It is Usagi / Chibi-Usa Birthday Week (on June 30th), so it seemed like a good time to do stories on this topic. Although after I finished looking through it, majority are for Mamoru’s birthday BUT it seemed fitting to include them as well. This is my room for a week at The Monroe Institute.
Well the room is bigger than this but this is where I sleep and do all of my OBE work.
We do yoga and then eat breakfast and have a morning seminar to teach us what we will be up to all morning then we go to our little bed and have our OBE time… and we do that a few times -seminar- OBE - discuss -repeat- until afternoonish . We have a long break to play outside or do what ever we want… followed by a few more sessions of OBE then dinner and a night seminar. Then we sleep with hemi-sync sounds on all night. Monroe’s voice wakes us up with a good morning meditation then we do it all again.
Oh and there’s no clocks here. I don’t even know what time we get woken up at.Time does not exist. Until I turn my phone lol. They don’t even tell us how long our out of body sessions are. I think they are like an hour each but I truly have no clue. It rained today so the sun was hidden and I literally couldn’t tell you what time it was until I turned my phone on so I could journal this.
I am overloaded with information but miss home and the dog and pep a lot.
Everyone has a Roomie except me. There are two little beds in each room and two little desks and supposed to be two people.
There are 17 people here. 3 of which are also young girls.
There’s a married couple from France, a shaman chick from Ireland, a guy from Russia, a few from Canada, a few from the USA my new friend Jess from Australia..
Sam is 24 from Georgia and we have the same birthday and this is her first time exposed to anything like this ever, her boyfriends mom just sent her here because she felt she would like it. She has never meditated and never even talked about spirit life to anyone ever. It’s pretty cool. She’s so jazzed.
Jessie came all the way from Australia for this and she’s 33, lesbian who’s fiancé broke up with her and she’s on a solo journey. She’s actually flying back to Colorado the same day I am and is going to car camp where ever she wants all over Colorado for two weeks after this experience.
oh and she’s a yoga teacher and an actress. And I heard her playing guitar today too.
Of course, they are roommates and I’m all alone in this strange bed with these strange experiences and strange Hemi-sync sounds.
Then Caitlyn from Ireland who’s a shaman and I don’t know much about her- she’s in another wing of the house so I only see her at group meetings. She seems cool and reminds me of a fairy. She wears long skirts that are really unattractive and reminds me of kimmy from unbreakable- the way she looks. Sy and his buddy Steve - Sy is like 45 and works for IBM and may or may not be gay. He’s super funny and his good friend Steve is here with him. Steve is rad and just quit IBM so he could be free from the business world. They both loved me rift away and we crack jokes about the bad food but they are really powerful healers. They have been to TMI before and love the voyages. We laughed about reiki and how we don’t know what the hell it is even though they are both masters. They are extra awesome and have both lived in boulder and San Francisco too. Martine is French woman who I really like. She seems to be in her 70s and she’s got a real tight facelift and boob job and wears Chanel clothing and beautiful jewelry and wears the most beautiful perfume ( angle) from Neman Marcus. I know because I used to wear it. When I’m old I want to dress like her. She wore an all white and silver silk pleated pants suit yesterday with huge crunchy jewelry that I just loved. Her husband Danielle is the token French asshole who makes funny jokes about French people being jerks. They live in the heart of Paris and he helped start vista print. She broke her back jumping out of a window ( I don’t know why yet but I think she was getting attacked by an intruder in her home … I think I overheard her say that) but I am not 100 on that yet. So they are bad ass. My teachers have been doing this work for the last 30 years. And they are a hoot. Peter and Scott, who seem to be in their 70s Peter used to work at the pentagon and was awarded two medals by the queen of England for helping England tap into Russia during their dispute in the 80s via remote viewing! He wasn’t a part of stargate but he’s close knit with them. He says he can now talk about his time as a remote viewer for the government but was told to keep quiet for 20 years about it. I can tell he is still slightly apprehensive talking about his work with the military and government but who wouldn’t be. Scott… I’m not too sure about Scott yet. I don’t know his back story. He’s just very funny- he reminds me of a character from he tv show Superstore who plays the GM. Real awkward! But he’s like spent half of his life out of body ….so it’s to be expected. The whole place is stuck in the 70s from the art to the food. The food is literally what grandma would bring to church. I’m just waiting until I see a jello marshmallow ambrosia. Haha I think it’s the same chef since they opened the place in the early 70s. The old people love the food…Haha I have been eating vegan and drinking decaf coffee lol I’m sure the couple from France hates the food as much as I do though. I have been writing my actual OBE in my journal but I’ll put some noteworthy experiences on here soon.. Idk why the spacing is all strange with this post but sorry for that.

Though it is a live recording of a DJ set, Driftmoon insists that this is his third artist album. Fair enough - it is all his music, though there are many collabs and his remix of John O’Callaghan & Audrey Gallagher’s classic “Big Sky”, but aside from an instrumental version of a track that featured on his last album “Invictus” it’s all previously unreleased. He wanted to switch it up and make the ‘live performance’ the first way these tracks were heard. And like many a DJ set, more often than an album, the biggest and best tracks are in the last third of the album, and there are some mammoth tunes here.

They broaden their sound palette here too with sampled drum loops and heavier riffs in places.

Sleep Token “Sundowning”
On paper Sleep Token, a mysterious, masked unit of unnamed musicians, who worship an ancient deity called “Sleep”, would make you think they made incredibly sinister black or doom metal. For the most part though they are bewitching soundscapes, often minimal, with huge melodic vocals, and electronic touches. Worship.

The Thrillseekers present Hydra “Altered State”
Despite releasing his first music in 1999, and releasing a steady stream of singles since, Steve Helstrip only delivered his debut album as The Thrillseekers in 2016. For this, his 2nd opus, he's decided to release under his Hydra alias. And what a beauty it is. Mostly instrumental, apart from a new reworking of The Thrillseekers classic "The Last Time" with vocals from Fisher, it is a masterclass in sublime, chilled, Balearic trance. Reminiscent of the first couple of Chicane albums, and makes you feel like you are blissed out on a beautiful, sunny beach.

Jimmy Eat World “Surviving”
"Surviving" is Jimmy Eat World's 10th album. There are little touches of an expansion to their sound, but if you are familiar with their brand of American rock, then you'll know pretty much what to expect. This is undoubtedly a Jimmy Eat World album. It is, however, a very, very good one. One of the strongest they've ever done in my opinion, probably only with "Bleed American" as any kind of competition.

Age Of Rampage “Empire City”
Age Of Rampage deliver a plethora of breakbeat stompers on their debut album. Their love for acts like The Prodigy would be evident even without the first track sampling a Keith Flint interview, but the old school is delivered with relish here. If you love 90s breakbeat acts such as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Freestylers etc, this is a very worthy listen. Such a shame Russian breakbeat label Criminal Tribe don't do physical releases.

Hands Off Gretel are an effervescent blend of punk and grunge, led by the fierce Lauren Tate. A love of 90s rock is evident. "I Want The World", their 2nd album, is packed full of killer tunes.

Dido “Still On My Mind”
I’ve loved Dido’s voice since the early days of Faithless, so when she started releasing her own music I’ve always liked it to varying degrees (loved some of it, some of it a bit meh). This is her best album since “No Angel” in my opinion. It’s chilled, ethereal, and rather beautiful, and has been one of my most listened to albums in 2019. The title track is absolutely one of my favourite tracks of the year. I’m surprised it is top 10, but it had to be.

Wislov “Madness From Paradise”
Kniteforce Records and their sister labels have been a driving force in the old-school hardcore (or ‘rave’ as many early 90s compilations would call it) revival. Most of their releases are new music, just done in the old style, with fresh touches. Wislov is one of, if not the, greatest talent in this scene, and after a bunch of EPs and a slew of great tunes, this debut album is unleashed. And it’s a cracker. If you love that old-school sound you will find much to love here.

HÆLOS “Any Random Kindness”
Mesmerising, utterly beautiful, electronic tunes, with lush vocals. Picking up where their 2016 debut album “Full Circle” left off, but stepping up a notch. There is a heavy rave influence, but this is definitely made for the post-party, the comedown, the chill out time, the blissed out euphoria after the full on euphoria. Every time I hear this album I discover something new, and love it more. Wonderful.

Yonaka “Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow”
Yonaka may veer to the poppier end of alternative-rock, but they know how to write a hell of a tune. Many of them in fact. 11 feature here on their debut album, released after a string of quality EPs and singles got them some exposure over the last couple of years. Hooks aplenty, huge choruses, riffs and electronics.

Anavae “45″
Fans of Anavae have been waiting a long time for this. The debut album many thought may never come. 8 years on from their debut single and 7 years after their debut EP “Into The Aether”, and following a bunch of EPs and singles in the interim, it is finally here. And I’m sure very few will be left disappointed. Rebecca Need-Menear and Jamie Finch deliver a typically varied alternative-rock album, veering at times into poppier territory, and others into moody trip-hop-esque tracks. Other times they stick to simple, yet epic, rock tunes like on the massive “High”. If you don’t know this band, check them out.

Dream State “Primrose Path”
Dream State progress in sound and technical ability with each release. From 2015′s debut EP “Consequences”, through last year’s excellent “Recovery” EP to this, their debut album. And it’s a pretty epic affair. Chunky riffs, pounding drumming, powerful vocals (both in aggressive and melodic turns from CJ Gilpin) with a massive, widescreen feel to the production. The Welsh 4-piece are often classed as post-hardcore, but that is far too limiting a description for a band with such obvious ambition. Class.

Machineheart “People Change”
Lush, shimmery, ethereal alt pop from this L.A. quartet fronted by the fabulous vocals of Stevie Scott. A cracking album from start to finish but a particular mention goes to upbeat (almost breakbeat styled) track "Overgrown" which is one of the best tracks I've heard all year. If you like bands like London Grammar or HÆLOS, give this album a spin.

Black Futures “Never Not Nothing”
Black Futures are a genre meshing riot. They've been called "Anarchic Electro Psych Punk Noise", "industrial noise-punk" and label themselves as "Future Punk". They have the sensibilities of a punk band and a dance band simultaneously. There's Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream guesting, as is rapper P.O.S. More than once have they been described as a mix of Death From Above 1979 & The Chemical Brothers. It's a future party, a post-apocalyptic riot. Give it a listen.

Dallas Kalevala “Dallas Kalevala”
Dallas Kalevala hail from Finland and have been called fierce subarctic pop music. Whether they called themselves this I'm not sure. What it sounds like to me is a brilliant, varied pop album, slightly camp, with fantastic electronic production and some full on pounding dance beats. 9 brilliantly written tracks, that all sound different, but somehow sound like they come from the same band and belong together. There is a feeling Dallas Kalevala would be somewhat polarising. There's no way they'll be everyone's cup of tea (which suggests they are doing something right), but those that get them will love them a whole lot.

The Chemical Brothers “No Geography”
To make their 9th album The Chemical Brothers returned to the equipment they used to make their first two albums. And though "No Geography" doesn't sound like "Exit Planet Dust" or "Dig Your Own Hole", it feels like them. Consequently it is arguably their best album since them, but it is definitely their best since 2002's "Come With Us". It feels a bit old school, but also fresh and new. Tracks flow into each other seamlessly making the album feel like a complete body of work rather than a collection of tracks, and it is utterly brilliant throughout. Joyous.

Welcome to the Jungle [Big Daddy / Guns & Roses & Tokens] CRAPPY COVER

I’m a fan of a good mash-up/cover. Case in point, love me some Beatallica and Rock Sugar.
A good mash up takes two songs that have something similar and makes those similarities play off each other. When the similarity is that the third word of the song is “jungle” you might want to rethink your strategy. What I’m basically saying here is there’s no way “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns and Roses and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by the Tokens* should not even be aloud in the same room.
But for some god forsaken reason, Big Daddy decided to do that. Credit while credit is due, I’ll admit, they all but invented the mash up genre but taking lyrics to current songs and singing them to 50’s and 60’s music (Current being a relative term since this was recorded many many moons ago). Apparently they had some moderate success at one point in their career with a song called “Hamster Love.” I was going to Google to see if that was some sort of Dr. Demento parody of Captain and Tenille’s “Muskrat Love” but I quickly abandoned that search when every result on the first page had to do with Richard Gere.
Back to this particular track, It’s like they said … “Hey maybe if we suck bad enough, Adam Sandler (whose old lady voice sounds exactly like Axl Rose) will name a movie after us, and it’ll suck too!” That, ladies and gentlemen, is why it’s a “Crappy Cover.”
*Yes, there’s a whole legal mess about who “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” belongs to, I credit it here to the Tokens, because, right or wrong, the first time the song was copyrighted in the USA with that title, it was to the Tokens.
