Chapter Thirty-Two: PLUS ULTRA!
Tumblr media
The blonde Pro-Hero, Pixie Bob, announced a test of courage for both classes, and everyone erupted in murmurs of excitement. When the remedial students were hauled away, unwillingly by Aizawa, the rules were explained. They were able to use their Quirks in any way possible to attempt to scare the other class while walking through the forest in the dead of night. Class 1-B was tasked as the scarers, and they rushed off into the woods. The rest of Class 1-A was paired into duos, each had to go into the forest three minutes apart from the first team. And for once, Minori actually looked a bit excited about the activity.
"You look pretty excited, Minori-san!" Midoriya called from across the clearing as he made his way over. She nodded as the first pair headed into the forest.
Minutes passed without a hitch until Minori snapped her head upwards from her seated position on the ground, a faint smell wafting into her nose.
"Minori-san?" Midoriya called, flinching at her abrupt movement.
"Do you smell that?" she took another breath, this one deeper than before. The stench hit her instantly, resembling a bitter smell of garlic. She almost choked at how pungent it had become compared to the faint scent she had smelled earlier as it traveled through her nostrils. As the smell permeated through the oaky trees, she was finally able to see the faint wisps of smoke curling up into the air. However, something was odd, instead of the familiar ash-grey, the smoke that hung in the air was purple, unnatural.
"Smoke," Midoriya commented, finally catching on.
"No," Minori whispered harshly, finally able to discern that this wasn't regular smoke. "That's poison!" Scrambling onto her feet to tell Mandalay, who was staring off into the distance with confusion in her eyes. She paused, only to be greeted with two unknown figures hovering over another one of the Pussycats and brandishing their weapons.
What the fuck is happening, Minori thought, glancing over the villainous individuals.
"Villains!" Mandalay called as one of the villains cackled out, his laugh ringing throughout the clearing as he held his sheathed weapon over the Pro-Hero's head, threatening a blow. "Everyone, go! Combat is to be avoided at all costs! Class President, do I make myself clear?"
"Ki-san! Let's go!" Iida demanded, calling out to her. "Mandalay gave us specific instructions!"
"Go on ahead, "she called back, turning to Mandalay, seeing the sweat trickling down the Pro Hero's forehead as she faced the two villains who had held Pixie Bob hostage. "Mandalay! Kota, I know where he is!"
The hero spared the girl one last glance, nodding, and Minori left Iida and the other students, veering away from where the other students were running off to. With hurried footsteps, she retraced her steps to the familiar path she went down once before.
As Minori raced off for Kota, she deduced that there surely had to be more villains than the two she encountered, the rest had to be hiding within the forest, waiting to ambush the unsuspecting students. Pessimistic thoughts flashed behind her eyes at the idea of being too late. What if he was dead? "Kota!" she cried out, her eyes raking the stone path up to the cliff. It seemed that her prayers were answered, Kota was alive, but not for long if she didn't move now!
An incredibly tall man laughed menacingly over the boy. The villain raised his extremely muscular arm, nerves, and skinless muscle the same size as his entire body. In an instant, he dropped his fist. Using her legs to propel her forward, she grabbed Kota and moved away from the deadly attack.
Raising herself off the ground, she crouched protectively before Kota, who was hiccuping his cries with snot running down his nose. Narrowing her eyes at the blonde, she swallowed a gasp, her large silver-grey eyes looking into a dark small black eye. His left eye creepily replaced by a prosthetic one that resembled gears and teeth, a large scar going across the left side of his face, finishing his frighteningly scary appearance.
"I know you," the villain announced lowly, slowly making his way closer to the two. "You're from the archive list."
Ignoring him, Minori stood onto her feet, "You're going to be alright, Kota," she declared. "I'm going to save you, no matter what. "
"No matter what, you'll save him?" the villain cackled, the vibrations from his throat scaring even the birds within the trees. "Wonderful, you have the mentality of a true hero candidate, but I know you." he sneered, looking down to observe his new opponent, his eyes glinting in recognition. "Tatsumaki's daughter. I've heard a lot about you, Shigaraki had a lot to say, at least." She grimaced at the name but never once faltering from her attack position. "I've been told not to kill you. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I CAN'T TORTUE YOU. NOW LET ME SEE YOU BLEED!" he declared, unsheathing the cloak from his bulky body to reveal his right arm twisting menacingly with muscle.
In an instant, the villain lunged for her, his arm contacting with her arm. With the force of the attack, Minori flew backward, smashing into the rocked wall. The pain was deep, stinging, and burning within her arm, almost as if the humerus bone was smoldering.
"Ah," the blonde recalled, laughing evilly, inches away from her, his fist drawn. "I almost forgot, where's the Bakugo kid?"
Her eyes widened. Bakugo? Why do they need Bakugo?
Tensing her calves, she leaped away from his threatening fist, but not his foot. Her mind screamed out as the pain drove through her gut, skidding on the debris ground. Every thought she had became a blur as the burning pain licked up her back like a scorching fire.
The pain increased in waves, as though her blood became acid, intent on destroying her from the inside out. With one violent contraction, the congealed contents of her stomach emerged in the night sky, the liquid containing an unpleasant warmth to it. Minori wiped at her mouth, acidic and bloody residue forming a shiny dark patch on her shirt sleeve.
"HA! Look at all that blood!" he throatily crooned.
Spitting more residue out from behind her lips, Minori shook her head, knowing that she can't worry about anyone else at the moment-- her priority is to protect Kota!
Now that she was fully exposed to the assault, the villain set his piercing sight on the battered girl. Clicking her teeth, she pushed herself off the ground, slamming her fists into his arm, she activated her Quirk and sent solidified punch air at the enemy.
"Is this supposed to be your Quirk?" the enemy asked, bored. "It's got speed, no doubt, but--" Minori widens her eyes as he sends another kick into her gut. "--it doesn't pack a punch!" he mocks.
Wheezing, she mindlessly grabs onto her abdomen, heaving out of her already empty stomach. "My Quirk is muscle augmentation! Enabling me to augment the muscle fibers that sit beneath my skin, granting me speed and strength!"
Befitting his appearance, the villain seemed to perk up at the sight of her blood, driving him into insanity. "It's the end for you, hero! You got nothing on me, for I am Muscular!" his small pupils expanded in a bloodthirsty fashion, his fist coming down alarmingly fast for a finishing blow.
She couldn't help the gasp that falls from her lips. Am I going to die?
"Is this what you did to my parents?! Torture them?" Kota shouted, his voice cracking as teardrops continued to fall.
Suddenly, Muscular pauses, his lips tugging into a sadistic smile, his eyes shining in a mixture of shock and excitement. "Who would've thought that the one standing before me is the child of the Water Hose duo!" he laughs, before his lips tug into a tight-lipped smile. "All I wanted to do was kill, but your stupid parents got in the way of that, and it seems like you're not far off the same path as them." Forgetting about the damaged girl, the blonde turns to face the crying boy. Pulling his arm back, he prepares to strike Kota. "Don't dare blame me for the death of your parents. The only person to blame is them for involving themselves in a matter that didn't concern them. I don't blame them for my eye, so don't blame me for your death either!"
Immediately, Minori sucks in a deep breath, her hands ripping out the latch of her belt, the flaps of her fan opening in a slick and smooth fashion. Activating her Quirk, she conjures a crescent-shaped construct of solidified air. "You're wrong!" Minori announced, successfully intervening before Muscular could lay a finger on Kota. "It is your fault!" manipulating her air into sharp blades, she twisted her body, much like the technique she used during training. The spikes formed quickly, making its way right for the villain. "Risking our lives and protecting is our job!" With that, the air moved with precision and at 100% of her abilities, piercing the villain's muscle fibers. With a clash, the blonde was forced back into the cliffside, the impact forcing a column of rocks to fall onto him.
Riding onto the gust of wind from the destroyed cliff, Minori grabs Kota before he makes his descent down to the flat ground. "Sorry," she heaves, brushing the dust off of him. "I didn't mean to send you back too. Can you run, because we've got to move."
Speechless, he can only nod.
"Okay, let' s--" Minori froze, eyes widening into the size of saucers.
No way.
"Not half bad, Ki," came Muscular's horrifying voice. Laughing, his black pupils dilated, showing off his murderous intent. Where there had been smooth skin was torn muscle and red, as raw as any carcass at the butchers surrounding every part of his vital organs.
"Stay back!" Minori yelled, her panicked tone evident as she flared her nostrils. She grabbed onto Kota's arms, pulling him behind her. "Why are you doing this?! What do you want from us?!" she asked, aiming to buy some time as her eyes scattered around her surroundings, in hopes of an escape plan.
"Fuck should I know?" taking out his prosthetic, he pulled his humongous hand into his pocket, pulling out another eye, this one much more dark and wicked. "I'm just here to have some fun, play some games, but now, let's get serious." He finished, eyes flickering into Minori's shaky ones.
"Kota, grab onto me!" Without a second to waste, she tensed her calves and leaped off the cliff when she felt skinny arms wrap around her shoulders.
As she ran, she could feel a pair of cold eyes staring into the back of her head. Her heart beats like it is ready to explode any second, her mind a scattered mess. Behind her, she could hear the jeering laughter of her enemy, his rage, and maliciousness apparent as he takes twisted delight in her fear.
The pounding footsteps of her pursuer echo throughout the woods; as she snatched a look behind her, she was met with a fleeting blurred glimpse of pure muscle smashing into the cliff.
Twisting her feet to avoid the falling rocks, she barely evades Muscular's attack, sending her and Kota tumbling to the mountain. Her breath came in small spurts, hot and nervous. Her fingers curled into sweaty fists at her sides as mud smeared her burning face, rubble matting her hair.
"Kota," she calls out to the boy. "I need you to run back to the facility the moment I clash with Muscular." Minori knows her priority is to keep him safe, and if it was possible, she would've run with him so Aizawa could handle the villain, but she recognizes that Muscular's speed surpasses her.
"It's not going to work!" cried Kota.
Pushing herself onto her feet, she narrows her eyes at the large man with muscles moving like it has a mind of its own. "I'm not asking you, I'm telling you!" she asserted, "I promise he won't lay a finger on you-- I won't let him. So, please, run!"
Throwing herself forward, her lungs and heart pumped aggressively, but the air didn't seem to be enough as she sprinted ahead, trembling in her exhausted limbs. Forcing out an air blast from her hands, she kept the blonde at bay. "Kota! Please, run!" she begged with moist eyes.
"This is so much fun!" Muscular gloated, the mass of tangled muscle fibers rising as he clicked his mandible with excitement. The enormous compound eyes glinting with bloodlust. Suddenly, he pushes past her attack and strikes her with a towering punch.
Biting onto her lip to keep from crying out, tears stung her eyes as she realized that the chances she would survive against this fatal blow were despairingly low. Her mind flashed a blaring white as images appeared: Mina's beaming smile, Nezu's kind gestures, her promise.
"ST-STOP!" Kota sobbed, activating his Quirk and splashing a wave of water on Muscular, effectively gaining his attention.
"Don't worry, boy!" he chirped. "You're up next! I'll smash ya to pieces!"
Enraged, Minori clenched her jaw at the villain's declaration. "You're not going to do shit!" Effectively pushing the villain off of her, heaving, she stands tall, eyes narrowed. The sudden shifts around her transform into a frenzy around her, making the hairs on her body stand up.
It was like a scene out of a movie. Minori's orbs radiated a pure white, and her hair moved as if it were snakes on top of Medusa. Immediately, she tossed herself back into the heat of battle. Rapidly she repeated the movement of circle-walking, swiftly decreasing the resistance around her, the image of her blurring. Spinning, she exited the spiraling current without Muscular noticing. Raising her foot, she roared: "PLUS ULTRA!" sending a wide-sweeping kick, moving the tornado at high speeds. Entrapping Muscular, he smashes into the cliff, becoming incapacitated. His artificial eye pops out, rolling to a stop in front of a bruised and battered.
"Why?" Kota whimpers, "why would you go so far to protect me? You don't even know me!"
Because I said I would, so one day I can become a hero. Possibly, even yours.
A scream from deep within forces it's way from Minori's mouth as if her terrified soul is incinerating and replaced with victory. Fists clenched and nails digging deeply into the palms of her hand, her voice becomes hoarse from the roars of triumph.
Wiping the fallen tears from her cheeks, Minori turns back to face Kota. "Get on my back, we're leaving."
Feet pounding the grassy ground, she comes to an abrupt stop, catching a tuft of green.
"Midoriya!" she calls out, running to him.
"M-Minori?!" His emerald eyes widened in shock, jaw gaping when she came to rest in front of him.
Carefully, she places Kota on the ground and lightly grabs onto his shoulders. "Kota, we need your help. With these fires spreading, everything will become a dead-end without you. I need you to use your Quirk. I need you to save us." His orbs gleamed as she finished with a shaky smile, patting his head.
"Midoriya, bring Kota to the facility for me and relay this to Mandalay: the villain's goal is Bakugo." With one last fleeting glance at the two, she swivels on her feet back toward the forest. "Good luck!"
"Wait! Where are you going?" The greenette shouts at her retreating figure.
"I'm going to help my friends!"
