The Duke wakes each morning to the sound of clanging metal and the smell of exhaust pipes. Something about the bitter cold, the damp air, the skittish feet… it all blurs together into something familiar, but not necessarily pleasant. With a groan and a huff, he sits up, not standing just yet. A thin mattress and even thinner sheets hold minimal warmth to fight off the bone chilling air. Shivers and aches dance across his skin.

His eyes travel from the dresser in front of him to the warming lamp at his side. Cold fingers meet his scalp as he ruffles his hair, trying to force sleep from coming back. Being rich in credits doesn’t mean luxury. Not in this pit. There’s work to be done.

How long has that sentence been running through his mind? Since his position as a Duke? Since his presence in the Fortress? Since his days as an orphan, fighting for scraps? Rest is a daydream.

Stretching with a sigh, he rises, getting dressed and dealing a final blow to the idea of any more sleep for the morning.

A knock at the door draws his attention before a weak smile stretches across his tired expression. The metal creaks and moves aside to reveal a small melusine toddling in with a tray of teas and pastries, wishing the Duke a good morning. The steam of the dish warms up the harsh atmosphere, with the smile of a melusine bringing some light into his morning. Maybe the cold of the Fortress isn’t so harsh, after all.
