ok i know absolutely nothing about baseball (i’m the same anon that asked about baseball a few days ago) so why is the phillies being in the world series such a HUGE deal?
okay so we won the wildcard slot in the playoffs this year which in layman’s terms means our attendance in the post season was already on shaky ground and almost shocking because we were honestly shit this year in the philly way (constantly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, giving us all ulcers) and only won 87 games in the regular season (compare to the astros 108 wins) and all of the stats said that we would be eviscerated in the first round of the playoffs and we were like “that’s fine we’re just happy to be here :)” because we truly have had such a miserable year that it was nice to just be included for once but instead we beat the cardinals and then we beat the braves (the team with the best record) and then we beat the padres and none of the series were really that close. and now we’re not “just happy to be here.” now we’re fucking hungry. it’s been 14 long years since we last won a world series and we’re absolutely starving. and it’s so clear that the other teams and the national announcers and commentators cannot believe our scrappy mutt of a rabid rescue team dares to be here but here we are. in the world series. after 13 years since our last appearance and 11 years since we were just in contention for a league pennant. and we won the first game of the series tonight. in houston. in extra innings. after coming back from an ulcer-inducing 5 run deficit. go phils.

I have never been a big sports guy, and never will be, but I always did enjoy going to a baseball or soccer game, watching world-class soccer on tv, and watching some of the olympics. To that we can now add hockey, which I am enjoying for the most part. 'For the most part' because I am contractually obligated to be a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and they sure do like to flub it when it counts. But I'm mentally prepared for that; I'm an LA Dodgers fan.

Oh to have a transcript of today’s final class roleplay session. So much happened. There was shouting. There were three assassination attempts. There was heartbreak. The class finally put their hearts into their roles.

You're real neat, you know?
A really neat thing that happened in a draft yesterday was I was playing a UB control deck against a WU control deck, and we were deep in the late game, I had a flier and was whittling away at their life total, they had a creature that gets infinite +1/+1 counters and were whittling away at my board, and then one turn, I realize something: I have exact lethal. Thanks to my menace creature, I have exactly enough damage to kill them no matter how they block! So I swing with everything.
And they activate this
Tumblr media
It had been on their board. Sitting there. For the past like 5 turns. I had completely forgotten about it.
I lost the game next turn.

I didn't say 'possession'. What I meant was...a goal. An ideal. Someone to strive being good enough for. Come on Kit, don't you think you're worth the best?

Now back, with a mini-review of an RTS - The Great War: Western Front
After a month-long interruption (sometimes, life just refuses to get back on track), I am back to posting. Today, what I’ve got is a recommendation for an RTS game, but not for the reasons most people might think... because this RTS is The Great War: Western Front, the first RTS about World War 1 that I can remember seeing, and a very well-made one at that.
Tumblr media
Content warning: descriptions of how abysmal the World War 1 tactics were, and how pointlessly these tactics wasted the lives of WW1 soldiers.
On the technical side, the game is made by Petroglyph - the studio built on the remnants of Westwood, the original devs of Command & Conquer - and it’s more similar in quality to Star Wars: Empire at War (one of their best outings) than Grey Goo or Forged Battalion (which are comparatively more meh). The gameplay itself is surprisingly addictive, in that “just one more turn“ manner - the game combines real-time and turn-based modes, like Total War - and because this is WW1, there is an interesting trench-building mechanic and asymmetry between attacker and defender. If that was the biggest noteworthy thing in the game, though, it would be a footnote and that’d be it; the reason to actually make a post about it is that it really gets across the sheer horror of World War 1 trench warfare, much more successfully than even other pop-WW1 games with an infusion of historical authenticity (e.g. Battlefield 1).
Tumblr media
Let me give you the most blatant example. For the attacking force, the only way to approach enemy trenches safely is to constantly bombard them with artillery, suppressing machine gunners and riflemen so that they can’t fire back, while also destroying as much of the enemy line as possible and dodging enemy defensive artillery. But the realities of limited supply mean that even if you do that, and even if you flank the enemy trenches in early war (when fortification is not ubiquitous), a lot of soldiers on your side are still going to die. But the real horror begins when the computer player (in my case, on the standard difficulty, which affords advantages to neither the player nor the computer) attacks your side without doing those kinds of preparatory barrages, even when it’s got artillery superiority, and instead just repeats what the biggest names in WW1 failure - like Conrad von Hötzendorf and Luigi Cadorna - did, sending masses of infantry to overwhelm the defense and letting the infantrymen die in droves. Regardless of whether you defend well or not (the AI is actually quite good at probing for weaknesses in your line, which makes its behavior even more damning of real-life WW1 tactics), it’s easy to end up with a ceasefire after the AI side exhausts its resources, then see your losses at 3000 soldiers (which would be horrific enough), and enemy losses at 15000 soldiers with nothing gained (which is just atrocious). And, very conspicuously, the game is rated T for Teen; it doesn’t even need any graphic depictions of deaths or injuries to show how horrific - and wasteful - World War 1 was.
As a summary, I would recommend this game to any RTS fans who want to challenge themselves with limiting the damages of WW1 and ending it faster than the real-life incompetent commanders and stuck-in-the-past militaries of the time did... or to anyone who has the skills to play RTS games and wants to see for themselves how bad WW1 actually got.

Watched the super bowl for the first time because I am unfortunately a taylor swift lesbian (not a gaylor) and jesus christ I'm not sure anything happened for the first 3 or so hours but I got so stressed out when I thought the Chiefs were gonna lose. I think I get sports now. Also American Football is a bad game.
God you Swifties are going to be so spoiled if Taylor stays with Travis long term. You started following football five months ago and your team won the super bowl on your first goddamn season. You've all slipped and fallen into bandwagoning for a dynasty and it's going to make you all the most insufferable fanbase in football, and keep in mind this includes both Boston and Philadelphia sports fans so that is a VERY high bar to clear.
You have yet to learn that the core experience of being a football fan is the agonizing pain of watching your team lose a crucial game by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory right before your eyes. I don't see Mahomes' bullshit slowing down any time soon so after Taylor and Travis break up I think she should have to date Josh Allen for a few years just to even things out a bit. There must be some degree of justice in this cruel, unforgiving world.

The Man in the Wall sounded desperate to get their hands on that last page because it contained the one thing that could stop it. The one bit of Albrecht Entrati that he had not already fully consumed.
At the same time, it was Loid's bitterness, his unwillingness to hear out the man who hurt him, which was fuelling TMITW's plan to materialize in the universe. The vast indifference, as it were.
And understanding this, the Tenno utilized the decrepit, run down giant (which TMITW casually disregards as "abandoned") to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. To give Loid a reason to reject indifference. To utilize the last gift Albrecht Entrati left for Loid.
The Man in the Wall was stopped not by any plans or machines. It was stopped by oLd MaN YaOI.
