Earthbound
Tumblr media
earthbound definition: attached or restricted to the earth.
In which Cole stands up to a tyrant that is cruel and unjust deep within the mountain. Because he made a promise.
🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤
It doesn’t take a genius to see that Cole’s losing.
The cave is in chaos; the sound of screams and clanging weapons fill the air as two sides clash against each other.
Vangelis and the Skull are toying with him, and he knows it: they’re circling him, trying to throw him off by telling lies about his mother. Cole blocks the hits from Vangelis and the blasts from the Skull, feeling like a fly they were winding up in a web of lies.
Vangelis rises above him, resembling a winged creature of death with his blank mask and the glowing Skull of Hazza D’ur in hand. “And now, her deceit has doomed you!”
“Her only son,” the Skull rasps.
Vangelis hurls the Skull at Cole; growing brighter and brighter the closer it gets. He stands his ground and braces himself.
The Skull collides, and the blades …
… shatter.
Cole is thrown back, the air knocked out of his lungs as his body rolls to a stop. He sits up weakly, before throwing back his mask to gasp at the sight of the broken Blades of Deliverance.
“No!” He cries. With trembling fingers, his gloved hands hold onto the shattered pieces of the black and white blades. “It can’t be …”
His mother … lied …
“It is,” Vangelis glides towards him menacingly. “And now, you will pay the price for your mother’s lies.”
“Lies, deceit,” the Skull rasps.
Cole screams in pain as the Skull unleashes fire upon his fallen form.
“Your cause is lost.”
More fire.
“Have the grace to admit defeat.”
More fire. More, more. Blistering pain wreaks havoc across his broken body.
It’s hopeless. He’s finished. He’s too weak. It’s over. He just wants to —
He remembers his mother.
🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤
“I want you to promise me, Cole. That you will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust. Always.”
“Always.”
🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤 🪨 🌋🖤 🪨 🌋 🖤
His mother … her strength hadn’t come from the Blades of Deliverance. She’s always been strong. She had been sick all his life, yet no matter how weak her body had gotten she had moved through her life with implacable momentum. Impossible to sway or dissuade. Ever since he was young, his mom had power — from her beliefs … and from the Earth.
“It was her,” he realizes. “It wasn't the blades. It was her. The power inside my mother.” The power inside of me, his heart whispers. Not the Spinjitzu Burst. The power of Earth.
“It was all her.”
“Alas,” Vangelis laughs cruelly. “You are not half the warrior your mother was.”
Pain and grief bite through his being, but Cole forces himself to his feet to glare at the Skull Sorcerer. “Maybe not, but I am her son.” Conviction buries itself deep into his being. “And I made her a promise to stand up to tyrants like you! Always!”
The mountain rumbles its agreement. Cole digs his fingers into the rock and feels it mold around the shape of them. Every grain of earth begins to glow as his power seeps into it.
“What are you doing? What is this!” The Skull Sorcerer demands.
“It's the Burst!” He barely hears Master Wu cry above his roaring element.
But no. It's not, and Cole can feel it. It's something different. Deeper.
His power was strongest when he was the closest to the earth and he’s never been farther underground. He was basically at the bottom of the world. Never has he been more surrounded by the very thing that powered him. The Skull Sorcerer thought he was burying him — but what if bringing him closer to his full strength? To the source of his elemental power?
Cole could feel it — the connection to the earth. He could feel it reaching out towards him, coming from the ground all around him.
He stands and lets it in. He let the energy of the earth infuse him, deep into his core and surging forward. The Skull of Hazza D’ur comes flying forward to finish him off and Cole bursts to life.
Unparalleled power explodes from the earth, bright and blinding, and Cole feels more alive than ever. His skin disappears, being replaced with magma and rock as the mountain quakes under his force.
The battle halts as everyone stops at the sheer force of the Earth; Ninja gape in shock, the Shintarians fly back in fear, the cave-dwellers stare with awe.
“Son of Lilly,” the Geckle and Munce whisper.
Cole rises with the power of the Earth; the Skull spiraling, lost, as he reaches for it with a molten hand and throws it down against the Earth. Destroying it.
The battle — one that had been reigning in secret for decades — is finally over.

Vania dips her head as the last servant that has finished attending her and shuts the door.
She takes a deep breath, listening to the fading footsteps of the servant and the guards clanking armor move away.
Then she springs into action.
She quickly changes, flying out of her normal, queenly wardrobe into more plain, neutral robes. She glances at Chompy, who’s watching her from his bed. She touches the dragon’s head.
“I’ll be back before morning — promise,” she whispers. He makes a chattering noise, telling her he’s displeased. “I know! I will, I promise. I just …” she bites her lip. “I just can’t leave him alone down there.”
Maybe Chompy can hear the pain in her voice, because he doesn’t argue — simply pushes his head into her hand with a small chur of forgiveness.
Vania pushes past the grief and stands, lighting a candle before leaving. She sneaks through her own palace silently, moving past guards like a ninja as she heads for the gardens.
She makes her way to the entrance of the garden alcove leading into the mountain, her heart steadily beating harder. The caves beneath the mountain were deserted, with the Geckle and Munce people deciding that they wanted to live their new lives above the mountain.
She scurries down; down and down the winding mountain, past cramped caverns and twisting turns, the cloying darkness only fought off by a single flame.
Finally she reaches it.
The Heart of the Mountain.
The legendary temple for the Masters of Earth. Ancient scriptures written in the Old Tongue read: Let pass through here, into this refuge and sanctuary, only those who are One with the Earth. Orange flames danced off the walls, even though no one had been down here to light them. Power shined through the giant doorway as Vania drew nearer.
Creak …
The door opened slightly.
Vania went inside, following the carved path molded by Geckle and Munce. Statues of ancient Earth Masters and their stories echoes around her, and she ignores the familiar goosebumps that rise along her skin. Her eyes linger on the statue of Lilly, before moving on.
Statues are more than solid pieces of art. They are immovable, unbreakable monuments that enrich storytelling, making the experience of living more profound and unforgettable. They remind us of the strength of traditions, the power of history, and the enduring spirit that echoes throughout the ages.
She draws closer to the one standing in the middle, heart beating loudly in her chest. It's tall and strong, newly carved. Awake and glowing with the surging elemental energy. She reads the plaque in front of it.
This statue was carved with love and gratitude by Geckle, Munce, and Shintarian craftsmen in honor of Cole Brookstone: Ninja, brother, and son.
Vania places the candle on the stone ledge and takes a seat on it, facing away from the statue. It feels like yesterday she was trapped in here with the Upply and Master Wu, trying to figure out a way to stop her father. She forces the memories away when she feels the mountain move.
“Hello, Cole,” she says softly. The Earth rumbles under her feet, before slowly forming and making a vague shape of the person she used to know. Orange light shines through the cracks of rock as he peers at her curiously, waiting.
Vania smiles.
“So, what story would you like to hear today?”

Rotten Origin
You feel cold. Since the day you arrived, there’s been a sting in your heart and a familiar chill that runs down your spine.
You can see, but refuse to look. You are blind.
You can hear, but refuse to listen. You are deaf.
You can speak, but refuse to talk. You are silent.
“Who DARES?” Your mouth moves. You feel your head twitch and your body is puppetted to glare at the intruder upon your domain. “WHO DARES TO DISTURB THE WORK?!”
A muffled voice answers, two others echoing after it. You cannot see. You cannot hear. You cannot speak. Your body moves and suddenly there is only one. “You have meddled in the wrong place-”
“WAIT!” Someone speaks. Someone... who was not you.
Your vision clears. Someone young and brimming with life is standing in front of you. You stare blankly. Stubborn, you glance down at the other piece of yourself- the one that is supposed to be in control. It sits there, green and glowing, but silent.
The intruder blathers on about lands you used to live on, but no longer associate with.
Your thoughts are scrambled. They scream for blood. They scream for mercy. They scream, scrabbling at the ground and clawing out for air. They nestle deep into the earth, searching for safety and praying for warmth.
You can hear the intruder, and if you so choose, could see them too.
“...SOMEONE NEEDS TO STAND UP FOR WHAT’S RIGHT-”
“What.” Your head snaps up towards the intruder. For the first time in a long time you feel your feet touch ground. Your hands clench and you stomp with rage. The whole cave shakes violently and rocks fall from the ceiling. Your skull shrieks and hisses at the intruder, but you cannot hear it. The panic it’s muffled words cause only serves to make you angrier.
Your hand grasps the handle of a hammer. A hammer you carved from the cursed ground you walk.
...
You fight, blinded by a rage that has roared inside you for so long.
For a moment you feel a horrid pain burn throughout your body, but it leaves you just as fast as it came. Though painful, it does nothing to stop your devastating blows from cracking fissures below both your and your opponent’s feet.
Suddenly, your body grows heavy. Your bones hurt as they continue to support you upright. You’re thrown forward. Something warm, soft, breathing is laying on your back, pinning you down.
...You cease struggling and finally look at the intruders in front of you. The small green one is still talking, but you tune him out. You see a man in a blue hat, and the one on top of you, pinning you down, is wearing red. Warmth. Red rolls his eyes and speaks. “I don’t think he’s hearing much of anything, kid.”
Slowly, your eyes lock onto the green one’s. He speaks in a curt tone, seemingly tired of not being heard. “One of your parents was the last master of earth. You need to come with us.”
...for the first time in a long time, you want something.
Your skull screams bloody murder, hissing and spitting as you agree to follow the small group. The skull claws at your mind, telling you it still has an army to build.
Something inside you has crying, crumbling and quaking for so, so long. Though you fear it, you take control for the first time in a long time.

DECIDED TO DRAW SOME VILLAIN!NINJA TINGZ
Basically this AU is based on alternate events in which the ninja aren’t able to save each other. Most of them had the strength to stop themselves from fighting their family but once they were turned, they became a group.
Nya is technically the first one to “turn to the dark side” but was restored. Or so they thought.
She still have a small amount of dark matter so that it didn’t affect her behavior but it appeared when she eventually got stuck in her elemental form.
Sensei Wu was next to be turned and now runs the evil group as Techno Wu.
Kai was next. He had managed to retrieve the staff from Chen but no one was able to take it away from it so it slowly took over his body and mind to the point that a voice was manifested within his mind.
Lloyd is fairly simple. When Morro possessed him, they weren’t able to really separate them since it was pretty much only Jay, Cole, and Zane at that point.
Zane, similarly to Lloyd, got stuck as the Ice Emperor because the other ninja were turned and didn’t particularly care about restoring Zane.
Jay became emperor of Prime Empire after forcing his way into the game’s code. This could’ve potentially been a coping mechanism but it is uncertain. Nevertheless, he became a glitch in the world and would travel between the game world and reality to recruit new players for his game.
Sensing that it's about to be destroyed, the skull tried to corrupt Cole right before his burst and it managed to work and since it got control over an elemental, it abandoned Vangelis and made him powerless, allowing Cole to be the new Skull Sorcerer.
Also keep in mind that this is all from memory and we're aware that it doesn't make much sense at the moment 😭

Art piece I did of my OC Jes.
Yes, the right side of her face deliberately has no green, because her eyes are heterochromatic, and change color due to her emotions. However, since I don't have the colors for the majority of her emotions placed down right now, I'm just using the colors her eyes become when she's using her elemental powers of death.
Of course, there are instances in her story where she makes her eyes homochromatic in order to hide her identity as the Skull Sorcerer and elemental master of death, making both her eyes green (and struggling to not let her eyes randomly change color at intense emotions)
But once her identity's revealed (first time involving an incident with a cult. Same incident that made her adopt a little sister), she lets her eyes do whatever the fuck they're going to do.
Also, in my AU, Vangelis is a fraud Skull Sorcerer, because a) he's not an elemental master or elemental being of death, & b) because he's not even a sorcerer.
Hazza'Dur is an actual Skull Sorcerer, but he is scorned because of all the horrible shit he did, and the consequences of his actions even after his death. Also, he's a lot worse in my AU than he is in the show. And though Vangelis is also a horrible person, Hazza'Dur uses him (without his knowledge) to attempt to get what he wants (which of course gets ruined by Cole in MotM, though Cole has no idea about Hazza'Dur, due to the season playing out exactly the same (Just like all the other canon seasons, because my AU generally takes place after them)).

Whumptober Day 12: I think I’ve broken something
Broken Trust
867 Words; Skull Sorcerer Cole AU
@mcfanely
Lloyd kicked at the bars of the cage. This whole situation was so frustrating.
What was even more frustrating, though, was that Lloyd had the distinct feeling that this was all his fault. Or at least partly his fault. Any number of people could be at fault, really, but Lloyd was certain he was one of those people.
He’d been with Cole when they’d encountered the skull, and if they hadn’t gotten separated—Lloyd’s fault—then that stupid skull might not have taken over.
And it had to be controlling Cole directly, because Lloyd knew Cole. Cole wouldn’t trade the team for anything. He was solid, dependable, loyal.
And right now he was anything but.
And Lloyd couldn’t help but feel at fault.
Down below, Geckles and Munce were milling around, unsure what to do with themselves. Skeletons were patrolling around the cavern, and the skeletal dragon—Griefbringer—was lying in pieces all throughout, like a broken toy smashed on the ground.
Lloyd hoped he and the others weren’t going to end up like that.
+=+=+=+=+
The ninja didn’t have to wait long. Soon enough, Cole had flown up to their cage, hovering around it. His mask was down—there was no point in hiding himself, now.
Kai growled. “Let us out of this cage already, asshole!”
“No, I don’t think I will.” Cole responded, the skull’s teeth chattering.
“Cole, c’mon.” Jay pleaded, “We’re your friends.”
At that, Cole laughed harshly. “Friends? I’m surprised you remember my name!”
“Of course we remember you!” Zane insisted. “Why wouldn’t we?”
“I find that hard to believe.” Cole snarled. The skull chattered, then screeched. “Lies! Falsehoods!”
“Cole, pleas—”
Cole cut Lloyd off with a wave of his hand. “Just don’t.” He started flying back and forth, as though he were pacing, the skull trailing lazily behind him. “Don’t try to tell me that you care enough to remember me. You certainly didn’t on the Day of the Departed.”
“But we do care, Cole!” Jay insisted, sounding desperate, “There must have been some kind of magic going on, Cole. How else could we have forgotten you?”
“My father didn’t.” Cole said numbly, staring Jay down. He started to stalk towards the cage, circling it slowly. “He was worried about me, because I wasn’t there when I said I’d be, but you—” his voice hitched, “You walked right through me like I wasn’t even there.”
Cole took a moment to compose himself. “I think of you all as family. I could barely imagine a life without you.” He fixed them with a hurt gaze. “And I thought you felt the same.” He scowled. “Guess I was just stupid.” He said bitterly.
Kai hissed. “If you really think that we don’t care, Cole, then you are stupid.”
“Oh, really? You really, truly care?” Cole had stopped pacing. “Then why don’t you explain to me why it always feels like I’m just a background character!” Cole’s shoulders heaved, his breath coming out in shaking gasps.
He sighed. “I’m just so tired. Of this. Of that. Of everything.”
Zane put his hands up nonthreateningly. “Cole—”
“Do you know what it feels like?” Cole’s voice pitched higher in hysteria. “Do you know what it feels like to fade away forever? To be gone? And to not be able to say goodbye because nobody can see or hear you? Do you?”
The ninja had nothing to say to that.
Cole didn’t expect them to say anything. He’d hoped they’d say something, but really, he should have known better than that.
The silence stretched on.
The skull shook its mandible, making its teeth clatter quietly.
“Fuck.” Cole ran a hand through his hair. “Am I really that unimportant?” He laughed sardonically.
Jay tried again. “Cole, please. We do care about you. You’re our brother.” He glared. “It’s that damned skull that’s gotten into your head! What it’s telling you isn’t real!”
“Yeah!” Kai added, “You need to stop listening to that thing!” The others voiced their agreement, voices blurring together into a single plea.
“Insolence! Falsehoods!” The skull screeched, its voice only adding to the din. The noise grated on Cole.
“SHUT UP!” The cavern shook at Cole’s cry, subsiding a moment later.
All was silent. Even the Munce and Geckles below had turned their attention to the proceedings above.
Cole’s shoulders were shaking, a familiar orange glow starting to fade from his arms and eyes. “Everyone shut up.” He snarled, “Just stop talking.”
Scowling, Cole started to do that aerial pacing again. “I’m so tired of listening to your bullshit. Make up all the excuses you want—I’m done. I’m done feeling like I don’t even matter.” He turned around, as if to fly away.
“And I’m done being left behind to rot.”
The skull bobbed up and down, as if to say it knew all too well. And it might, having spent so long in those mines, waiting for someone to make use of its unearthly power. It stared at the ninja for a moment longer, then turned around to follow Cole down.
The ninja looked at one another uneasily. Whatever Cole was planning, it couldn’t possibly be good.
All they could do right now was hope they could get their brother back.

Sorry if you think I'm interfering but I had an idea, what if Cole gets possessed before they fall down to where the upply are but he keeps it a secret, like the skull is still with the skull sorcerer but Cole is more prone to snapping at people and is overall just is a worse mood, but only Wu can really tell. And he trys to talk to Cole but Cole just refuses.
Oooo, for the Skull Sorcerer AU? (I think I dubbed it Hazza D'ur AU but that ain't creative 😂😂😂 I need to think on the name)
And you're totally not interfering! Never think you're interfering!! I love hearing different ideas for my AUs, or ideas for anything really! As soon as something takes root in my mind, I can mould and twist any prompt into an extensive plot idea 😂 within reason
And that idea sounds sick, like the Skull is still topside with Vangelis but it's influence is gradually taking over Cole, YES!
Cole, Wu, Vania and the Uppily are at Rock Bottom, and Cole is becoming harsher and more temperamental as time goes on. Wu notices, but can't place the issue. Vania knows something just isn't right but Cole doesn't pick up on anything.
He just feels... Stronger, but he puts that down to being surrounded by the Earth.
Until they get out from Rock Bottom, and all it takes is one instance where the Skull is that bit closer to Cole, and whatever influence it has over him solidifies.
The difference is, Vangelis and the Skull have things in common. They're both evil, to an extent. Vangelis is morally corrupt.
Cole, he's just himself. He's a ninja, he's good, he wants to do his mother proud.
Everything that happens, it's not Cole. There isn't the power and control balance that's shown between the Skull and King Vangelis, where there's still control exhibited by the host of the power. The power of the Skull of Hazza D'ur fully takes over the Earth Master.
He is the stronger option. But he's sentimental, he's thinking on painful and treasured memories of the past, and that makes him open and susceptible to influence and control.

Note
Cole brakes his promise in s13.
He’s tired.
He’s so tired - and he doesn’t want to fight anymore. He’s been so strong for so long and he just...can’t, anymore.
So he lets go.
And Rina realizes with a cackle that there is an in between au between @mcfanely’s Skull Sorcer Cole and Earth Dragon, and scribbles furiously in her notebook.

Villain AU
So basically this AU just follows canon but every time the ninja gets corrupted, something goes wrong and they stay corrupted.
Nya was the first one to get corrupted due to having dark matter inside her longer than the others. After the defeat of the overlord, they thought that she was cured but the dark matter that had been docile the entire time appeared once more when she became one with the ocean.
Kai got turned when he took the staff of elemental from Chen, he was corrupted by power and the longer the staff stayed in his hand, the more corrupted he became to the point a voice manifested within his mind which was revealed to be the ego of the corrupted staff.
Lloyd got corrupted when Morro possessed him. Something went wrong with the possession and Morro's ego was merged with Lloyd, causing him to grow resentment towards Wu since Morro didn't forgive him in this AU.
Tino got corrupted when the organization managed to take control over him but instead of doing what he was ordered, the chip fired his brain and left him with a psychopathic mentality.
When Zyro was being threatened by Harumi, she had attached something onto Zyro's stone in order to control them but instead, it made them merge with their dragon form and send them to a rampage.
Zane got stuck as the Ice Emperor since Jay and Cole couldn't bring him back with just them and Nya was fighting the dark matter within her which was starting to act up.
During Prime Empire, the three remaining ninja lost Jay since he had forced his way into the game's code, becoming the Emperor of Prime Empire.
Due to this development, he became a glitch in the world and sometimes traveled between the game and reality, kidnapping players.
With only Cole and Nya, they made their way to Shintaro but after Vangelis was defeated, the skull abandoned him and possessed Cole instead.
Due to his growing sense of hopelessness over the loss of his teammates, the skull won over Cole and he became the new Skull Sorcerer.
With only Nya left, she eventually gave up hope and became one with the ocean after Kalamaar's attack.
Fun Fact:
- The first letter of their names got changed to V so that it doesn't get confusing during annual dimensional gatherings. So Vino, Vai, Vole, Vay, Vya, Vane, Vloyd. Only Zyro's name was changed to Cygnus since that's what the Tino of that world called them
- Vino, Cygnus and Vai is an item in this AU
- Vino was the one who amputated Vloyd when his brain got fried by the chip during a sparing session
- Vay talks with lots of static in his voice so barely anyone can understand him most of the time, he goes to a speech therapist after reformed~
- Vole is still a glutton in this AU and has luscious long hair
- Vya can't talk and drowns people when she's upset
- Vane's that one character that always give silent judgemental look when his family is being idiots
- They all go to therapy after being reformed
- Vino's gun has explosive bullets so he likes to trap his victim in a forcefield after shooting at them and boom! Roasted victim
- Vya smacked Vane one time for freezing the ocean
- Vino and Cygnus was the first one to appear before Tino and his family and pretty much chased them through dimensions
- Vole hates cake
- Vai still have the voice in his head even after the staff was broken
I'll probably add more when it comes to mind 🤔

676 Words; Based on this drawing by @mcfanely
“Cole?” Jay stared, disbelieving. Beside him, Nya and Lloyd gasped.
The Skull Sorcerer—Cole—grinned. The skull in his hand quivered, teeth chattering ominously.
“What happened?” Nya asked, cautiously brandishing her weapon. “What have you done with Cole?” Her attention turned towards the floating skull, which glowed the same sinister green as Cole’s eyes.
Jay started as he noticed that detail. Was this really…?
The skull trembled. But it did not speak.
“The son of Lily is no longer here.” Cole said, his voice even. The skull’s teeth continued to chatter.
Lloyd stepped forwards, holding his hands out disarmingly. “Cole, please.” He said softly. “Whatever’s happening, we can talk this out.”
The skull chuckled. Cole turned his gaze to Lloyd.
It’s almost like when he was hypnotized by the Hypnobrai, Jay thought glumly. But Lloyd hadn’t really been there for that, so he probably didn’t realize.
Lloyd said something else, another plea for Cole to maybe stop doing whatever he was doing.
“Enough!” Cole put the mask back on his face, wings appearing behind him. The skull shrieked with laughter.
Jay tensed. Was Cole going to attack?
The skull quivered a bit. “Destroy them.” It said, “Destroy these interlopers.”
Cole nodded, taking to the air and hovering. The ground began to shake at his command.
“Cole!” Lloyd shouted, one last attempt to reach out as Nya started dragging him and Jay away. “Please, Cole, snap out of it! I know you’re in there!”
The skull cackled. “Fools! Idiots! Interlopers! The son of Lily is no more!”
Cole laughed along with it. The tunnel shook violently. “Run, little rats!” He called out, as the tunnel got progressively tighter. “Run, before you’re caught!”
Nya pulled Lloyd out of the way of a sudden stalagmite jutting out of the floor. “We need to get out of here!”
Lloyd pulled his hand away “But Cole—”
“But nothing.” Nya hissed. “Either we get out of here now and come back for Cole later, or we die here and Cole’s lost forever.”
Jay nodded. “Nya’s right, Lloyd.” He swallowed thickly. “We need to get out of here alive if we want to help Cole.”
Lloyd looked back to where Cole was standing, watching their conversation with interest. He turned back to Jay and Nya. “Alright.” He conceded. “But we have to come back.”
“We will.” Jay reassured. He didn’t want to leave Cole either, but there wasn’t a choice. There was no magic flute to snap Cole out of it; they’d have to find another way.
As the trio fled through the tunnels, Jay spared only one backwards glance towards where Cole had been standing.
They’d come back for him.
They had to.
+=+=+=+=+
“You blasted skull.” Cole cursed softly, as the humans fled. “Why can’t I go after them? I could bring this whole mountain down on them and be done with it.”
“Patience, child.” The skull chided, teeth clacking in warning. “And no, you can’t. Not with all this vengestone in the mountains.” Indeed, it had been a struggle just to make the tunnel shake, let alone summon all the stalactites and stalagmites to scare those pesky warriors off.
“Besides,” The skull added, after a few moments’ thought, “They may prove useful, with a few adjustments to our plan…”
“I suppose.” Cole conceded, clearly still frustrated. The wings on his back flexed anxiously.
The skull chattered its teeth as if it were shrugging. It had been lucky to have obtained this boy as a host—those earth powers would prove very useful for its plans, and something about this boy was… pliable, as if his mind was more open to suggestion. A lot more workable than the skull’s previous host, that was for sure.
Cole said something, snapping the skull from its thoughts. “I don’t know.” It responded. “You’ll have to think of something yourself.”
Cole shrugged. “Eh, I’m sure something will come up.”
Yes, the skull decided, this host would be much more useful. It was certainly more amusing, that was for certain.
“Now, maybe we should track down those other two rats…”

819 Words; Skull Sorceress AU
Minor spoilers for season 13 in the mention of small events, but otherwise completely AU.
Cole grumbled as he was led away from the cage containing the other ninja. Well, that escape attempt was a bust.
And the way the Skull Sorcerer had eyed him, when requesting Cole to be brought before them; they’d looked at him like he was… familiar. It didn’t make Cole uneasy, exactly, but he wasn’t sure he liked it.
The skeletons lead him to the Skull Sorcerer’s… lair? Cave? Whatever it was, Cole felt uneasy as he passed between the lavafalls. He had a feeling the Skull Sorcerer wasn’t going to be too kind to him after those three failed escape attempts.
Once in the room—which was decorated similarly to Clouse’s room had been, back on Chen’s island; Cole supposed the “Sorcerer” part of the Skull Sorcerer’s title wasn’t just a fancy word—the skeletons forced Cole to his knees, pushing his head down until he was bowing.
At the sound of the skeletons’ bones rattling, a figure stepped out from behind one of the shelves. Cole tensed.
The Skull Sorcerer.
“Well?” They asked impatiently. “Are you going to let me see his face or not?”
The skeletons released their grip, allowing the Skull Sorcerer to grab Cole’s chin, angling his head upwards. They stared at his face for a long moment, as if trying to memorize every detail.
“It really is…” They said softly, trailing a gentle hand along his features. “Cole…”
Cole froze, panic written across his visage. How did the Skull Sorcerer know his name?
The Skull Sorcerer waved a hand, indicating to the skeletons to leave. Within moments, Cole was alone with them.
Cole didn’t like this. He was alone with an enemy, with no way for the ninja to get to him, no access to his powers. The Skull Sorcerer moved over to help him up, but Cole pushed them away.
“How—” Cole paused, “How do you know my name?”
The Skull Sorcerer moved their hand up to their mask. “Why would I have ever forgotten it?”
“What?”
Hand on their mask, the Skull Sorcerer paused. “Cole.” They took his hands in their own. “Why would a mother ever forget her son’s name?”
Cole flinched. “Wh—” He swallowed hard around the sudden lump in his throat.
The Skull Sorcerer’s mask came off.
Cole’s eyes pricked with tears.
Lily smiled back at him, a soft, tired smile so much like his own. “My son.” She said softly.
Cole felt weak at the knees. “Mom…” He all but sobbed, stepping forwards as if under a trance. “Is it—is it really…?”
Lily surged forwards, enveloping her son in a tight hug. “Oh, Cole. It’s okay, Mommy’s here, Mommy’s here.”
“Mom.” Cole sobbed out, once he could speak past the tears and the tightening of his throat. “I—I thought—”
Lily hushed her son gently, running a hand through his hair. “I know. And I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left you for so long. But I—” She paused, pulling away. She looked at Cole again, as if seeing him for the first time. She put a hand to her mouth. “How—how long have I been gone?”
“Nearly ten years.” Cole said quietly.
Lily gasped. “Oh my—Cole, I—” She came forwards again, reaching out to her son nervously. “I’m so sorry.”
Cole smiled softly. “It’s okay.” He came forwards and hugged her again. “I’m just glad to see you again.” It felt as if something that had been lodged in his chest was loose, as if a missing piece had finally been returned.
Like everything in the world was suddenly right again.
“Oh!” Lily pulled away, clasping her hands excitedly. “There’s so much for us to catch up on!”
Cole laughed. “I was just about to say that!”
“Well, looks like I beat you to it.” Lily gloated, before moving to put her arm around Cole’s shoulders.
Cole frowned. “Mom, do you think you could let my friends come up here? I’d love for you to meet them.”
Lily waved her hand airily, dismissing the suggestion. “Maybe later. I want to hear your story first.” She lead her son over to a small table and some chairs, gesturing for him to sit down. “Now please,” She said eagerly, “Don’t spare any details. How did you end up in Shintaro? Have you met Wu? How’s Lou?”
Cole put his hands up. “Okay, okay, I’ll tell you. But you have to calm down first, Mom.”
Lily nodded. “Tell me everything.”
“Okay, so it started…”
+=+=+=+=+
Jay was nervous. Cole had been dragged away to see the Skull Sorcerer what seemed like forever ago. What could be taking him so long?
“Hey.” Kai put his hand on Jay’s shoulder, “I’m sure Cole’ll be okay. The Skull Sorcer-whatever won’t get the drop on him that easily.”
Jay nodded, face set in a grimace. He cast his glance towards the lavafall through which Cole had disappeared.
“I hope you’re right.” Jay said softly. “I hope you’re right.”

Is Vania with Wu and the upply or something in the skull sorcerer Cole au?
That piece of art isn't necessarily an AU! It could be, but it wasn't initially made with that intention! It was just me, pre-season 13, thinking what it would be like if Cole became the Skull Sorcerer because my mind was fixed on the notion of "What if it's Lilly??"
Alas, I was wrong! But my love for evil characters forced my left hand and we got the art anyway, because I said so
If it was an AU? Man, I'd have to think about the logistics of it!
I think it would follow the plot closely to a point, and then diverge when Cole gets possessed by the Skull, whenever that is! So I'll say yes, Vania, Wu and the Uppily are still present and still a group. Whether Cole is at Rock Bottom with them, I'm not sure - though plot wise it would make more sense
Maybe Cole gets possessed before he can face off against Vangelis with the two blades? I'd have to think!
You've made me think!

Whumptober Day 03: Sticks & stones may break my bones but...
Taunting + Insults
1644 Words; Sleeper Skull AU
TW for verbal degradation
Cole didn’t notice anything wrong when he destroyed the skull.
In fact, the very first hint that something was wrong only occurred when the ninja had finally returned to the monastery, with a promise from the newly-coronated Vania to keep in touch.
And it wasn’t much of a hint, either. Just a sharp feeling that something was off followed by a mild headache that lasted the rest of the night.
It became clear what was happening the next morning.
“Good morning.”
Cole jolted upright, looking around his room frantically. Who had said that?
“Not very bright, are we?” The voice chuckled, and it was then that Cole realized the voice was coming from inside his head.
Cole groaned. “Oh, what now?”
Another chuckle, very clear amusement pulsing through Cole’s head from the source. “Surely you recognize me! I’m only what remains of the skull you used all of your power to destroy.”
Cole froze. That… was probably not good. But he’d destroyed the skull with the spinjitzu burst! He was sure of it!
The skull’s amusement pulsed through his head, alongside what felt like satisfaction? Images—no, Cole realized, memories—followed, impressions of a man casting a spell on himself. A longevity spell.
Cole’s eyes narrowed. That sounded a lot like what Yang had tried to do with the Yin Blade.
Another mental chuckle. “Ah, but you see, the man you’re thinking of was trying to live forever. I merely wanted to live on after death through my own remains.”
Okay. So it was another case of some guy doing stupid things to ensure he wasn’t forgotten. Cole could understand the feeling, but that didn’t mean he’d allow his new mental roommate to stick around.
Getting up out of the bed, Cole moved to get dressed. He’d go to Wu first, who would probably know what to do, or at least be willing to research the subject—and then he’d let the others know the skull had stuck around and might become a problem later.
Cole felt another pulse of amusement, this time tinged with condescension. The skull didn’t speak, exactly, but Cole did get the ideas it was conveying loud and clear.
“I’m not stupid enough to believe that.” He muttered, but… he supposed the skull was making some degree of sense. So he wouldn’t bug the whole team with something so insignificant. Whatever.
Cole knew from experience that Wu was exceptionally good at keeping secrets.
But now Cole could feel uncertainty creeping up in the back of his mind. They had only just returned home from Shintaro. Would it really be fair to spring this on them so soon?
And it wasn’t like the skull was actually a problem. Annoying, definitely, but clearly in no position to do anything now.
Cole fiddled with his shirt uncertainly. “Still… I probably should tell them…”
He wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince himself or not.
The skull scoffed. “Oh, go right ahead. Tell them all about how you failed to destroy me the first time. I’m sure they won’t mind.” The skull’s tone was arrogant. Cole wanted to punch it.
But… it had a point.
Cole sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Yeah, it wouldn’t be fair to dump his problems on everything else like that. And how would he even approach the issue, anyway? It’s not like he could just go up and tell them “you know that magic skull Vangelis was using to power himself? Yeah, it’s in my head now criticizing the way I dress.” They’d look at him like he’d taken a hit to the head.
It’s not like the skull was a problem. Having someone else in his head wasn't the end of the world.
Cole would just… wait a little bit to tell the others. But he definitely would, once enough time passed.
Yeah.
+=+=+=+=+
Cole realized he’d probably made a mistake once a few weeks had passed.
Too much time had passed. Now it would just be awkward.
But the skull—Marcellus, that was his name—still wasn’t a problem, so Cole just left it alone.
It was fine. Really, it was.
Cole probably should have known better.
+=+=+=+=+
Maercellus’ taunts got worse.
It didn’t matter what Cole was doing or saying or even just thinking; the necromancer had a snide remark for everything. Training (“You call that a kick? What are you, ten?”), playing video games (“Oops! Another life gone! You sure are bad at this, aren’t you?”), painting (“That doesn’t even look like a bird!”), running errands (“You’re going to forget the milk. Again~.”)—Cole couldn’t get a moment’s peace no matter what he was doing.
Benefits of a mental roommate, Cole supposed, bitter taste in his throat. But honestly? He’d faced much worse criticisms before.
He’d practically been raised in the performing arts industry, after all.
So as frustrated as Cole was, he wasn’t any more agitated than when he was at Marty Oppenheimer’s. Therefore, as annoying as they were, Marcellus’ jabs barely qualified as a problem.
Besides, Cole was a ninja. He had bigger problems to worry about. He wasn’t about to be humbled by something so insignificant.
At least, that’s what he kept telling himself.
+=+=+=+=+
Cole awoke to tears streaming down his face.
That… had not been a pleasant dream.
Sitting up, Cole wiped at his eyes with his arm, trying to forget the nightmare.
Marcellus, the little bitch he was proving to be, responded to this by replaying bits of the nightmare like a highlight reel, vague interest and amusement flickering through Cole’s mind.
“What an interesting dream.” Marcellus replayed the bit where Cole fell, and Cole curled in on himself at the memory of it. “You really do have a history with falling. And nobody ever bothers to try and catch you, either.”
“They—” Cole started, swallowing. “It’s not like—” He snorted. “It’s not like they could have caught me. Besides,” he added, before Marcellus could get a snide remark in, “I can handle myself. I’ve done plenty of rock climbing. A fall isn’t going to take me out.”
Some small part of Cole disagreed with that statement, but he ignored that part.
“Ah, but you don’t actually believe any of that, do you?” Marcellus taunted, self-satisfied with his little deduction.
Cole cringed. “Of course I do.” He said, voice softer than he intended. “I can handle myself.”
He wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince.
Marcellus snorted. “Are you really that unsure of yourself? And to think, you defeated Vangelis. I guess that says more about how weak that man truly was.” There was a bitter edge to the sorcerer’s words, disgust and condescension all wrapped into a pretty little mental package.
Cole huffed, flopping back down onto the bed. “Oh, shut up”.
“Why? I’m just stating the truth. It’s not my fault if you’re pathetic enough to feel threatened by it.”
“Just stop, okay?” Cole sighed, brushing his hand through his hair. “I don’t need your bitching on top of everything else happening right now.”
Marcellus hmmed. “Sounds boring.”
Cole groaned, rolling over onto his stomach and burying his face in the pillow. He just wanted some rest, dammit.
Despite his efforts, sleep didn’t come.
+=+=+=+=+
Cole could really do without Marcellus’ snark in the middle of a battle. But he wasn’t that lucky, so he just did his best to ignore the necromancer’s jabs.
But then he slipped up and gave his opponent an opening—Marcellus hadn’t been distracting him that time. That mistake was all him.
The sorcerer laughed, schadenfreude filling his words. “Oh, look at that. Another Cole Mistake.”
Cole flinched, the movement allowing his opponent to get a solid hit in. That stung a lot more than it should have.
He still hadn’t quite recovered by that point, so his opponent took the opportunity to kick Cole while he was down.
Cole gasped at the pain. Oh, that was definitely going to bruise.
Before he could recover and counterattack, though, Kai intervened, saving Cole from making anymore stupid mistakes.
“Dude, is something wrong?” Kai asked, as Cole finally recovered enough to engage another opponent. “It’s not like you to be so unsteady.”
Unsteady. Cole bristled, then clamped down on his first reaction. “I’m fine.” He punched his current opponent harder than he needed to. “Just distracted.” His jaw was set, shoulders tensed, which did not make fighting any easier.
Out of the corner of his eye, Cole saw Kai give him a look. “Then undistract yourself.” Kai snapped, deflecting what would have been a nasty hit. “Save it for after the battle.”
Cole nodded, not trusting himself to say anything more.
Marcellus remained quiet for the rest of the battle.
Cole didn’t fuck up again.
He didn’t do very well, either.
+=+=+=+=+
They got back to the monastery later that night.
Cole slipped away into his room with a half-mumbled “‘m tired” before any of them could question his performance.
Jay had come by his door earlier, trying to convince Cole to open it, or at least open up and talk about whatever was bothering him. But Cole had pretended to be asleep, and eventually, Jay gave up and retired to his own bed for the night.
Cole was laying on his bed, lights off, staring up at the ceiling. It felt like his head was full of static. His throat felt tight. His eyes were dry.
Marcellus was quiet, leaving Cole to his thoughts.
Not that Cole needed Marcellus to criticize him when he could pick himself apart just fine.
It was stupid. Cole was being stupid. He was better than this, dammit, so why did it feel like he was falling apart?
He was stronger than this. It was just a rough patch. He had to be better than this, and he would be.
Right?
Cole grumbled, covering his face with his hands.
Marcellus was right.
“I am pathetic.”
