I've been rediscovering my love for Clive Barker this week due to finally managing to see The Ultimate Cabal Cut of Nightbreed (some kind soul has uploaded it to YouTube) and then re-reading Cabal, the book it was based on.
Cabal is amongst my favourite books ever written (though as a bibliophile that list is extremely long!) and one of my favourite movies. I originally saw it in the early 90s when I was probably far too young, and read the book not long after.
I backed the Occupy Midian campaign in 2012 when the lost footage was being searched for and reintegrated into the movie, and I attended a screening of one of the early edits where I met Nicholas Vince and Simon Bamford (Kinski and Ohnaka in Nightbreed, but better known as two of the Cenobites from Hellraiser). This led to the eventual DVD/Blu-ray release of The Directors Cut (which I got a physical copy of) and then The Ultimate Cabal Cut (which I didn’t, and which I haven't seen until now).
It's an oversimplification to call Barker's work horror, especially in Cabal/Nightbreed - this was the mistake the production company made when originally editing and marketing it.
Clive Barker's vision shows us the beauty of the weird, the macabre, the abnormal, and the supernatural, and the true horror in his work comes from the "normal".
In Cabal/Nightbreed his monsters are not evil, they're simply different - undead, mutants and supernatural beings, a metaphor for anyone who has ever felt othered by society. Midian is a place where they can live safely with no fear or judgement. The evil characters are "naturals", humans who hate and fear the monsters for being different even though they pose no threat, and ultimately try to destroy them.
As a member of the LGBT community it's easy to see where Barker's motivation for this metaphor came from, but it could equally apply to just about anyone who feels like they don't fit in. Certainly as a lonely, bullied, weird child when I first read/saw it, who then grew up into a reasonably weird adult, I'd love for the monsters to come and take me away to Midian.
Anyone seeing this who isn't familiar with the book/movie, I'd urge you to look them up, as well as others by Barker. More of my favourites by him are Imajica, Abarat and of course The Hellbound Heart, filmed as Hellraiser. The Forbidden from short story anthology The Books of Blood was also filmed as Candyman.
Below I've linked The Cabal Cut of Nightbreed. Even if you know and love the original theatrical release I'd still urge you to watch this (quick as you can in case its removed due to copyright!).
In addition to doubling the movie length from 1 hour 40 mins to 3 hours 20 mins, a number of the actors voices have been re-recorded as they were overdubbed in the theatrical version for some reason, notably those of Rachel, and Lylesberg, played by Doug Bradley. It was a crime to remove that man's beautiful voice and wonderful to hear it back where its meant to be.
Also, rather than being a standard horror movie heroine who seems to be there only to scream and be rescued, in this version Lori comes across as much stronger and more well-rounded character.
As it says in the opening text, although much of the footage was of good quality there are some sections where all they had available were degraded VHS tapes, some of which were without audio. This means the editing is also a little clunky in places. However the makers of this version wanted to include everything they possibly could in order to bring it in line with the original shooting script and Clive Barker's epic vision for the piece.

The Hellraiser legends! https://www.instagram.com/p/C42-muHLDhZ/ For those not familiar with Hellraiser (or familiar with it, but don't know, who those guys are and why they are in my blog) - that be : Pinhead, Kirsty, female cenobite, Chatterer, Butterball and the guy, who imagined the plot. Source of my inspiration in one image. I visit IG very rarely, and it is always a treat to find one of those posts. :)

Ok on the subject of Hynden Walch being amazing can we talk about AT’s voice cast? I feel like it doesnt get talked about nearly as much as it should.
Jeremy Shada is amazing for how he can escalate his voice for wacky moments or deescalate his voice for quieter, more thoughtful moments. Finn would not be the same character if it werent for Shada’s perfect vocal balance.
John Dimaggio, like what really needs to be said here? He’s BENDER! Of course he was amazing as Jake!
Hynden Walch was never really a voice I considered when thinking about how amazing AT’s voice cast was up until now, I really just remembered her because “hey thats Starfire!” But after hearing her performance as the Candy Queen I FEEL SO STUPID.
Olivia Olson…I wish I had something more constructive to say about Olsen’s voicework but I think everyone’s already well aware about how AMAZING she is as Marceline. Her voice is just so perfect for the character, being both good at delivering quips and devastating tearjerkers. And thats not even mentioning her having the single best singing voice to ever grace a western animated cartoon (yeah fuck you Alvin). Just like Jeremy Shada with Finn, I could not imagine Marceline without Olivia Olson.
Tom Kenny seems like he would be another Joe Dimaggio situation where hes one of the most amazing voice actors of the generation and thats all there is to say. But I think what makes Tom Kenny’s performance as Ice King AND ESPECIALLY SIMON so especially amazing is that…ITS TOM KENNY. THIS IS THE GUY WHO VOICES SPONGEBOB, AND HE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VOUCE OF ONE OF THE MOST HEARTBREAKINGLY TRAGIC CHARACTERS IN ALL OF FICTION, AND HE DOES IT PERFECTLY. THE REVEAL IN HOLLY JOLLY SECRETS, THE CHEERS SCENE FROM SIMON AND MARCY, THE ENDING OF I REMEMBER YOU, ALL DONE BY THE SAME GUY WHO THOUGHT OF SOMETHING FUNNIER THAN 24*! THIS MAN IS A TREASURE.
Niki Yang, look, I know I already said that no one could play Marceline or Finn as well as Olson and Shada…BUT NO ONE, AND I MEAN, NO, ONE, COULD PLAY BMO AS WELL AS NIKI YANG. She brings a perfect tone of childlike wonder, curiosity and innocence into every word spoken by the little robot. She brings such a fun and vibrant energy to the little guy in episodes like “5 short graybles” or “BMO noire,” that just makes it hit all the harder when moments of existentialism pop up in episodes like “The More you Moe” or…well…”BMO.” BMO has one of the most interesting growing up stories in a series where every pretty much every character’s stories are about growing up, and a lot of that is owed to how perfectly delivered his lines are by Yang.
But theres one voice that gets overlooked more than most others, and who deserves way more credit than they get for how important they are to the show. Someone who’s been around since the very first episode and has been continually providing voices for the series even now in Fionna and Cake. A voice actress whos so commited to the show that its easier to count the episodes she ISNT in than the ones she is in. MARIA. BAMFORD. Margaret, Hot Dog Princess, Slime Princess, Ghost Princess, Melissa, Raggedy Princess, Manfried, Wildberry Princess, Undead Princess, The Butterfly with a Gun AND AN ABSOLUTELY GINORMOUS AMOUNT OF EXTRA VOICES. She puts so much of her signature hilarious vocal range into every one of the dozens if not HUNDREDS of characters that she plays throughout the series. Also a lot of you probably don’t know this but she does standup comedy and she’s hilarious and you should all listen to her albums because she also does funny voices in that and you can even sometimes identify a voice she used for a character in the show…but also trigger warning for mental illness and suicide she talks about those kind of a lot. But anyway my point is, Maria Bamford is a huge reason as to why Adventure Time is as wonderful as it is. Her wacky voices contribute so much to the weird and wonderful vibe of the show, and even if she doesn’t play any primary characters, she is one of the most important and under appreciated voices in the entire series.

If you ever watch the movie *A bugs life* I can’t help but headcanon Lich’s voice as Hopper cuz he’s a bully and a boss man.😅 especially the last scene where the ants finally are fed up with him and face him for being a tyrant that he is.
That's awesome you have a voice you can hear for Lich. I haven't watched a Bugs Life in a long time, but I liked the movie as a little kid. I can see the parallels with the characters.
Originally, when I first came up with the concept of Lich's character (Can’t even remember what I originally named him. Maybe it was the same name. Can’t remember. Wow…
Either way, Lich's original backstory/ role in a fanfic [I won't name because I wrote it in middle school and it was AWFUL], was very different from what it is now. The plot of the fuc was a ripoff of the movie ,“Heavy Metal” so Ronnie James Dio or Alice Cooper were the two voices I usually associated him with. "The Mob Rules" and "The Black Widdow" are Lich's theme songs.
BUT Kevin Spacey's voice fits Lich very well, now that you pointed it out.
He is oozing with Hopper vibes.
If I had an obscene amount of money to spend, I would hire these voice actors/actresses/ singers (resurrect them from the grave if necessary) to play my ocs and/or Characters from Invader Zim that never officially were assigned hired voice actors.
At least most of my Irken ocs have voices picked out.
Pepperoncini: Sir Christopher Lee (?) Earle Hyman (?) Even those two would have to pitch their voices lower and more gravely. Cini's voice, especially in his later years, is very, VERY deep and ravaged by centuries of smoking pipe amber. I guess the contrast in his bright, lighthearted, bubbly personality amuses me.
I can’t think of a voice that perfectly matches the voice Cini has in my head. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I loosely based his personality on Phyllis Diller and Vincent Price, to give an idea of his mannerisms.
Spinch: Martha Kelly (so shy)
Hoola: Eric Bauza (His personality is based on Daffy Duck, though lacking in WB toon antics and the lisp.)
Mem: Bette Midler (first choice), possibly Kathy Bates or Meryl Streep
Some of Mem's swarm I have casted
Handoverfist aka Hof: Eugene Mirman
Ferocity: Betsy Sodaro
Skathe: Jenny Slate
Starboard: John Fiedler
Zee: Jillian Bell
Rook/ the Sage: Originally I imagined John Cleese playing Rook, at least in Rook's older years (because he was based on the Monty Python’s Holy Grail Tim the Enchanter) or Suzy Izzard.
But again, now that you pointed out the parallels, David Foley fits pretty well too.
Miyuki: I'm sure plenty of people would disagree with me, but I think Cher (or at least a younger Cher), Lynne Lipton (again, younger), or Cree Summer would make great choices for Miyuki.
Kii: Can't get Melissa Fahn's voice out of my head for her, but any suggestions are welcome. Maybe Doro Pesch.
Soxx: Percy Rodriguez (would have to bring him back from the dead)
Hitz: Richard Romanus
Spork: Lorenzo Music (I just do)
Commander Poki: Brooke Dillman (I love that woman's voice. Boss as shit.)
Frylady Soo-Garr: Kristin Chenoweth or Grey DeLisle. Either. Either or would pull off her vindictive personality perfectly.
Pielord Emis-Gee: Ron Funches
Brewmaster Shakkin: Christopher McCulloch
Yeet: Hong Chau (so spunky!)
Vroog: Billie Mae Richards or Maria Bamford for a living person to play her.
Irken Gir would be played by Rosearik Rikki Simons, just no synthesizers or anything.
This is not a complete list by far. If you’re curious about any of ocs that I didn’t list, you can ask about or make suggestions.
Hearing the voices helps develop the character for me

I read that The Witcher showrunners want a big name to play Regis The Vampire in season 4 of The Witcher. Here are the top fifteen actors that I think could play Regis (the good guy vampire) for season 4 of The Witcher. Anthony Head Simon Vance Alan Tudyk Peter Capaldi James Nesbitt David Tennant (might be too busy) Michael Sheen (might be too busy) Terrence Mann Charles Dance Benadict Cumberbatch Tom Hiddleston Tom Ellis Simon McBurney Simon Bamford (was Peter Vincent for a Fright Night documentary. Filling in for Roddy McDowall.) Tilda Swinton. (Like you weren't thinking it!)

the cast.
for those unfamiliar with johanna's canon or are interested in my takes on the characters/their relationships with her. excluding anthony for obvious reasons and toby. *obviously, i will not force anyone into this canon! it's simply my interpretation.
benjamin bar.ker/s.weeney t.odd: ( 1806-1848 ) johanna's biological father. benjamin was shipped to prison by turpin to get him out of the way. johanna's feelings about her father are very complicated and not good. she does not want a father figure. turpin abused her, why would she allow anyone else to do that to her? in canon, she is blissfully unaware that he is her father. in modern verses ( including the hawkins verse ), she does find out that he is her father. johanna does not take well to the news at all. because of her connections to barker/todd, she is hounded by the media for interviews and asked about him. johanna is not interested in discussing her biological father at all. through benjamin, she has a living grandfather. she does not know about him in canon verses, but does in modern. she does not keep in touch with him.
lucy ba.rker: ( 1808-1848 ) johanna's biological mother. her feelings on her mother are equally as complicated. yes, like any child, johanna wants a mother. she grew up envious of other children who had a maternal figure in their life. however, through the limited information she has about lucy, her feelings aren't straightforward and entirely positive. she would like to think that her mother was an angel, a caring and patient kind of women. turpin told her that her mother poisoned herself. johanna does not know if she lived or died. suicide and attempted suicide was highly controversial during this period. from her perspective, her mother couldn't be the saint she likes to imagine, especially considering that she's under the impression that her mother poisoned herself so she wouldn't have to take care of johanna. in modern verses, she is aware of the tragic fall of lucy. her feelings about her remain complicated. no matter what, johanna is treated like no more than an extension of lucy by turpin and benjamin when she's her own person. as much as she doesn't want it to bother her, she can't bring herself to remain fully happy with that knowledge.
judge phillip joseph turpin: ( 1783-1848 ) johanna's guardian. turpin was born to a prestigious and wealthy upper-middle-class family ( what we could consider today to be an upper-class family ). he was physically abused by his father and neglected by his mother. it was always expected of him to do well in school. to wear his family's name with pride. he went to university for law, becoming a lawyer faster than most of his classmates. he was extremely successful. through this occupation, he met lucy when assisting her father with his will. he became obsessed with her, proposing after meeting with her for the second time. lucy declined. this made turpin want her more. he rose up, becoming a judge, which he hoped would impress lucy. when she continued to reject him, he became obsessed with the reason why. he soon found out that it was because she'd met another man: ben.jamin barker. obsessed with his newfound power -- power he never had within his family, but now he could rule all of london -- he began plotting a way to get rid of barker. this lead to the events of canon.
beadle simon bamford: ( 1790-1848 ) turpin's accomplice. his relationship with johanna is strained. he frequently piled on turpin’s emotional abuse. though after the birth of his own daughter, he began to regret his actions of the past. he started to ignore johanna more often than talk to her. it’s then that he makes attempts to defend lucy ( hence why she calls for the beadle ). still far from a good man, yet realized the wrongs of his ways. he tried pleading with her while she was in fogg's to leave with him, but knowing she would only end up as turpin's wife that way, she declined. johanna does not forgive him for everything he did to her and is unaware of his complicated feelings.
mrs. eleanor lov.ett: ( 1806-1848 ) the barker's landlady. lovett was not a fan of johanna when she was a baby and if they ever "reunited," they would not be fond of each other then. to lovett, johanna represents the life benjamin had with lucy. she's a reminder of their love and devotion. part of lovett's goal in act two of the musical is to get todd to stop trying to get his daughter back. she would likely act maternal in front of todd when interacting with johanna but be cold behind his back. johanna is spiteful and would not make any attempts to get along with her after getting treated like that. once again, johanna is thought of as no more than an extension of lucy.
daniel o'higgins/alfoldo p.irelli: ( 1822-1848 ) the first kill. pirelli was an irish immigrant who came to england as a young lad. benjamin offered him a job to sweep up hair in his shop. this was an incredible opportunity for daniel since most of the work irish children got were less than ideal. he could end up in the workhouse. he could wind up dead. through this mindless, boring task of his, he learned from benjamin about barbering. he specifies that benjamin was sent to botany bay prison in australia which means he was still working for the barkers when benjamin got arrested. lucy couldn't keep him since her husband was gone. he had nothing. it's not wonder he pretended to be italian and scam people when he had literally no other ways to survive. after blackmailing todd, he is killed. the first human kill of the musical.
