no but seriously the "my friend wanted some help with legal work" line in aa4 changed me as a person. i think about edgeworth trying to reach out to freshly disbarred phoenix in a million different ways and it not working, so this bastard pulls a damsel in distress move on the guy who's only weakness is people who need help and goes "wright:((( there's this very very tough case:((( innocent people will go to jail if you don't accept these first class plane tickets for you and your daughter and spend a week with me in this five star european hotel :((( oh i am so lost and confused ughh this legal work is killing me" AND IT WORKS MULTIPLE TIMESSSS
The seven year gap is a lot more tragic when you think about how sensitive Phoenix really is. Like this dude is still hung up and sad about being berated in the 4th grade, by a class full of kids. When there's thousands of people... he definitely wasn't in a good spot :(
^ i've been rewatching aa4 and saw this line, which is where this whole train of thought comes from; Trucy is very perceptive, obviously, and caught onto how Phoenix is sad when he's alone very quick for a 15 y.o.
Phoenix is a very extroverted/social person, and having to go into hiding definitely didn't do wonders for his self-esteem or perception. No wonder he clung to Kristoph despite knowing that he was the cause of everything; he'd basically take whatever friendship and socialization he could get.
klavier goes to visit kristoph one morning during the 7yg and as he comes in the first thing he sees is phoenix fucking wright of all people in boxers and a tshirt making bacon and eggs in his brother's kitchen. he thinks it couldnt possibly get any worse but then kristoph waltzes into the room with his hair down and wearing a nightrobe (and possibly not much else) as he says he wasnt expecting klavier to be arriving so early. klavier thinks this might be hell.
Gods, we’re lucky Phoenix only went through a stage of burnout, alcoholism and depression from the false evidence. I am surprised he didn’t try to off himself. I honestly think his daughter was the only thing keeping him hanging on for a bit, because everything he worked for was crashing around his ears. Because who will take care of her. Certainly not her father, not anymore. She’s so small, and someone has to make sure she eats. Vengeance would kick in later, but at first it was needing a lot of things to keep him forward.
I also think Edgeworth helped him a lot. Like gave him money to feed Trucy and keep the rent on the office/his apartment. Probably even passed him bits of “menial” law work to do so that he still felt useful and gain information about the Gavins. Because that man of all people knows what it is like to fall into a deep depression because his work and life are crashing around his ears. Because you used false evidence without your knowledge. I even think that when he wrote “Edgeworth chooses death” he intended to end it all, but then thought better of it. No one gets Phoenix’s mind more than Miles Edgeworth when all those chips are down.
It really sucks playing as Phoenix during That case because you know what happened from everyone talking about, you know the catalyst that sets this whole train car into motion, and you can't avoid it.
You have to make the same mistake. You have to go into this case knowing you will fail, because it's happened before and you can't change it.
But you wish, so desperately, after seeing how Phoenix's life fell apart, after being subjected to his lack of self-care and self-destructive tendencies, that you can just avoid it. That because now you are here, in his shoes, maybe you can grab fate by the reigns and fix everything that has come to past.
