Rescue Basil:

Basil is an example of an impulse bought snake who’s owner grew tired of her after less than a year. She had 2 layers of stuck shed that took a few days to come off. She had 3 layers of stuck eye caps. She was around 3 1/2 feet long stuck in a 20 gallon tank. Many believe ball pythons should be kept in small enclosures this is not correct. Minimum for each ball python is different the rule of thumb is the snake should be able to stretch out completely if needed. So if your ball python is 6 feet long at least 1 section of your enclosure should be long enough for it to stretch out completely. The absolute minimum for any ball python should be a 40 gallon breeder or a 40 gallon long. As soon as I got Basil she was put into a 40 gallon long. She is a good example of why if you want to get a reptile you should 1) do your research BEFORE getting the animal not while looking at it or the day you get it (extraneous circumstances excepted) 2) be aware of the life span of the animal and be prepared to keep it for that long (again things happen but just for normal circumstances be prepared). Basil was also fairly thin because she was being kept on a diet of small mice when she was actually needing rat pups. Once she started eating properly sized meals she has made a full recovery and never has trouble shedding!
