Detail of an illustration by Sidney Sime, 1865 - 1941. Sime gained fame as the origional illustrator of author Lord Dunsany's fanciful tales. Lovecraft knew of Sime and counted him among his favorite artists. The work below might well have inspired Lovecraft's tale AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS as much as the paintings of Nicholas Roerich. The glowing eyes seen in a cavern beneath the bottom of the cluster of buildings might also have been inspiration for Lovecraft's idea of the shoggoth creatures who figure so importantly in that tale.
