Tried to ride my YT EDecoy up to the glacier but ran out of battery 90% of the way there. Didn’t run out of views that’s for sure. This liquid glacier was streaming by. Post up a guess on how long it would take for the water to make it to the valley. #thisplaceisawesome #whistler #whistlerblackcomb #mtb #ebike #ytindustries #realtor #evrealestate #newhome #mountaintown #skitown #mountains #scenic (at Whistler, Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTvaJd3JA3p/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 12: Say Cold Cheese! To Switzerland We Go!
This morning, we woke up pretty early to take one of the earlier trains to Brig, Switzerland in order to make the most of the travel day. After cleaning up and checking out of the AirBnB, we ran off to the Milan train station so that we could purchase last-minute tickets for the Milan-Brig train. At first, because we couldn’t purchase last minute online tickets for this morning’s departure time, we thought we had made a huge mistake not purchasing tickets in advance. But all ended well when we bought our tickets for the right price at the train station and boarded the train without issue.
The views on the train ride from Milan to Brig were scenic, and as we inched our way closer to the Italy-Switzerland border, we started to see the famous Swiss Alps come into view. After a couple of hours, we arrived in Brig. Because Cynthia needed to find a SIM card for Switzerland, we used our layover in Brig as the stop to do so. After we figured out what train we needed to take to Zermatt, Cynthia ran off to find her SIM card while I was left to keep an eye on all of the bags. Luckily, I found a nice place to sit and enjoy views of the street market in Brig. It took a while but Cynthia eventually returned with her SIM card. With some time before our train arrived, it was my turn to look around and I took a quick stroll through the street market before meeting up and heading over to the Brig station with Cynthia.
The Brig-Visp was a regional train and the Visp-Zermatt train was a panoramic train, one that went a lot slower than the others that we had taken. But the reason it was slower was because it was also a scenic train, one that took us through the mountains on our way to Zermatt. It was a pretty ride, and it was nice to just sit there and watch all the scenery as we zoomed by.
Once we arrived in Zermatt, we dropped off our bags at our hotel, Hotel Alpina (since we couldn’t check in yet), and walked around the cute little ski town in search of food. And it took a while to find an affordable place to dine at. After being in more-affordable Italy for the last 10 days or so, we were expecting expensive prices in Switzerland. But we weren’t expecting these ridiculous prices! EVERYTHING WAS SO FREAKIN’ EXPENSIVE! And it took us so long to find food because nothing was worth the price tag that restaurants were asking for. UGH. We eventually settled on Pizzeria Ristorante Molino Zermatt because it had cheaper food items than most of the other places we could find (except McDonald’s of course). We ordered a pretty good pizza that we shared and then returned to the hotel to check into our room.
Our room was a nice, mountain cabin-like room. Though small, it was comfy and had a nice wilderness vibe to it. We hung out in our room for a bit as we planned what we wanted to do over the next couple of days in the area. Before long, we left to check out town with the little daylight we had left. We stopped by the grocery store for grapes and stopped by some other places to get some of our Zermatt travel questions answered. It wasn’t long until the skies started to get darker. Because sunset was right around the corner, Cynthia and I rushed up to the rather high Zermatt viewpoint and photo spot at the upper end of town. It took quite a lot of energy to hike up to the point but we eventually made it in time for a very uninspiring and dull sunset. No clouds, no nothing. Just a backlit Matterhorn and the dark town underneath it. Meh.
We stayed up there for photos until the sun had vanished and the town lights started to turn on. It was getting pretty cold by this point so we rushed back down to the main street to find a cheap place for dinner. Again, it took a while to find a good option but we eventually found a pub called Brown Cow Pub, located just past our hotel along the main street, where we sat in for some cheap-ish bar food. We had their subpar cheeseburger with fries and the Toast Matterhorn, a thick piece of oily and heavy toast with ham, onions, mushrooms, and melted cheese. Like sunset, it was an uninspiring way to end the day. But I guess it did the trick without completely robbing us of a big chunk of our travel money.
5 Things I Learned/Observed Today:
1. You cannot buy last minute tickets for trains online because there is likely a cutoff time to do so. If you are hoping to buy a ticket at the very last minute for flexibility purposes, the train station kiosks are the way to go. As long as there are seats left, it’s probably possible to buy last minute tickets at the train station. Also, buying at the train station sometimes saves you some money because you don’t have to pay any fees that you would normally have to pay for online tickets.
2. Most, if not all, train routes from Milan to Zermatt take you through either Visp or Brig as the first Switzerland pit stop. Your layover destination where you can buy tickets to Zermatt depends on what you need from a layover. If you layover in Brig, the town is bigger than Visp so you have more options for stores and stuff. But if you make a stop in Brig, you still have to stop in Visp. So if you don’t really need anything, just train to Visp to save yourself a stop.
3. Zermatt is really really expensive. Like... really crazy expensive.
4. All these restaurants in Zermatt charge for water! Water should be free and should be a right for all travelers! Especially in the mountains where there’s plenty of good clean water…
5. A chalet is a type of building or house typical of the alpine region of Europe and usually constructed of wood and wide, gently-sloping roofs. That type of building is pretty prevalent here in Switzerland.
