It's About Time
Mio dio! While I’ve always enjoyed the idea of cooking, it was not something that has come up often enough for me to really get into it for a long period of time. There was those couple of days when the parents were out and I had to try and rustle up some food for me and the bro. There was university, when I tried to get into making myself food everyday, but ended up getting fed up with the limited fridge space and having to fight to use the stove. Of course who can forget rolling home at three in the morning and making some instant noodles with peanuts.
This new year has offered me the chance to show what I am made of in the kitchen. Through a combination of bad luck and extended hangover, the main chef in the household has temporarily lost the ability to provide the nutrients. It is now up to the sous-chef to step forward and carry the team, gastronomically speaking. In addition to having to make fairly bland, digestively simple meals, there has also been opportunity to experiment with producing meals that I have not done before.
While the entire process of cooking takes me roughly 2 hours, from preparation of the ingredients to the lifting up of utensils and salivating of mouth(s?), it never feels that long. Apart from the mild discomfort I get from bending my head down to check the situation of the food, joy is what I feel. Not just due to the fact that it allows me to cast out the stresses of the day, but also because I get to look forward to the tasting segment of the process. The sense of satisfaction felt, through the accomplishment of culinary delight from my other half, is on par with setting a new high score on Candy Crush Saga*, I’ve improved and I am happy but next time I want to do better. Because of course, this is the entirely why cooking brings enjoyment to many people. And in my case, it is never more relevant.
I have never been picky about what substances I consume. Nor am I adverse to consume the same food for an extended period of time. Case in point, I have done full months of McDonald’s meals everyday without any negative reactions. My weight did not even explode, due to daily rounds of calisthenics. In fact, I would probably say that I was actually in the best shape of my life, full 4 pack showing (lower abs are too hard). All this adds up to is a low standard of food when dining alone. Cutting corners in different ways was a staple of my nourishment formation. But with changes in family makeup, it means that narcissistic food management is no longer an option.
Chinese cuisine has been the staple recently. A weak stomach should only really handle what it is familiar with, but in the coming weeks I plan to test out the capabilities of both my skills in the kitchen and the gastronomical organs we contain within our bodies.
