The Good, The Bad, and the WTF for WWE Raw 3/11/19

Fastlane was pretty good. We’re a month from Wrestlemania and it would be great if the red brand followed up a strong PPV with a solid show that advances storylines. Did that happen? Let’s find out together with The Good, The Bad, and the WTF: Guardians of the Independent Circuit Edition.

The Good: Drew McIntyre is back. Not that he was gone, but he might as well have been as he was forced to carry Black Chris Masters and Baron Corbin in an inexplicable stable of mediocrity for months of repetitive booking since his split from Ziggler. Not only was the Scottish Psychopath’s attack on Reigns vicious and awesome, he proceeded to give Ambrose even more of the business to close the show. I’ll concede that he overuses the Claymore kick and it really reduces its impact as a finisher, but his brutality and lack of remorse is obvious with his opponents and making The Shield his Marks was great storytelling after their banner night at Fastlane. Much as I’m not a fan of Reigns and his in ring work, this match should be fun at ‘Mania if that’s the plan.

Triple H and Batista square off. This really could have been slightly better. It felt like they just screamed “Give me what I want” and “I’m not giving you what you want, be a man” at each other for about 15 minutes. That said, keeping them apart physically is the absolute right call and Hunter was great on the mic as always. Is there even such a thing as a nose ring model? Guess it doesn’t matter. He should have tried to beat up the Guardians of the Independent Circuit but I’ll take this. I’m excited for this match. Solid point from John Brooks last night though. Why make it No Holds Barred? Were we really expecting any actual holds from these two guys? This is gonna be a slobber knocker.

ArmBar City continues to have zero kayfabe f**ks to give. Her delivery is still shaky but it’s significantly better as a heel who just hates everything and wants to hurt people. Speaking of people, Dana Brooke is still a thing apparently and that’s fun. Dana clearly hard at work in the gym as she has slimmed down considerably and she delivered a heartfelt plea that felt a little too real but I suppose that’s ok. I continue to stand by the fact that she was a solid heel in NXT and provided the proper opportunity, could be an asset to Raw. But that’s not up to me. Sadly, after her plea, Ronda obliged with a 30 second beatdown and a walk off. This Ronda is far more entertaining than the smiling babyface we got for a year.

Angle gets a nice sub-finale match in front of his home crowd. Apollo gets some TV time despite having to job to an old wrinkled Angle Slam. I was thinking Kurt/McIntyre for a retirement match at Mania but I guess that’s not the plan. At this stage I have no clue who it would be. I just hope it’s not Jason Jordan. Ha! You forgot he was a thing didn’t you?

Rollins and Heyman banter back and forth, The Portal of Misfits opens, and out pops Shelton Benjamin. The banter was great as to be expected for hyping the upcoming Universal Title match and who hates a trip to Shelton Benjamin’s Suplex Village? Not me. Shelton and Seth put on a predictably solid match that ended with a stomp and the roll for the challenger continues. As weirdly unexpected as this was, I dig it.

The Bad: BlackOChet vs Power and Glorious. Nothing wrong with the match but I fear we’ve fallen into a familiar trap here. There’s only three tag teams featured on the show so they’re in a constant cycle of fighting each other. It’s starting to get bland. The Revival blindsiding Black and Ricochet on the stage after the match is fun. Top Guys. Out.

Braun Strowman’s continued vendetta against the motor vehicle industry. I’ll admit watching him tear apart a kit car like a kid opening a Christmas present makes me laugh but Braun’s feud for Mania is with the Weekend Update guys? Ugh.

Alexa Bliss to host Wrestlemania. Isn’t she physically cleared to compete? It’s not like she won’t be entertaining as the host, but can we please get Bliss back in the ring where she belongs? We need the Goddess.

The WTF: Elias punks No Way Jose and the Rosebuds after a conga line interruption. I love Elias but is this going anywhere or is he just going to run down every city’s sports teams, squash a jobber, and walk off?

The end of the Finn Balor IC Championship run. So he doesn’t defend the belt at Fastlane, loses it just a month after winning it to the same dude, and now he’s back to probably fighting Rezar in the bathroom break match and smiling backstage while everybody talks about his abs? There is zero reason to put the strap back on Lashley here. If they wanted him as a long term champion they should have never given the belt to Balor in the first place. All I can come up with here is a setup for the return of the Demon King at Wrestlemania and that just means the belt changes hands again because The Demon never loses. Just awful.

Nia/Tamina/Natalya/Glamazon/Banks/Bayley ride of nonsense. For as great as I thought a women’s tag championship would be, holy crap have they booked it poorly. There is way too much Tamina on tv lately. What is all this even leading to? A triple threat tag title match which includes a retired Beth Phoenix? Why? She has nothing left to prove. What happened to defending the titles across all brands? How about Bayley/Banks against Toni Storm and Rhea Ripley? Who the hell wouldn’t want to see that? What about the IIconics? Yes they’re annoying but at least they’re a team. Do something interesting. The Samoan SnoozeAlarm and the Buddy pairing of Nattie and Phoenix doesn’t count.

All in all a pretty unbalanced show for about two hours that really picked up in the final hour with McIntyre delivering beatdowns and the HHH/Batista confrontation. 3 Hogan Belt Whips.
