A re-creation and multimedia conception of the film Like Eagles (Mānand-e ‘Oqāb).
In this performance, playwright/librettist Shaista Latif, composer Osama Shalabi, arranger Isak Goldschneider and the Land of Kush ensemble imagine a multimedia re-creation and conceptualization of Like Eagles (Mānand-e ‘Oqāb): the first feature film produced in Afghanistan. An exquisitely surreal vision of Kabul in the 1960s, it follows a young girl as she wanders through the city on a journey from her hometown to attend a day of national celebration.
In light of subsequent tragic events in Afghan history, the project confronts Western stereotypes of Afghanistan in a stage work combining music, text and film.

In Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, where a woman’s survival is dependent on a man, a family’s patriarch is imprisoned for educating his daughters. Without their patriarch, the family reaches dire straits at the end of their food supply. The smart, literate, younger daughter, Parvana, is forced to cut her hair and disguise herself as a boy to move about the city without fear of capture, beating or death. In a land where a woman could be harassed or even beaten for walking unescorted to the neighborhood well for water, we are shown the brutal reality of gender oppression in this harsh period of Afghanistan’s history.
The patriarch, a former school teacher, remembers and retells stories to his daughter of his country from when its people were scientists, philosophers, and artists. He tells a story of a country filled with beauty and culture, caught in wars over its borders for thousands of years. His boyhood memories are of freedom and studies, until their world once again became chaotic (under Soviet rule, a time where, to this day, the land became littered with explosive mines). The Taliban took over to restore order, leading to full oppression of women under their “religious” rules, turning students against their teachers.
The Taliban gained control over Kabul in 1996 and stayed in power until their loss of control over Kabul in December 2001. Under their control, women were forced to cover themselves in restrictive burkas, were unable to be out of their houses without the escort of a male family member, and were not permitted to attend the marketplace or school. It was against Taliban law for a woman to be taught to read or write, carrying a punishment of beating or death.
Parvana’s father has taught her to read and write, and it is this skill that gives her the connection and hope to free him from imprisonment. Dressed as a boy, we see how the mood of the merchants and people on the street change as they acknowledge, joke with and hire Parvana for her reading and writing skills. Emboldened as only a boy could be, Parvana ventures to check on her father in prison, a task that earlier in the film led her mother to be badly beaten for being seen outside of her home unescorted.
The Breadwinner is a beautifully animated but troubling glimpse into the oppression of Afghani life during the Taliban’s rule. The story, adapted from the children’s novel written by Deborah Ellis, is simple, while the subject is hard. It weaves the story of Afghanistan like a colorful fairy tale while simultaneously telling the story of Parvana and her journey to free her father, where the brightest color is found in the steely, green strength of her eyes. Parvana’s look is familiar and reminiscent of the famous June 1985 National Geographic cover, the Afghani girl with the haunting green eyes.
It is hard to watch this strong, beautiful, young girl live in fear on her city’s streets, dismissed at the markets, and punished for trying to help her family to survive certain death without their male support.
This is not a movie for young children. It earns its PG-13 rating for violence and aggression against women. The Breadwinner captures the spirit of a people who have weathered centuries of war during one of their many difficult periods of history, a people and history worth fighting for.

Irish Film London (IFL), Ireland’s film and animation champions in the UK this week partnered with the Women in Film & TV UK (WFTV) network, publisher Emerald Street and distributor Studio Canal on an exclusive preview screening and panel discussion for the Academy Award nominated Irish film The Breadwinner. Over 180 people attended the event which was held at the Ham Yard Hotel in London’s West End.
The feature length animation, which was executive produced by Angelina Jolie, tells the story of Parvana, a young girl living under Taliban rule in 2001 Afghanistan. After the wrongful arrest of her father, she must cut off her hair and dress like a boy to support her family. In her new role she soon discovers a completely different world filled with both freedom and danger.
The film’s themes of strong independent female characters persevering despite oppressive patriarchal structures found well-voiced ambassadors in the post-screening panel discussion. Chaired by Empire Magazine film journalist Helen O’Hara, the panel included former BAFTA Chair and current board member of WFTV Anne Morrison, BBC correspondent Yalda Hakim and the film’s director Nora Twomey, also co-founder of Cartoon Saloon.
Parvana’s story raised discussions among the panel around international women’s rights issues, the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns and the under-representation of women in front of and behind the camera.
Attendees, who were comprised of Irish film and animation fans, women’s rights advocates and key industry influencers reacted with great warmth for the film. One attendee said “what a moving, thought-provoking and beautiful movie it was”.

The Breadwinner của Angelina Jolie tung trailer phim đầy hấp dẫn
Sau một thời gian dài kể từ khi công bố về dự án phim The Breadwinner, mới đây nhà sản xuất đã tung ra trailer phim đầy hấp dẫn, giới thiệu đến khán giả những hình ảnh đầu tiên trong phim.
Năm 2017, Angelina Jolie dù không tham gia bất kỳ vai diễn nào trong một tác phẩm điện ảnh nhưng nữ minh tinh tài ba của Hollywood đã ghi dấu ấn sâu đậm đối với khán giả với vị trí: đạo diễn phim. Bộ phim First They Kill My Father của Angelina Jolie về nạn diệt chủng Khmer đỏ tại Campuchia đã khiến cả giới điện ảnh xúc động và trở thành tác phẩm được Campuchia lựa chọn để tham gia tranh giải tại Oscar 2018 với hạng mục Phim nói tiếng nước ngoài xuất sắc.
Tưởng chừng như First They Kill My Father là điểm sáng nhất của “đả nữ” trong năm nay, nhưng điều đó hoàn toàn không phải vì bộ phim hoạt hình The Breadwinner do Angelina Jolie hợp tác với Cartoon Saloon sản xuất, sau khi giành được hai giải thưởng quan trọng tại Animation is Film đã được ấn định thời gian công chiếu vào ngày 17/11 tới.
Sau hơn năm tháng tung teaser trailer phim đầu tiên, mới đây nhà sản xuất đã tung ra trailer phim chính thức tiết lộ nội dung câu chuyện hoàn chỉnh hơn. Những hình ảnh đơn giản trong trailer kết hợp với bối cảnh xã hội được truyền tải đã rõ nét đã khiến khán giả có cái nhìn chính xác hơn về bối cảnh câu chuyện được lựa chọn xây dựng trong phim.
The Breadwinner là bộ phim được chuyển thể dựa trên cuốn tiểu thuyết ăn khách cùng tên của nhà văn Deborah Ellis. Nội dung chính kể về câu chuyện của cô bé Parvana 11 tuổi, sống tại Afghanistan vào năm 2001. Cô bé cùng với cha mẹ và em trai sống hạnh phúc trong căn nhà nhỏ, bất chấp ở thế giới bên ngoài bọn khủng bố Taliban đang hoành hành. Hàng ngày Parvana cùng bố đi bán hàng ngoài chợ để kiếm sống, cuối ngày hai cha con lại trở về quây quần với gia đình. Cuộc sống dù có khổ cực nhưng với họ tất cả thành viên trong nhà được bên nhau mạnh khỏe là điều hạnh phúc.
Cuộc đời Parvana đã gặp bước ngoặt lớn khi bố của Parvana bị bắt oan và bị áp giải đến một nơi không ai biết đến. Cô bé cùng mẹ và em trai đã phải trải qua những tháng ngày thật sự khó khăn và Parvana đã quyết định cắt phăng mái tóc dài của mình để cải trang thành một cậu bé và bắt đầu hành trình tìm tung tích của bố cũng như tìm cơ hội để đưa ông trở về đoàn tụ với gia đình.
Sự mạnh mẽ, dũng cảm và lòng kiên trì được học từ những câu chuyện của bố về thời thơ ấu của ông, Parvana đã trở thành một cô gái vô cùng mạnh mẽ, không sợ hãi trước những khó khăn thử thách và nguy hiểm để có thể tìm lại được người bố thân thương. Không nhưng vậy cô bé còn làm quen được với một cậu bạn tốt bụng, chàng trai trẻ đã giúp đỡ Parvana rất nhiều trong hành trình tìm cha, đồng thời cũng đưa Parvana đến với những miền đất mới, những trải nghiệm thú vị và tìm ra những vẻ đẹp còn sót lại giữa đống đổ nát mà bọn khủng bố gây ra.
Nội dung bộ phim hấp dẫn, được xây dựng bởi e-kip làm phim khủng nên The Breadwinner đã thu hút được sự chú ý lớn từ phía khán giả sau khi dự án phim được công bố. Angelina Jolie là một nữ diễn viên kiêm đạo diễn xuất sắc, vài năm trở lại đây cô tập trung phát triển điện ảnh với vai trò đạo diễn kiêm nhà sản xuất và đã thu được thành công nhất định, khiến nhiều người trong giới điện ảnh phải nể phục. Kết hợp với Angelina Jolie là đạo diễn Nora Twomey và Cartoon Saloon – những nhà sáng tạo đã nhận được nhiều đề cử tại các giải thưởng hàn lâm cho những bộ phim hoạt hình nổi tiếng như: The Secret of Kells và Song of the Sea. Những cái tên “khủng” đứng đằng sau dự án chính là lời cam kết về chất lượng bộ phim đối với khán giả, đặc biệt là những khán giả nhỏ tuổi.
