midnights playing in my ears. A truly comforting friend even though there are many thousands of miles between us. Also because she’s British she uses the beautiful U in favourite and colour and honour and it makes me SO HAPPY. (this entry is about Canada-UK relations lol)
Love You In The Dark, another iNcReDiBLe AU fic where our intrepid heroes find each other in 1963. I know she worked so hard to get the setting right, and it can be a challenge to nail the voice and actions of characters in an era so unlike their own, but she friggin’ nailed it with this one. And it was also completely terrorizing when chapters ended on horrific cliffhangers you absolute freak. Also the way she incorporates canon details in AU fics makes me weep every time!! AND when she makes little easter egg connections to her previous fics, omg. I love puzzles and consider myself to be the human embodiment of Nancy Drew, so these kind of connections and secrets thrill me to no end.
HAVE YOU SEEN HOW CREATIVE THIS GAL IS??????? Friggin. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve screamed at her for sending a header she’s designed for an upcoming fic. And the fake insta posts???? Like wtf. The way she captures their voices in FAKE SOCIAL MEDIA. Stop being so good at everything (please don’t stop you are my lifeblood).
The Way Home, which actually I can’t even speak about because I’m still upset about the last chapter, you evil little pillbug.
She is so fun and so funny and so kind and so giving to this little fandom! We have a rich collection of hotchniss reads thanks to an incredible amount of talented writers, but sorry this post is about Vic and she posts new chapters and one shots multiple times a week, totalling well over a million words on ao3, despite having like a job and friends and a life outside of the internet. I am in awe, always.
okay sorry i’ll stop embarrassing you. love you vic and happy birthday!!!!!!

OST rambling time. You know how it is on this blog sometimes.
Gotta blindside you all today though and not make it about either the HoT or EoD soundtrack but about that one soundtrack that has been OBSESSING me since its game's release in 2014, and that is Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
This seems to be a general strength of the series (at least the games composed by David Wise) and not necessarily exclusive to DKCTF but the atmosphere of the music is out of this world.
You're playing this game about an ape collecting bananas to defeat a bunch of penguin vikings and the music does have this general upbeat bouncy vibe you'd expect from a colourful platformer but almost every single track has this gutwrenching melancholy touch to it. Sometimes more of a melancholy punch in the face tbh. That mixture is something I've barely ever encountered in any other game soundtrack, at least not executed with such perfection.
There's I think about 100 songs in the soundtrack and not a single one is bad either. I honestly don't know what else to say other than please listen to this soundtrack. In its entirety. It works perfectly as study/work background music as well. Or even better if you are able to, just play the game in general because aside from its great soundtrack it's probably also the platformer with the best level design I've ever seen. Also did I mention the game has dynamic music with variations depending on level progression... T_T
Here's a humble selection of songs to get you started, but please know that there are so many more:
Some fan favourites: Seashore War - The fan favourite. Wing Ding - Personally I love the Zipline version of that song. Amiss Abyss - That one's a tearjerker. When it hits that part. Busted Bayou - A bop.
Some of my favs: Mangrove Cove (Underwater) - My personal favourite. Don't have any words to describe the part starting at 2:09. Might just be my favourite VG song of all time idk I cried when this came on ingame and I'm not proud of it fjnek Fruity Factory - Atmospheeere. Scorch 'n' Torch - That electronic processed brass (whatever instrument?) drop between 0:58-1:00. Irate Eight (Underwater) - I think that's one of the first songs that caught my attention back then. Still one of my favs in the OST. Frozen Frenzy - My favourite level.

Spirit phone gang + whiteboard fox!
before we start, special mention to Samena as it was her birthday yesterday! Happy birthday Samena Leeching!
KAY SO the server has gotten its 3rd whiteboard, and it's ALREADY OFF TO A BANGING START<33 it's mostly Kolby x Arabella, Spirit phone gang, more Kolby and ofc, Pin and Ted mucking about being idiots. Mentally well Ted is now a thing and will continue to plauge us into the future.

Unfortunately, i did accidentally crop out but news: Kolby can float! Does this mean he can fly??? That's just a theory, a game theory.
Another theory (which isn't really a theory but more rather something I really wanna point out), but the spirit phone gang, while they haven't gotten the MOST showtime together are clearly a found-family dynamic which is only the most heartwarming, gutwrenching and tearjerking thing I've EVER discovered. PLEASE, I AM SUCH A SUCKER FOR FOUND FAMILY DYNAMICS<//3
So, obv you have Morphine. The mother-dad. The uptight, clean and fussy one. Then, Morphine's perfect contrast, the violent and silly Captain Pickles! The adventurous and energetic dad to keep up with their just as energetic son. Have I mentioned that Morphine x Pickles is such a cute ship? I ship it. I do. They're literally enemies to lovers. I don't know if you've noticed, but IVE noticed how they talk to eachother whenever they agree on something. It's SO cute and refreshing... though, obviously I'm still a bit fan of their back and forth banter.
Where was I? Oh yeah, moving on- professor Fibblestew, their old grandad. I just love elderly characters. Then we have the main couple themselves: Kolby and Arabella. I'LL KEEP IT SHORT AS IVE ALREADY POSTED ABOUT THEIR SHIP but basically they're childhood sweethearts+boss x underling+soul mates. Don't believe me?
Tumblr media
FEAST YOUR EYES. even if Arabella was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, KOLBY WOULD STILL LOVE HER!!! THEY ARE PERFECT IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY!! UGH MY HEART I CANT TAKE THIS.
Oh yeah, Kolby = hyper son
Arabella = angsty goth gf
now, honourable mention to their.. strange uncle of the family dynamic... Henry!! Yay? ....yeah, no. Haha. No. We don't talk about him. Who we DO talk about is Pip however! We haven't seen much of Pip but what we do know is that they are a demon in the form of a young girl, comprised of a flock of crows- assuming Pip gets a warm welcome from the family: I can't WAIT to see what this new addition has in store!!

It's not a show recommendation per se, but I wonder what are the darkest/saddest TV episodes you've ever watched? I'm in the mood of something gutwrenching or a tearjerker, I guess.
This is an interesting question! There are lots of episodes that have made me cry buckets, but usually it’s because they hit a nerve. It’s a very personal thing, so I’m not sure those episodes would be dark to you. I cry very easily watching shows but it’s rarely because I think they are very dark or sad.
From the Buffyverse, I think Reprise is genuinely dark, and even uncomfortable, to watch. Hero made me cry a lot when I first watched it but I don’t think it’s very dark or sad in general. It’s just that, at the time, Doyle’s final words (“Is that it? Am I done?”) kept playing on my mind, because I felt like I was done. Knowing the actor was dead in real life made the death of his character that much worse. Home is also really sad to me because Angel kills Connor, and Not Fade Away is a bit sad because of Wesley’s death - I always sob during Wesley’s death, but in the end I smile because I love the ending.
Overall, the darkest episode of Angel is probably Reprise. The existentalist conversation between Angel and Holland Manners, plus Angel and Darla’s sex scene, do make the episode one of the darkest I’ve ever scene. From BtVS, The Body is really sad because it portrays death very realistically and doesn’t give the audience a break. I Will Remember You is very sad if you’re a Bangel fan watching it for the first time, but it hasn’t made me sad in a long time.
I again have to consult my list of shows I’ve watched. It’s hard to remember the darkest episodes I’ve seen. Like I said, the darkest/saddest episodes, to me, are the ones that trigger me (usually because of my family). I don’t expect you to feel the same way. I have a high tolerance for darkness. A lot of the time, shows that try to be dark, and shock the audience and make us cry, bore me and annoy me because I don’t like being played. TV is rarely genuinely dark, and things stop being sad after a while. Regardless, sad and/or dark episodes (spoilers!):
The last episode of Fringe was heartbreaking because Walter, the mad yet lovable scientist, got trapped in the future, and erased from the past/ present, in order to save his son (and his family/friends). Knowing that Walter gave up everything and lived alone in a strange timeline, and that his son doesn’t even know he made that sacrifice? What a sad ending.
Lucifer’s season 4 episode “Super Bad Boyfriend” is a mix of comedy and heartbreak. A lot of it is funny but the “black lives matter” storyline is rough to watch, especially since it ends with a black teenage boy dying. I hate it when kids die. It’s the saddest thing to me.
The Fall has a lot of dark episodes since the show follows a serial killer.
The last episodes of season 4 of Orange is the New Black get pretty dark, especially with Poussey’s death and the horrible mistreatment of Red and other women.
The Banshee episodes where Siobhan and Rebecca die are pretty dark, because the characters were important to the show and their deaths were violent and cruel.
I know there are many more episodes but I can’t remember them!
Thanks for the ask!
