I think the thing that makes the Phoenix-Maya dynamic so uniquely excellent is that they’re both simultaneously the silly ridiculous one and the exasperated voice of reason in the relationship. Like, they’re stepping into a pitch-black room and Maya’s like “haha Nick are you scaaaaared?” but she’s hiding behind him the whole time. Or they’re watching a sappy movie and Phoenix is like “pfff Maya are you really getting all emotional about this?” but he’s like sniffling and wiping at his eyes. They’re both pathetic losers who share one brain cell that bounces back and forth between them and it’s just. So good

It’s a bit late, since it took me a bit to see ATSV & then even longer to start seeing posts come across my dash, but apparently people are hating? on Gwen??? And actually excusing Miguel??
I loved how this movie focused more on Gwen and her familial issues. The first one gave us Peter B. Parker needing a son figure to realize that he could commit and be a parent as a B plot. This one gave us Gwen trying to figure out how to cope with rejection from the only remaining part of her support system. And people are hating on her for not getting in touch with Miles???
Her arc in this movie was all about the way that her support system and people she loved either died or turned on her. No wonder that she wouldn’t want to reach out to Miles when the place that accepted her forbid it. Miguel gave her a new support system, which she desperately needed. And Hobie provided both understanding and support, when she really didn’t have anyone else to turn to. Yes, Peter B. was there, but he has Mayday AND MJ to prioritize in addition to being Spiderman. Gwen (understandably) would feel like she was forcefully inserting herself if she asked for help. Whereas Hobie is already anti-system and seems to be the only one to really recognize that Gwen doesn’t just need to focus on “the mission”. Jess was trying to be a good authority figure, but she ultimately prioritized Miguel’s mission over Gwen, since she’d been doing it for years. I do think she saw her role in Gwen’s life as a mentor, she was just so used to following Miguel that it didn’t occur to her to stop. Gwen clearly looks up to Jess and wants her approval, along with Miguel’s, hence her hesitation to break the rules by contacting Miles.
This is a bit more of a rant than a deep analysis, but I can’t believe that people could excuse Miguel clearly taking over someone else’s life but draw the line at Gwen not reaching out for fear of being rejected by one of her only friends.
Side note: I really missed Spidernoir & Spiderham. I want to see all of Soidernoir’s adventures w/ color in the Spidermen HQ

but seriously if you see someone call themselves “proship” and you think “this person is a pedophile” without any other context, this is your sign to log off of social media. there is still time.
social media is an amazing tool for connecting with people across the world for community and solidarity, but it is also a hellscape of brainworms and horrible opinions, such as the reduction of “this is part of a complicated discussion about critical consumption and morality in media” down to “if you write/draw/think about Bad Things™️ in fiction with exclusively fictional characters then you are defending those Bad Things™️ happening to real people.”
do you see how this is an insane leap in logic? you don’t get to pick and choose what Bad Things™️ are permissible to explore and present in media, and so long as we’re talking about fictional characters—and they’ve hopefully put up some Dead Dove content warnings—no harm is being done. you are making dangerous and irresponsible accusations against people, independent of their actions.

finn asked simon if he's talked to marceline about his disconnection with futuristic humans, his grief about Betty, and his hopelessness.
that makes sense. simon and marceline are incredibly close, and he beamed as soon as he heard her voice over the phone. i hope they do talk.
it's been a few days since the episodes premiered, and I've been thinking a lot about finn.
i've seen a few posts about how martin-like he's acting, how he seems to be taking jake's optimism and instead insisting that everything is OK. he's violent and impulsive, beyond that even when he was 12. he willingly put simon in life-threatening danger, even though -- again, way back to the START of the show. we're talking, like, s1e24 "What Have You Done? -- finn's "hero code" would never have allowed for that.
...which made me think of "The Tower" (S6E4).
if it's been a minute since you've seen it: finn is building a tower into space, a tower where he's going to see his dad (and rip off his arm). throughout the episode, pb and jake bicker whether it's healthy for finn to seek revenge. pb ultimately intervenes, and finn is forced to process his feelings.
finn asked if simon has talked to marcy, but has finn talked to bonnie?
they were always friendly with each other, but by the end of the series (S6E24 "The Pajama War" or even the finale), pb and finn were established to be close, very good friends.
i think pb would be genuinely upset when she realized how much finn was struggling underneath the surface however-long it's been since jake passed, and she'd probably know what to look for in finn.
not only is finn acting like martin, but it's painfully minerva. he's so focused on his own version of helping others that he's neglecting himself and his needs, and it is. breaking my heart.
