if you want: cute girls and them developing their friendship / military aircraft fights / fantasy (norse mythology) worked into the story / surprisingly serious tone and nice character development in the second half
"Sigururi” is an anime featuring cute girl main characters who fight in fighter aircrafts against mysterious pillars that have popped up around the globe with the whole thing being a kind of interpretation of Norse mythology.
Cute girls and military weapons is a very popular mix in the anime landscape but they’re usually just fanservice and don’t offer much substance. There’s quite a handful of weebs who’re also into miliaty weaponry so they can geek out about that while also looking at waifus, right?
“Sigururi” definitely falls into this genre but somehow still manages to be a decent anime. As a disclaimer, I know fuck all about military aircrafts so I don’t know if the things these girls fly are in any way feasable weapons for all the stunts they pull (not do I care).
Anyway, as I said, pillars appear out of nowhere on Earth and they are seemingly indestructable. That is until a young boy claiming to be Odin appears before humans and grants “weapons” to fight the pillars. These weapons are Hero Wings, the names of the planes of the girls chosen to be Valkyries by Odin. The S-Rank Valkyries are called “Named” and one of them is who the story starts with. Claudia is sent from her original base in Europe to Tateyama in Japan. She is sometimes referred to as “Grim Reaper” due to the fact that she is always the only survivor when an attack is mounted on a pillar.
Due to this Claudia is more withdrawn and reserved going in complete contrast against her new teammates at the Tateyama base. Miyako, who is always cheerful and dives headfirst into any situation, Azuzu who is the team’s leader and kind of acts like a tsundere but is extremely smart and Sonoka, the youngest Named candidate. These 4 become the Valkyries of the Tateyama.
The first half of the anime is kind of all over the place and doesn’t offer much substance, which was initally what I was expecting from this anime anyway so I wasn’t surprised. A little bit of SoL for the girls to get to know each other and become friends and true comrades, attacks mounted on different kind of pillars, and some comedic episodes. There’s fanservice but much less than I thought there would be.
Up until then, my rating hovered around the 5/10 mark but the second half really kicks into gear. Multiple characters die, an attack ends up in a huge failure, one of our main characters develops PTSD and a quite intriguing plotline for Odin and Norse mythology’s place in the story is revealed. During this, the main cast kind of do their own stuff as well, leading to some nice self exploration and character development. You can definitely see just how the 4 girls changed from our first meeting with them which is more than a lot of anime can say for itself (surprisingly).
“Sigururi” isn’t a masterpiece but it is the kind of anime that’d definitely be able to carve a niche dedicated fandom for itself. The art in faraway shots is very wonky, obviously most money went into the fights. Sometimes the comedy or fanservice is ill-placed, appearing during situations where the atmosphere should be more on the serious side. Odin’s character and his actions are also a bit confusing to me. But all in all, this anime was a nice surprise and while it definitely wouldn’t be the first thing (or the 10th) I’d recommend watching if you’re bored, it actually wasn’t bad!
[7/10] (x)
Recommend: HELL Yeah! | Yes | Eh??? | Nope | There was actual money spent on this

God, it’s gonna be so fucking hard picking anime of the season. Jujutsu Kaisen is looking like the next knockout shonen smash, Wandering Witch is shaping up to be one of the best episodic journey series we’ve gotten in a long time, Adachi and Shinamura is fucking delightful and makes me smile so hard my cheeks hurt, and The Day I Became a God is written by my favorite anime writer ever. And we’ve also got some solid second-tier work from Warlords of Sigrdrifa, I’m Standing on a Million Lives, and Fire Force’s second season continuing from the summer. It’s been a while since we’ve had a real anime season after Covid pushed so many shows back, but damn is Fall 2020 delivering.
