Diwali: the festival of lights
Diwali is not just a festival. Under the spectacle of flashing lights and loud fireworks lies a much deeper significance. It is a five day long affair of joy and togetherness that showcases India’s cultural diversity.

Diwali translates to the ‘festival of lights’. Light being a metaphor to the happiness, hope and good that encompasses the celebration. The name Diwali or ‘Deepawali’ derives its name from Diya, a clay lamp lit on the day as a source of light.
Diwali finds its roots in mythological stories that have been passed on for thousands of years. The stories vary for different spiritual backgrounds, although each story depicts the triumph of good over evil. Hinduism celebrates Diwali by commemorating the return of the Lord Ram after defeating the demon, King Ravan.
According to mythology, the citizens of Ram’s Kingdom welcomed Lord Ram back from 14 years of exile by illuminating the path of his return with Diyas. The exile brought about a series of events that symbolise the importance of love, dedication, commitment, fearlessness, respect and family.
Colour in the streets
As the festival approaches, the streets are draped in colourful decorations and the world becomes a canvas. Sweet shops display their wares proudly, enticing passers-by with their irresistible aroma. Relatives who live far away visit each other and rekindle old memories. Young children kneel down and learn how to make colourful Rangoli patterns from their elders.
The whole family works hard cleaning their home, ensuring it is spotless to welcome the goddess of prosperity. Masses throng the temples and chant hymns, their harmonious voices echoing throughout the neighbourhood. A newer way of celebrating Diwali is by setting fireworks, something that every child and adult looks forward to.
Celebrating at Swinburne
I have always celebrated Diwali with my family but this year would have been the first time I would have celebrated it without them. Moving to a different country and starting all over again was hard for me, and as Diwali approached I felt more and more homesick.
A chance encounter got me involved with the Swinburne Punjabi Club and it was a pleasant surprise when I found out that Swinburne was going to celebrate Diwali on campus. I decided to take part and joined dance rehearsals for the event with gusto. Almost everyone at the rehearsals was a stranger to me but with time that changed. It was the most fun I had had since arriving in Australia.
The lead up to the event and the festive atmosphere reminded me of back home. The atmosphere was joyous and exuberant just like it was when I was growing up in India. The event itself did not disappoint. I remember waking up early in the morning with butterflies in my stomach.
It had been a long time since I had dressed up in Indian attire and doing that here on campus with all the other girls was an adventure in itself. As the moment of our performance approached all of us became silent, contemplating the last four weeks we had spent together.
We made our way towards the stage talking in hushed voices but right before going on I looked around and everyone had a smile on their faces and I knew that this was just the beginning. The bonds we forged would carry on for the rest of our lives.
