this is old discourse but when at a certain point the position became "people should just use whatever label no matter what they actually mean with it it's fine" a backlash to that started which was along the lines of "actually it's useful for labels to have one specific meaning when you're organizing using those labels" (usually with some appeals to materialism thrown in like every post on this website but without doing any of the actual material analysis of course) and to an extent i can understand what is meant by that (obviously you are not a trans woman if you're a shefab which was what the first position was like moving towards) but like is it useful to organize along identity label lines to this extent? like i dont see how people "misusing" the word lesbian to include some bi women for instance would meaningfully have an impact on organizing against lesbophobia unless your idea of that is lesbian separatism (which is obviously silly). along those same lines i think a lot of our more "useful" labels for activism have always been the more open-ended ones (as much as people don't like queer that really is one of its merits, and the same could be said about transgender) that do not require this strict delineation and definition
