Question for the masses:
How do you guys understand what a Shadownsinger is?
I think that Azriel is actually a different species. Yes, he looks Illyrian, but is he actually Illyrian? Because he said ‘I AM a Shadowsinger. It’s not a TITLE’. Which, to me, means, he isn’t in fact the same species as Cassian, or even Rhys.
For example, a High Lord ultimately becomes one--he isn’t born one. He is ‘selected’ by the Power, but when he is born, but he isn’t born into the title. For example, Lucien doesn’t display any High Lord signs, even though he is technically the son of one. On the other hand, do all High Lords have a breast/creature inside of them? Like Helion and Rhys and Tamlin? It would seem that they do, even if we haven’t seen them all, but that would mean that they ARE a different species as well?
However, in case of Azriel--he doesn’t become a Shadowsinger when he wants to. He is always a Shadowsinger. He doesn’t transform, he doesn’t become a different ‘creature’. He cannot get rid of the shadows either (it would seem). He orders them around and they take care of him, but they are always present in some manner.
So, is he like the Suriel? in fact a ‘creature’, but with a Fae visage, but a completely different entity?
Yet, at the same time, we know that the shadows ‘came to him’ when he was a child. Born of pain and loneliness and he ‘learned the language’ of the shadows. Does it mean that he was still always a shadowsinger, but the shadows manifested due to his trauma? Would they not have, if he had a normal childhood? Or would they still show up at some point?
Is he a different race? Possibly from peoples that came from Dusk? And shadowsinging was specific to them and only them?
Honestly, I am really driven crazy by this question! (if you haven’t noticed)
Because if he not technically an Illyrian at all, and only has the appearance of one, then it drastically changes the narrative. Yet he possesses lots of Illyrian characteristics, such as Killing Power and Siphons, as well as wings, and general appearance. He also possesses characteristics which are drastically NOT Illyrian, such as winnowing, maybe shadowalking, healing, etc. Even Cassian, with all his power, cannot winnow a lick.
What does everyone think?
