Today was a very long but good day. We started it off with a Tea ceremony at Hama-Rikyu Gardens. This place was absolutely stunning, tear jerking if I may. We were split up into two groups, and got to have tea with a world famous tea master. She is the most famous tea master in Japan. We were started off with a sweet snack called Namagashi, they are made out of rice four and sweet bean paste. They were delicious and very pretty. We were to eat the sweets before drinking the tea to give the tea a bit of a better taste. We learned about the traditions and routine for a tea ceremony, and watched the tea master prepare and cleanse the tools. It was a very unique and special experience. We were then released for the day, so myself and a few other students explored the gardens. After a little while we decided to go to the Tsukiji Fish Market; it was very very busy and had many food vendors. I tried some foods I have never had before like crab cake with mustard and mayonnaise, wagyu beef, and eel. It was very cool. After that a few of us decided to go thrifting, so we explored a different town and found a bunch of cool shops. Then headed home for the night.
Academic Reflection
The Hama-Rikyu Gardens is actually quite large, and has many different sections and ponds. The whole garden is a reminder of the Edo ere. The Shioiri-no-ike pond is the only seawater pond in Tokyo, left from the Edo era, it is connected to the Tokyo Bay, separated by gates. The Shogun Oagariba was the Shogun's landing place, from their ships. At the teahouse, the ochaya, Shoguns would eat meals and rest here. These are some connections to the things we have learned so far.
According to the Following Ceremony article, Eisai believed that tea was a great aid in nourishing health, and the secret to long life. I feel this can be interpreted in two ways; literally, where tea is actually healthy for you, and mentally, the peace it brings is good for the health. To support this, during the tea ceremony, we found out that match tea is very high in vitamin C and has a lot of antioxidants. We were also told about the 4 principals of a tea ceremony, which are harmony, tranquility, respect, and purity. This meaning that tea ceremonies are a good stress relief, which is also good for the health.
The tea master also talked about ichigo ichie, "this meeting could be our last", every encounter with other people is unique, which helps people to appreciate each other and the time spent together. I believe this is a great way of thinking, and really appreciated this experience and learning from it.
