Shane Kalyn is a photographer whose images celebrate the beauty of the natural world. A resident of Vancouver, Canada, Shane has explored the rugged wilderness of British Columbia, armed with his trusty Nikon D500. He embarks on adventures across Canada and beyond, always in search of the perfect shot. One of the defining characteristics of Shane’s photography is his use of light. In many of his photos, dawn and dusk serve as the backdrop, bathing his subjects in a soft, ethereal glow. What truly sets Shane’s work apart is his passion for Earth’s four natural elements: air, earth, fire and water, all represented through a series of stunning images.

Mount Seymour Provincial Park, Canada.
After preening each other's feathers, the ravens took turns inspecting every nook and cranny in each other's beaks—talking to one another throughout the process. In three winters of observing the gift-sharing, grooming, and singing courtship behaviors of ravens on the mountain, the photographer had never witnessed anything like this.

When it comes to intelligence, ravens are in the company of chimpanzees and dolphins. If a raven knows another raven is watching it hide its food, it will pretend to put the food in one place while really hiding it in another. Since the other ravens are smart too, it takes real cunning to outsmart their own species!

Beak to Beak. Winged Life Winner. Common ravens usually mate for life, and this intimate, open-beaked moment captured by photographer Shane Kalyn is likely an example of allopreening—reciprocal grooming that serves both to solidify social bonds and to keep plumage clean. Tender as this behavior is, it sometimes puts the birds at risk of an aggressive intervention from other members of their species. A 2014 study by scientists at the University of Vienna revealed that ravens will often interrupt grooming sessions between other paired individuals, especially those with more tenuously established bonds. These interventions are an apparent attempt to prevent neighboring couples from developing the kinds of strong pair-bonds that lead to greater reproductive success.

ooc; working on replies
I hate that I’ve not been posting replies within the last week. I’ve had a lot going on with the dog-sitting and other things in real life.
Also, my niece is being induced tomorrow so I’ll be getting another great nephew before tomorrow is over. Because of Covid-19, we won’t get to meet the little fellow until Thursday at the earliest. I cannot wait to welcome Legend Lynn to our family. He’s going to be so loved and spoiled. Just like his big sister, Kalyn.

¿Sabías que el antifaz en la cara de los mapaches les ayuda a ver mejor? Esto debido a que el color negro absorbe la luz, reduciendo los reflejos en su vista. 📸 Shane Kalyn
