LGBT book recommendations

Because it’s Pride Month, and because @jesse11441 asked for it and I couldn’t be bothered typing all this out over text.

(this is going to be a long post so recommendations are under the Read More)

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Becky Albertalli) This is the book that inspired the movie Love, Simon; it’s about a gay boy and his experience with first love, coming out and life in general. [TW- being outed]

Leah on the Offbeat (Becky Albertalli) Leah on the Offbeat is the sequel to Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, so please read that first if you don’t want spoilers! Follows a bisexual main character and her general experience. [TW- covers the topic of racism (challenged), biphobia, anti-fat remarks]

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (Becky Chambers) Follows a crew of various different characters from all sorts of alien backgrounds. It’s kinda queer, I guess? Idk, read it and you’ll understand.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Emily M Danforth) Set in 1989, it follows the story of a young, closeted lesbian in small-town Montana who is then sent to conversion therapy. [TW- homophobic language/experiences, conversion therapy, drug use/underage drinking type thing, self-harm; it just generally deals with a lot of heavy topics]

Ask the Passengers (AS King) About a girl who’s trying to break free from the labels others place on her (she’s fallen in love with a girl, but isn’t sure if she’s really a lesbian.) She has to deal with pressure from family and friends to come out- whether that is saying she is a lesbian or that she isn’t- and would much rather just be. [TW- homophobia]

We Are Okay (Nina LaCour) An amazing book with lots of character development about a girl moving on from the death of her grandfather. [TW- depression, grief, loss of family members]

Everything Leads to You (Nina LaCour) A girlxgirl love story with elements of film.

Every Day (David Levithan) A wakes up in a different body every day, but they fall in love with one girl and will do anything to stay with her.

Gena/Finn (Hannah Moskowitz and Kat Helgeson) A story told entirely in emails, comments, notes, drawings and other media of two girls falling in love (though that’s not all it’s about.)

Radio Silence (Alice Oseman) Great LGBT representation that isn’t directly about being LGBT- about a boy, a girl, another boy and a podcast (the podcast is not unlike Welcome to Night Vale.)

I Was Born for This (Alice Oseman) About a fangirl and a band, of which the lead singer/frontman of the band is a trans boy (also the fangirl is a Muslim girl.)

Carry On (Rainbow Rowell) Essentially a parody of the ‘chosen one’ trope, in which the main character is gay. Somewhat similar to Harry Potter.

History is All You Left Me (Adam Silvera) A very sad story about a boy recovering from an ex-boyfriend’s death.

They Both Die at the End (Adam Silvera) Another sad story about two boys who will die within the next twenty-four hours, and their attempts to experience as much as they can before they die.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Benjamin Alire Saenz) Two boys and a friendship of a lifetime.

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life (Benjamin Alire Saenz) A coming of age novel about a boy who was adopted by a gay man and his general experiences with life and the death of family members.

Queens of Geek (Jen Wilde) Set at a convention, this book has bisexual rep, POC rep, anxiety rep and autism rep. Also a great story in general.

Spinning (Tilly Walden) A memoir in graphic novel form about an ex-figure skater and her life (also she’s gay).

If I Was Your Girl (Meredith Russo) A trans girl dealing with life after transition.

Symptoms of Being Human (Jeff Garvin) Follows the story of Riley, who is genderfluid, and their experiences with life.

Seven Ways We Lie (Riley Redgate) This isn’t really about being LGBT, more about a school scandal, but one of the main characters is pansexual and does actually say this directly in the book!

Dreadnought (April Daniels) A trans girl becomes a superhero and has to deal with big-time villains but also peoples’ reactions to her trans identity.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson (John Green and David Levithan) Two boys with the same name meet, and their lives become intertwined in many ways.

More Happy than Not (Adam Silvera) Another sad story about a boy trying to find happiness after his father’s suicide (also, he’s gay.)

Autoboyography (Christina Lauren) Two boys fall in love in a writing class- one is bisexual and from an accepting family, while the other comes from a super-religious, conservative family.

The Upside of Unrequited (Becky Albertalli) Molly has never been in an actual relationship, but she’s had many crushes in her time. (LGBT rep in this book is Molly’s mums, her twin sister and her sister’s girlfriend, who is pansexual.)

We Are the Ants (Shaun David Hutchinson) A boy is abducted by aliens and given the opportunity to prevent the world from ending by pressing a button. Issue is, he’s not 100% sure he actually wants to save the world from destruction.

The Flywheel/Get It Together, Delilah! (Erin Gough) Delilah’s father has gone overseas and she now has to deal with saving the family, keeping her best friend Charlie out of prison and maybe getting a date with Rosa, the beautiful flamenco dancer from across the road.

Amelia Westlake (Erin Gough) Two girls create a secret identity in order to get things to change around their super-religious private high school.

Finding Nevo (Nevo Zisin) An autobiography of Nevo Zisin, a queer, non-binary human. It’s a great book.

Bonus: This webcomic called Heartstopper by Alice Oseman, which is largely a fluffy story about two boys falling in love [TW- eating disorders.]

5 Stylish Ways To Wear The Fleece Trend

Since when has fleece been cool? Like many of the current trends permeating fashion (ugly trainers spring to mind), you probably wouldn’t have been seen dead wearing fleece just a few years ago. Now, it’s everywhere.

Once reserved for hikers, bird watchers and teachers on school trips, fleece is today just as likely to be seen on streetwear kids as it is in the après-ski lodge. Naturally, it’s incredibly warm and works as a layering piece come winter. Oh, and it’s possible for it to look good too.

What Is Fleece?

The greatest appeal of fleece has always been its warmth, despite being incredibly light in weight. An entirely man-made fabric, it’s derived from plastic – polyester fibres are woven tightly together and then brushed to create a pile-like surface. Not only does this give it a soft, textured feel, it also helps with fleece’s heat-retention and moisture-resistance – air pockets are trapped between the fibres meaning the heat generated by your body stays put.

Urban Outfitters

This is why fleece has always been popular in the great outdoors. In fact, that trusty American wilderness brand that everyone’s now wearing, Patagonia, was behind the creation of fleece back in the 80s. The idea was to improve on wool – nature’s best, sure, but often itchy and incredibly heavy when wet.

Patagonia’s fleece, dubbed Synchilla, was an immediate hit and would become sustainable in 1993, when the brand started producing it out of plastic bottles. (It’s worth noting that not all fleece is made from recycled materials though – some require the use of raw petroleum and arguably all release micro-plastics when washed, which can ultimately end up in the world’s oceans.)

How To Wear Fleece

Fleece has seen a sharp incline in popularity, but why are people flocking to it? Much of its current appeal can be attributed to the nineties revival and the general feeling of nostalgia surrounding it. Light-wash jeans, chunky trainers, colour-blocked anoraks and fleece – they’ve all had big years and they all stem from that decade.

Uniqlo

It’s fleece’s compatibility with a wide range of outfits that appeals most today though. Yes, it was born on the walking trail, but it’s also at home on the street. Olie Arnold, Mr Porter style director hints at its versatility: “Fleece jackets are perfectly suited to the current outerwear trend and are easily incorporated into a streetwear look alongside tapered cargo trousers and hiking boots. Alternatively, layer your fleece over a winter-weight shirt with your favourite pair of slim-fit jeans or chinos for a relaxed weekend look.”

To understand just how far fleece has come, head to Savile Row. Brands such as Gieves & Hawkes, tailors famous for their bespoke suits, are now proprietors of the furry style, too. “The idea came from the commuters on my train really,” says Gieves brand creative director John Harrison. “The fleece was worn with a formal trouser and shirt, but no jacket. I thought a GH fleece would be a great intermediate item. It can be dressed up a bit but mainly it is a warm layer, on its own or under a lighter coat.”

Colour Blocking

A fleece jacket is a great way of injecting a playful dash of colour into a look. There are many pattered examples available but our favourites adopt a ski-inspired look with colour blocking. Look for fleece panels in contrasting shades – blue and red is a good shout – and pair with neutral chinos or pale jeans and Converse for an easy off-duty look.

Oversize Layering

Oversized silhouettes are dominating outerwear offerings at the moment, and fleece jackets are no exception. Look for something collared – an overshirt, perhaps – and layer over a hoodie. You’ll get all the warmth of a larger coat yet no bulk – perfect for transitional weather. For ultimate comfort go for tapered joggers and a pair of runners down below.

As A Vest

When a full jacket is too much a fleece vest is a good option. You’ll get all the fibre’s warmth on your mid-section but with added freedom of movement in the arms – think of it as a more playful take on the down gilet, which can make you look like an off-duty hedge funder.

One of the easiest ways of wearing fleece is as part of a minimal look. Pick a jacket in an inoffensive colour jacket and give it room to breathe by pairing it with simple pieces such as a white tee and navy chinos. Go for a classic zip-up pullover and let the fleece fabric work its magic in the cold.

With its voluminous proportions and tactile finish, fleece is arguably at its best when it’s a statement piece. The fabric is naturally a little showy, reminiscent as it is of sheepskin or fur, so embrace it. Wear with equally robust staples such as corduroy trousers, a roll neck and white trainers and you’ll be onto a winner.

i just majorly scrolled through your blog and read "Project". you asked if you should continue it and i just want to say YES.

Note: This is a sequel to Project which I recommend reading it before this one to get an ideas of what they went through together.

- John

I read out the message to Maria - a friend of mine since we were in diapers, my older sister. She turned around to face the mirror on my bedroom wall. She adjusted her wine coloured skater dress, dressing it with her usual pearl necklace, giving her a Veronica Lodge look. The plum lipstick complimented her dark features and gave her a sly vibe as a smirk played across her face.

“Should I go for it?” I asked.

“I would lead him on.” She played with her long curls.

“But I’m not you.” I muttered, looking down at my phone.

“Yeah, you are the goody two shoes sister of mine.” I smiled at her comment.

“Out of all of his friends, he is probably the nicest. Go for it. If he tries anything,”

“You’ll kick his ass.” I smiled, finishing her sentence.

“Damn right I will.” I typed on my phone before sending off the text.

Pick me up at my locker after classes - Y/n

I walked from my history class, down the hall and over to my locker. To my own surprise, John was waiting there, alone.

“Didn’t bring the bunch with you today?” I asked as he looked up at me with his usual smile.

“Of course not.” He leaned against the neighbouring locker to mine as I twisted in my lock combination. I opened the door, and put away my binder, taking a few of my note books that I would need to complete my homework. When I closed my locker, I zipped up my backpack and looked over at the boy. “Ready?” He asked me.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I smiled as he draped his arm around my shoulders.

We made our way uptown to a local coffee shop, the one that we first hung out at. That day was three months ago. Ever since we had been going steady and it worked. The hardest part to it was the social stance. I was the quiet loner who had her nose in her text books. John was quite social as he was in the most social clique in the school. I have to admit, I did feel very out of place when we first started dating, but it made me come out of my shell. But the comfort of it was when he would hold my hand under the table. I would know he was there if I began to feel anxious. The warm smell of coffee and pastries filled my nose as we got in line to order. I chose my drink of choice with a bagel. John ordered right after me. But right as I was about to pull out my wallet, John stopped me by paying before I could.

“John.” I spoke as we walked over to a table, sitting down in the booth.

“Yes, Y/n.” He smiled cheekily.

“I’m capable of paying for myself.” I explained.

“But how am I supposed to be a gentleman if I can’t pay for the lady.” He winked at me, causing my cheeks to heat up to a rosy pink. “You know you are cute, right?”

“John.” I hid my face in my hands, trying to cool my face off. He stood up from his booth and walked over to mine, sliding in. He pushed my hands away from my face with a soft smile, one that I have never seen on him before. I looked into is hazel brown eyes with a soft look. I don’t know where this boost of confidence came from, but I leaned forward, cupping his jaw with my hands and pressed his lips to mine. His hands found their way to the back of my neck, and one on my hip, holding me closer. He pressed his lips against mine again, and again, and again. When we pulled apart, we took a deep breath in of air.

“Two coffees, a bagel, and a muffin?” The waitress walked over, causing John and I to pull away. I gave her a small nod as she placed the warm, fresh baked goods in front of us in the booth. We had just had our first kiss. Wow. That was just…wow. I was speechless. The warm feeling didn’t go away as I took bites into my bagel and sipped on my coffee.

I took in the sights of the city as the sun had set a couple of hours ago. We were walking through the park. He draped an arm around my shoulders as we sat on a grass hill, under a street lamp. We looked out onto New York City from where we were. I smiled as I leaned into him, feeling the warmth from his body, the musk from his clothing. He kissed the crown of my head before standing up.

“Let’s dance.” He said, reaching a hand out to me with his usual boyish grin.

“John, I suck at dancing.” I laughed. “Plus there is no music.”

“We don’t need music to dance, Y/n.” He tried, trying to give puppy-dog eyes. “Plus I suck at dancing, too.”

“Fine.” I gave in. “Just this once.” I promised as I placed my hand in his. He pulled me up to my feet and we walked over to the pavement. He kept his one hand in mine and his other fell at my waist. I rested my hand on his shoulder as he pulled me in close to him. We swayed and made the steps up as we went, John taking the lead. “You lied to me.” I told him bluntly. He brows furrowed slightly, confused by what I meant.

“What?” He asked.

“You said you suck at dancing.” I laughed. “You’re amazing, basically a pro.”

“I’ve taken ballroom since I was six.” He spoke in a serious tone.

“No way.” My smile had never been brighter.

“I’m kidding.” He laughed. Our steps slowed down to almost nothing, but we held onto each other. “I think I’m in love with you Y/n L/n.” John muttered.

“I think I’m in love with you, too, John Laurens.”

“Then will you allow me to do the honours of walking you home?” John asked. “I want your parents to like me, so I should get you home before curfew.”

“I would love for you to walk me home.” I smiled as he let go of my waist. The area where his hand once was tingled in loss, missing the warmth. But his left hand remained in my right one.

“And here we are.” John smiled as we walked up the front porch of my family home. I sighed knowing that I would have to say goodbye to him.

“Here we are.” I nodded sadly. “I had a good night, a really good night.”

“I’m glad, because I felt the exact same way.” He smiled. “Maybe next time I can take you dancing, for real.”

“Don’t push it.” I giggled, tucking a strand of my h/c hair behind my ear.

“So I’ll see you tomorrow?” He asked.

“You bet.” I nodded. He leaned forward, cupped my jaw and pressed his soft lips onto mine. And just like that, it was over.

“Goodnight, Y/n.” He muttered against my lips.

“Goodnight, John.” He stepped away and made his way down my driveway. I opened the door and closed it behind me.

“So how did it go?” Maria asked, a smirk on her lips. “It was amazing.” I nodded, a flush making its way to my cheeks. “Did you two kiss?” She asked.

“In a booth at the cafe.” I smiled at the thought, looking down at my feet.

“What else did you do?”

“We walked through the park and looked at the city lights. Then we danced without music, and he walked me home and kissed me goodnight.” I twiddled with the hem of my jacket.

“Man, you have it deep.” She smiled kindly at me.

“I really do.” I looked up at my sister with a small nod.

High School Hockey Team- Lams

Alexander Hamilton plays for the revolutionaries rep hockey team, and is assistant captain. He’s surprisingly not a rough player, but often mouths off to the refs, resulting in him often sitting in the penalty box. Plays center forward.

George Washington is coach of the revolutionaries, and is Alex’s step dad, but doesn’t treat him any different from the other players. Gets mad when Alex yells at the refs, and when the defense does nothing.

Lafayette is the other assistant captain of the revolutionaries, and has to wear a bandana to keep his hair tamed under his helmet during games. He skates with finesse and has excellent stick-handling skills. Plays right wing.

Hercules Mulligan is the goalie for the revolutionaries, and is like a brick wall. Most of the team’s games are shut outs because he barely lets a puck through.

Angelica Schuyler is the team captain for the revolutionaries, and is the all-time point leader for the entire league. She played girls hockey with her sister for some time, but University scouts would be looking for players this year, so she tried out for the boys league, and made it. Washington was so impressed by her skills, he made her captain. She plays left wing.

Charles Lee is talented enough to be on the revolutionaries, but despises the coaching style. He had wanted to be captain for his grade twelve year and was extremely upset when he found out the title went to a girl. He often starts fights on the ice, and spends as much time in the penalty box as Hamilton. Plays defense.

John Laurens uses hockey as a safe way to let out his pent-up anger, and he too often engages in fights on the ice. He had only moved from South Carolina this year, so he knew nobody, and the only hockey team that had an open spot were the loyalists, the revolutionaries rival team. He plays right wing.

Samuel Seabury is captain of the loyalists, but is a terrible skater. The only reason he made the team and was awarded his position of captain was because he sucks up to the coach.

George King is the loyalist’s coach, and couldn’t care less about his team. He makes no effort to coach, yet gets angry when his team loses.

On the first revolutionaries versus loyalists game of the season, Hamilton is in the penalty box within the first ten minutes. He doesn’t hear the remark that Lee made about Angelica, a comment about her inability to play because she was a girl. John did hear, and was outraged at blatant sexism towards someone on your own team, so he punched Lee in the face. This got him a seat in the penalty box.

John looks at the boy who sits on the other side of the glass, and his breath is taken away. He makes a mental note to try and talk to this guy after the game.
