Rockman.EXE Final Episode Review!

I ain’t afraid of no Gostler.

Finally, the last episode of the first season of the Rockman.EXE anime, the last episode before Axess changes almost everything!

You might not know this, but I am NOT a huge fan of Axess, it nearly destroys everything I’m used to and love from the first season, but I’ll talk about that some other time. Lets dive into this final adventure!

Who you’re gonna call?

The episode begins at night where Netto’s dad is carrying out an experiment. He created something called the “Dimensional core” that projects a grassy field in a parking lot, however, this is not a hologram since Dr. Hikari is able to touch a tree, claiming the experiment was a success.

He is basically God now.

The next morning we are at Netto’s house where his useless mom is humming Aki’s cheesy song while Netto is working on some kind of device he invented. The device happens to be a wireless plug that allows him to connect Rockman into a far away computer.

I’m not completely sure how this is suppose to work. I initially thought it was a way for Netto to plug-in to any computer withing range, but I think it just allows him to reconnect with Rockman if he is stranded in a computer, since it has been showed in the anime that he can’t send chips if he is not directly connected to the computer or server.

Netto gets a phone call from Commander Beef who gives him some worrying news about his father before the title card appears.

We then see Netto and his friends, along with Higure, Masa and Mariko-sensei for some reason, in a commercial plane, I guess Yaito decided to get cheap on us today.

Netto tells everyone that Commander Beef just told him that his dad had suddenly gone missing in Jawaii. He is obviously worried by this and the grown-ups try to cheer him up, with Higure saying that Commander Beef was probably lying, which angers Masa for some “unknown” reason.

Netto suddenly receives a call from Enzan who gives him more information about Dr. Hikari’s location and what he was working on.

I find it interesting that this last line was skipped and given to Rockman later on in the american version.

What is Enzan’s reason to help Netto all of a sudden?

Speaking of the dub, the line they gave to Yaito here was very awkward, by revealing that she likes Chaud/Enzan which is completely out of character.

We don’t go to commercials just yet, but we get the first screen saver we haven’t seen since the first part of the season.

Gotta love the sub’s sense of humor.

The next scene takes us to the shopping mall that has been taken over by some big roots, with a giant tree suddenly appearing on the roof. Netto and company are now on a helicopter where they are amazed at the sight of the tree. Rockman tells them that the tree is made out of cyber matter but functions just like a real tree.

While giving us the code for shrinking the Shield program. I used to think that was a chemical equation or something. XD

So after Mariko-sensei makes a bad joke, Yaito orders the pilot... Oh no! Why is SHE the pilot?!

Did we really need that gag to return?

Meanwhile, on another part of Jawaii, we see the Ex-WWW who have opened a second restaurant called Maha Niban and it seems there is an air of contentment around them because they all look happy and fulfilled.

Oh boy, I can tell something bad is gonna happen to them soon and I just can’t wait!

Back to our heroes, the inside of the mall looks like that planet from the Degoba system where Yoda lived, except the camera rotates around some of the plants that look three-dimensional but they’re actually bi-dimensional.

Which raises a question. How come these plants are bi-dimensional but Dr. Hikari was able to touch a solid tree at the start of this episode?

The group suddenly hear a familiar voice, it turns out to be Aki-chan who calls for Netto from a projection near the wall.

Aki tells them about Dr. Hikari’s experiment and how it started in the parking lot of the mall with the program he created called the Dimensional Core, however, viruses have taken over the Dimensional Core making the cyberworld in the mall unstable.

After Aki’s transmission is cut off, everyone decide to go to the parking lot, but not before Yaito reminds us how clumsy Sakurako is by telling her to stay put.

Seriously, what were you thinking, Yaito?

The group find an elevator that is still working, while they wait, Rush sees what looks like a pink female version of himself, presumably, another Mole virus. The girl virus lures him over and then... Does this.

What in the world was that?! This always confuse me. Is that how those viruses are supposed to be like? Is Rush like a tamed virus? Was it trying to eat him? Unfortunately that isn’t the case since Rush quickly hides behind Meiru who then notices that they are not alone.

What a silly question, Dekao. They are viruses, they are programmed to destroy everything in sight, whether it moves or not.

The group manages to escape through the elevator where Tohru says that the viruses probably materialized due to Dr. Hikari’s experiment. Just then, Metools begin to destroy the elevator.

So cute, yet, so deadly.

The group is forced to get off in the second floor with the Mettools right behind them, but they are suddenly stopped by a group of Bunny viruses. With viruses on both sides, Netto and friends pull an impossible stunt to avoid getting hit by the viruses attacks.

No uncomfortable line after that, Netto? When that happened in episode 29 you were pretty happy about it.

After the vines break and Higure is chased away by a Ghostler virus, Netto and his friends decide to use their Navis to stop the experiment from the cyberworld.

I remember this part having my full attention, if viruses where able to materialized in the real world, maybe the Navis would too, we might see something different for once.

o_o Well... That’s certainly different.

Apparently the cyberworld has become so unstable due to the experiment, that the Navis had nowhere to stand on, because that’s how computers work, right?

So after this, we get the second intermission with Rush running away from a Mettool, with some confusing messages from the subs.

One, what would Pharaohman’s first appearance have to do with anything? And two, isn’t it CTRL+Alt+Del? Because either way, DON’T DO IT!

None of the PETs can find the Navis, so Netto takes out his WiFi device and says how it is connected to Rockman, and can tell Netto if there is a Bluetooh-I mean, if Rockman is within range.

Then what was the point of building that thing?

With the Navis missing, the group have to find another solution, but before they can think of something, they are surprised by a Handi virus, and during the confusion, a Magma Dragon virus kidnaps Mariko-sensei with Masa running after it. Netto and friends are then ambushed by a Powei virus who chases them.

While trying to get away from the virus, Meiru trips (because of course she has to trip), Netto goes back for her and gets her out of the way just in time.

The virus breaks a water fountain and the splash deletes it giving Netto an idea of how to fight the viruses.

Meanwhile, we find the Navis walking around an area that looks like the inside of a tree. Since they have no idea where they are or where they’re going, they start to lose hope until Aki-chan appears before them with the compression code for Fast Gauge because we need to speed things up.

We return to Netto and friends who have found Gabgom’s department store that Yaito mentioned back on the plane, where they are all suiting up for some Live Action Virus Busting or LAVB.

So we get a Ghost Buster tribute, but instead of high tech gadgets, our heroes have water guns.

The boys cover an area of the mall shooting water at the viruses to delete them. Rush is also helping out (Even though we know he has a virus summoning ability), and we get one last scene with the weird female Rush virus before she is deleted with the water; but I still have one question in mind.

The girls cover another area where Yaito is riding a mini tank that fires water balloons.

She had a bazooka in another episode so this doesn’t surprise me.

Then we get this quick scene of Masa-san changing into Commander Beef in a dressing room and attempting to save Mariko-sensei from the Magma Dragon.

As expected, it didn’t work.

After this, the Magma Dragon lands and is ready to eat Mariko-sensei or something, but the boys appear to save her. Since the Magma Dragon is big, it takes a lot of water to finally delete it. They reunite with Mariko who asks if everyone is alright.

Wow, that’s cold, Netto. I know it’s just a Gostler, but a materialized virus is still pretty dangerous, except for Rush.

We then get the final commercial break that omits the second part, something the subs kindly reminds us of.

I guess it’s fair since we saw chibi Blues twice in the last episode.

We return with the Navis who finally see the exit.

“Hurry just like a Fast Gauge!”

Back in the real world, our heroes arrive in the parking lot basement where they find the Dimensional core under a gigantic tree, but before they can think of how to fix it, they are surprised by a very big cameo from the game.

The Life Virus!

Of course the anime leaves the final boss of the first game for the final episode, and it is even more intimidating than in the game.

Turns out the powerful Life virus is the one responsible for making the program unstable. Since the boys are the only ones with water tanks for some reason now, they shoot water at the Life Virus, but because it is so humongous, their attacks are ineffective and they quickly run out of water.

With no more water, Netto and friends wait fearfully as the Life virus approaches them, but just then, Netto’s wireless device starts to react.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! FINALLY!

After 55 episodes, Rockman finally appears in the real world!

The rest of the Navis appear soon after, giving Meiru and the others my exact reaction to this scene.

But I have no idea why this shot was skipped in the dub.

The Life virus attacks and the Navis fight back.

Unfortunately, their combined attacks are not enough to delete the Life virus, so Netto connects his PET to the wireless device in order to send Battle Chips to Rockman.

Now, if you’ve been taking screenshots of the episode like me, you’ll notice that there are quite a few recycled shots and animation errors, like Netto’s slot-in scenes with his regular cloths except that they were painted over to look like the outfit he’s wearing.

And this reused shot from episode 51, since it’s the wrong chip and the background is from the WWW lair.

Kanketsen is Fountain, a chip that normally can only be used with an aqua element Style Change.

Speaking of said Style Change, Netto somehow activates the Aqua Custom Style without the Extra code to finish off the Life virus with the Mega Deus Ex Maquina burst!

Now it’s the right chip, but still the wrong background.

Once the Life virus is deleted, the Dimensional core stabilizes and all the other plants, trees, and even the Net Navis return to the cyberworld.

With everything back to normal, the group find Netto’s dad who was sleeping the whole time, and the ending music starts to play in the background along with the credits.

Netto wakes him up by pulling his ear, and then he has this weird formal exchange with Mariko-sensei.

No questions about why your son’s school teacher is with them in the artificial park you created in a mall in Jawaii?

Now, this part might be a little infuriating since Netto’s dad had no idea that the experiment was corrupted by a Live virus, how it took over the shopping mall, and how everyone was worried about him since they didn’t hear from him in a very long time, but the upbeat ending music kinda makes you realize that this is not suppose to be taken seriously.

The worst part is that Dr. Hikari just straight up leaves Netto behind while he goes back home to Japan in his weird flying van, something I would expect from Yaito.

I guess it’s a good thing the dub changed his lines to avoid making him feel like a jerk. What does he say instead? Well, its kinda of spoiler for what happens next.

Rockman and the other Navis materializing in the real world, and the Ex-WWW is attacked by a giant tree... I should feel satisfied, but not really.

My final thoughts?

Wow, once again the show plays with my emotions by finally making Rockman and the other Navis appear in the real world but it doesn’t last long and it doesn’t feel as meaningful as it should be. The whole episode is treated like a filler episode rather that an important plot point for the next season. During that time, and also because Axess was never dubbed in Latin America, I never knew that they were gonna use the Dimensional Core as the basis for the Dimensional Area in the next season.

Speaking of Axess, it looked like they weren’t even planning on making another season after this, but they just had to because of the forth game that would be released for December of 2003. This episode premiered in March of 2003 while Axess started in October of the same year, that means that the producers had to hire a whole new team of writers and animators to work on Axess in the course of 7 months, because the feeling of the new season is almost completely different from the first two, and that is why the first seasons will remain in my heart while having mixed feelings towards Axess.

The idea of Netto suddenly being an inventor in this episode is a cheap way to introduce the Wireless device he gets from Meiru in BN2.

Only to have it stuck forever on the other side of a room when confronting Princess Pride who had destroy part of the floor.

Battle Network logic.

Before ending this review I have to thank WolfPack Productions and the other groups who subbed these episodes, specifically the former because they made their own credits after this episode.

And thanks to them, not only did I discover that Higure and Numberman are played by the same voice actor, but Coloredman too.

Worth It Chapter 7- Lost & Found in Darkness

Summary: Joseph has to go to work, so he lets Caesar relax at home with some nice music..and a blindfold..everything has a catch, doesn’t it?

Note: This chapter contains some mental manipulation/hypnosis that the main character is unaware of. Just a warning in case that makes anyone uncomfortable.

Caesar glared at Joseph and moved as far away as possible on the bed. “Absolutely not.”

Joseph heaved an exasperated sigh, hands still held out with the black silk blindfold and wireless earbuds. “Look, I don’t like it that much either, Caesar, but we don’t have too many options on this one.”

“Oh, I’m sure I could think of PLENTY of other options!” Caesar snapped back at him.

Joseph had come back into the room after breakfast that morning and explained that he had only been granted a few days off of work to get moved in and that he had to go in today. He went on to say that he didn’t want Caesar to “freak out” while he was gone and spend the whole day trying to get out of the chains and possibly hurt himself in the process. He tried to reassure Caesar by saying that being blindfolded would make the time go by faster, maybe even letting him fall asleep for a while, and that the music was a relaxing mix to help keep him calm.

Caesar vehemently refused.

Joseph transferred the blindfold to his other hand and tiredly rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. “Yeah, I’m sure you could, but I don’t think any of them are gonna work out for me.” He lowered his hand again and his look had turned serious. His eyes had that coldness that sent just as many shivers down Caesar’s spine as the manic smiles did. “I’m going to give you two options on this, Caesar.” He held out the blindfold and earbuds in his one hand. “You can either let me put these on you willingly to keep you calm while I’m out, or…” He reached his free hand around to his back pocket and pulled out a capped syringe that was already filled with liquid. “I can knock you out for the next eight hours. Your choice.”

Caesar’s eyes darted to the needle cautiously. After the incident with the coffee, Caesar had been leery of accepting any food from Joseph at first. Joseph had promised him that that was just an “unfortunate, necessary emergency”, and promised he would never drug him like that again. Up until this point he had been good on his word, but now it seemed he was deeming this as another “emergency”. He really didn’t want to do anything Joseph wanted him to do, but if he had to choose…

“Fine..” He said reluctantly. “I’ll take the blindfold..”

Joseph smiled, looking relieved by Caesar’s cooperation and set the syringe on top of the armoire. “Good.” He crawled onto the bed next to Caesar and gently took his chin in one hand so that he could tilt his head to the correct angle. Caesar’s body remained tense, not wanting to give Joseph any satisfaction from him agreeing to do something like this, but Joseph still managed to get the earbuds situated firmly into his ears. He then took some sort of elastic from the back of each bud and wrapped it around the back of his ears until it connected to the buds again, likely to keep them in place. After both earbuds were secured, Joseph picked up the blindfold and brought it close to Caesar’s face. Caesar flinched back a bit at the cool feeling of the silk against his face, but Joseph followed his movement. The last thing he saw before the silk was tied behind his head was Joseph’s calmly smiling face looking at him. “There. All set.” He felt Joseph kiss his cheek and leaned away quickly, making the other man chuckle. “Alright, alright, I’m leaving now. Don’t worry- I’ll be back soon. Love you, Caesar~<3”

He spoke like a man telling his wife to have a good day while he was at work. The thought made Caesar’s flesh crawl. Before he could dwell on it too long, though, music started playing through the earbuds and filled the dark emptiness with sound. He found himself somewhat relieved by the fact that the music was stuff that he actually liked and not just more of Joseph’s shitty pop music. Though that didn’t mean he was just going to sit there all day if he could help it- this was his first time alone in the house, he had to make the most of it and try to find a way out! (At least, he assumed he was actually alone- for all he knew, Joseph could still be standing in the room somewhere watching him, enjoying his struggles.)

Caesar tried tugging on the chains again. Still no luck with that.

He tried twisting his hands and feet at different angles to see if he could slip out. Still no luck there, either.

He started to get annoyed with the blindfold after a while and tried to get it off by rubbing his face against his shoulder, but the cloth was too smooth and he couldn’t get it to pinch or catch on his bare shoulder since he couldn’t raise his arms high enough. He also couldn’t get it to twist off by rubbing the back of his head against the bed or headboard because Joseph tied the knot really well without making it big enough to rub against anything the wrong way. He also found that he couldn’t get the earbuds out since between the elastic on them and the blindfold partially covering his ears that they were too secure to be moved.

He was stuck, might as well relax for a bit…

Caesar heaved an exhausted sigh and got comfortable on the bed (well, as comfortable as he could given the situation), mumbling to himself in Italian. “If I’m stuck, I might as well relax for a bit until that bastard gets back…”

It felt good to relax…

Caesar felt his tense muscles starting to relax. “Hmh…it does feel good to relax for once..”

He should relax more…

Caesar’s body relaxed more into the soft material of the bed, the plush comforter starting to feel like a large pillow his entire body was sinking into. “I really should relax more often..at least when he’s not around..”

Caesar soon found himself becoming calmer and calmer as he rested on the bed, all of the tension from the past few days leaving his body until all that was left was the calming darkness and the distant cadence of the music in his ears. He still wasn’t thrilled with the idea of being left like this, but if it was between lying pleasantly in the dark for a few hours or being doped up, he supposed he’d prefer to do this option more often.

The only problem was that being left like this gave him nothing to do but retreat into his own mind and think. Which, really, wasn’t so bad, but his own thoughts seemed to conflict with each other sometimes, making him unsure of how he really felt:

‘I can’t believe Joseph would do something like this. Sure, he’s always been a bit odd, but this is just crazy!’

‘Joseph loves me and wants to keep me safe.’

‘He certainly has a horrible way of showing it!’

‘I should have given Joseph a chance…’

‘Okay, I know I shouldn’t have turned him down like that. That was cruel…God, did I really break him so badly that he..he snapped and felt like he had to do THIS? Is it MY fault my best friend’s gone insane?’

‘Joseph would never hurt me.’

‘I know he wouldn’t hurt me. He may be a big brute, but he’s always been gentle. Even when we sparred or wrestled, he was always careful not to hurt me. Still..just because he won’t hurt me doesn’t mean I’m safe. He’s unstable right now. What if he snaps even worse and decides to kill me? Or himself? Or both of us?’

‘If I’m happy, Joseph will be happy too. Joseph wants me to be happy.’

‘It’s kind of hard to be happy in this situation. Even if he wants me to, how can I be happy locked up like this?’

‘The locks are comfortable because Joseph loves me.’

‘At least the chains are comfortable. He put a lot of thought into this. He left me room to move so I wouldn’t get sore or stiff..he even padded the shackles so they wouldn’t hurt me…Fine, okay, so maybe he does love me in his own weird, insane way.’

‘I am safe here. This home is safe.’

‘I suppose I am safe here. For now..’

‘This is my home, too. Joseph wants me to enjoy it. I should see the rest of it with him.’

‘He does seem interested in getting me out of this room. I guess I could take him up on that offer. If I spot a way out, then I can make a plan to escape later. If I don’t, at least it will give me a chance to move around more and will keep him happy enough that he, hopefully, won’t snap and kill both of us…’

‘I do still care about Joseph.’

‘………’

That last thought left him feeling conflicted.

Did he really still care about Joseph, even after what he did to him? Sure, he had turned him down before, but that was because he didn’t want to lose his best friend. Because, in the end, that’s what Joseph was- his closest friend in the world. The most important person to him. As much as he hadn’t wanted to admit before- both to himself and to Joseph- Joseph had been right about one thing: Other than Joseph, there weren’t too many people that would miss him or care enough to go looking for him if he were gone. Joseph was loyal, protective, and always there for the few people he cared about. Those were traits he had valued and part of what drew him to Joseph in the first place. But did he still feel the same way now?

As he thought it over, he did realize that all of his thoughts on escape always revolved around just running away. Never once had he even CONSIDERED killing or even harming Joseph other than the desire to punch him occasionally. Logically, if he could get free of the chains while Joseph was still in the house, then he would have to fight him in order to gain his freedom. Hell, killing him would be the easiest way to insure his escape. But..he felt like he couldn’t do that. Joseph was crazy, without a doubt, but he hadn’t harmed Caesar in anyway. He hadn’t beaten him, or starved him, or forced himself on him, or even insulted him. The way Caesar saw it, Joseph was just sick. He needed HELP. He didn’t deserve to be maimed or killed just because he wasn’t right in the head.

At the thought of Joseph being hurt, or worse, Caesar felt a tug on his heart strings and realized that, yes, deep down, he did still care about Joseph.

Just as he was starting to accept this unfortunate fact, he heard muffled sounds from somewhere beyond his dark, melodic world. Then, the music stopped and he slowly started to come back to himself.

He felt a dip in the bed and tried to sit up and move away, but a familiar voice called out to him. “Woah, easy, Caesar- it’s just me.” Then he felt familiar hands on the sides of his head as they undid the blindfold. The cool silk fell away and Caesar opened his eyes, blinking until the blurriness subsided and he was left with a view of Joseph’s smiling face right in front of him- the look matching the same one he had while tying the blindfold earlier. “Hey there, Caesarino- did ya miss me?” He grinned as he undid the elastic and carefully pulled out the earbuds.

“Hardly..” Caesar turned his head away slightly and looked out the windows in front of him, noting that time had, indeed, passed since Joseph had left early that morning and the sun was now beginning to set. He hadn’t even noticed that much time had gone by. Guess the blindfold and earbuds DID help with that…

Joseph stuck his tongue out at Caesar playfully as he put the earbuds and blindfold away in the drawer of the nightstand on his side of the bed. “Aw, so mean, Caesar!” He chuckled and also grabbed an MP3 player off of the top of the dresser, which was probably the source of the music earlier, and tossed that in the nightstand too. As he started to change out of his suit, he talked to Caesar about his day, with Caesar absently paying attention. His mind was still trying to sift through all of the thoughts he’d gone through while Joseph was gone. Maybe he should- “Yo! Earth to Caesar!”

He blinked in surprise when he looked up to see Joseph now leaning in front of him with his hands on his hips, his clothes changed to a pair of sweatpants and another tank top. From the pout he was receiving, Caesar figured that Joseph must have asked him something and he hadn’t heard him. “W-What?”

Joseph gave an over-exaggerated sigh and a fake, over-the-top roll of his eyes. “I knew you weren’t listening.” He looked back down at Caesar. “I asked if you’d rather have tomato soup with grilled cheese or meatball subs for dinner tonight- but I’m only gonna do the subs if you promise to behave and not do something stupid like choke to death on a meatball. Seriously, that would be the most horribly cliché way for you to die, y’know? I can see it in the obituaries: ‘Local Italian man chokes to death on a meatball- does his country proud!’ Ha! I’d seriously pay someone to print that!” He laughed at his own stupid joke for a minute before giving Caesar a nervous smile. “But, seriously, PLEASE don’t die like that, okay?”

Caesar thought it over for a bit before he sighed- it had been a while since he’d had a sandwich that wasn’t diced up like he was a toddler. “Fine. I won’t choke on them if you make the meatball subs.” He leaned back into the headboard and grumbled to himself. “Just don’t drown them in sauce like last time, damn it..”

Joseph smiled brightly and patted Caesar’s head. “You got it!” He stood up straight and turned to leave. “I’ll bring ‘em in when I’m done.”

Caesar couldn’t explain why he did what he did, but, when Joseph started to take a step away, Caesar felt himself reach out and grab Joseph’s wrist before he could get too far away. “Wait..!”

Joseph instantly stopped and looked back at him, surprise and confusion clearly written all over his face. “Caesar? What is it?”

Caesar felt his cheeks heat up a bit. Crap! He didn’t mean to sound so desperate just then. He had to think of something fast! “It’s just..I…” A thought came to him and he let go of Joseph’s wrist and he folded his hands over his knees in an attempt to look casual. “Is there a place to sit in the kitchen? I..want to make sure you don’t screw up the food with your shitty American-style cooking…”

Joseph took a minute to process this, his eyes widening. “You mean..you..want to come to the kitchen with me..?” At a reluctant nod from Caesar, Joseph’s eyes practically sparkled and a huge, excited smile looked like it would split his face in two. “Caesar!” He yelled excitedly and quickly wrapped his arms tightly around the embarrassed Italian in a bone-crushing hug. “Of course you can! OH MY GOD! I’ve been WAITING to show you the kitchen! Its soooo COOL! You’re gonna love it!”

Caesar tried to squirm away from the overly-excited man’s hug, scowling at him. “I can’t see it if you break my ribs, idiota! Hurry up! I’m already hungry!”

Joseph let him go, still smiling like he’d won the world’s biggest lottery. “Oh! Right, sorry, my bad!” He reached down and undid the locked hooks on the bed, leaving the chains on Caesar’s wrists but taking off the ones on his legs. Joseph then took the chains attached to Caesar’s wrist shackles and wrapped them around his left hand a few times, ensuring that Caesar couldn’t get loose with the tight hold Joseph had on them. “Come on, I’ll show you the rest of the house on the way!” He helped Caesar off of the bed and led him out of the bedroom.

As Caesar took his first steps out of the bedroom since arriving in the house, he found himself alternating between looking around at the various rooms and halls they went through and looking at and listening to Joseph’s excited explanations of everything he saw. He looked so happy, almost reminding Caesar of a puppy with a wagging tail.

‘Heh…cute…’

Caesar blinked in surprise at himself, his heart stopping for half a second as he realized what he’d just thought. Shit..he hoped that was just a passing thing…

Videostrong Technology Co. Ltd. was founded in 1998. They produce a line of android based TV boxes and dongles, as well as hybrid boxes. Hybrid boxes are TV boxes which incorporate other abilities such as DVB tuners of different standards (T2, S2, ATSC and others) as well as capabilities such as HDTV recording (PVR).

KI Plus is one of the latest models which Videostrong put out, and they have delayed its release to get a more stable firmware working – which is appreciated. The advantages of KI Plus (aside from the Amlogic S905 chipset): integrated DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV tuners. Those allow reception of over-the-air standard and high definition digital TV transmissions, where available.

What’s in the Box?

As can be seen both in the unboxing video and the photo below, the package is pretty standard, with the DC power adapter, HDMI 2.0 cable, and standard IR remote control and user manual. It contain most all of what you’ll need, aside from a Digital TV antenna, which is not included.

The KI Plus is a rectangle made of black plastic, with the model name printed in white letters on top of it. On the left we can see the indication LED/Power button. The KI Plus can also be turned off and on from the included Remote control.

Benchmarks and Testing

All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:

Antutu Benchmark

The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. Antutu 6.0.1 crashed at the end of each run, although it did complete it. I also experienced sound artifacts (fast chirping sound) during the 3d testing, where music was supposed to be playing in the background. The results of the tests draw a mixed picture, where in the older 5.7.3 version, the box takes the very last spot of the S905 based boxes, but in the newer 6.0.1 version, it sits pretty in the middle.

GPU Mark Benchmark

GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. Both graphs shows the same grim picture: This device is not optimized for gaming or 3d heavy tasks. In both it takes the place before last, coming only before the weakest device I tested so far.

A1 SD Benchmark

A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). Here we see a mixed picture again, with the storage showing low results (in the last 4 places) while the RAM speed shows its muscle as it settles in the 4th place!

PC Mark Benchmark

The PC Mark benchmark test suite gives a more task/day oriented picture of performance. Things like photo editing, web browsing and video playback are tested. The KI Plus takes a nice middle seat as it shows it is more than capable at performing day-to-day android tasks.

3D Mark Benchmark

3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). Interestingly, unlike GPUMark, 3dmark shows the KI Plus a medium score that makes it a descent box for casual gaming. This is supported by actual gaming I tested as mentioned later.

There seems to be room for improvement in the playback capability of the KI Plus. Mostly when it comes to Kodi, as I experienced some instability with the customized version that comes pre-installed on the KI Plus. Bear in mind, this is an early production sample, and the device is not widely available.

I experienced some Kodi crashes out to the android desktop (or app list) and noticed that the KI Plus does not actually retain programs in its memory (most likely to keep better performance, as there is no task killer/memory cleaning app) – so if you would switch from Kodi out to the desktop (“Home” button on the remote), it will actually force close the app, and when you re-open Kodi, it will go through the initial splash screen and content update procedure again.

I also noticed that 10 Bit TS files do not play (at all) inside Kodi. I have tried Kodi 15.2 official release, Kodi 16 Beta 5, and SPMC 15. All had issues playing back content on this device, and one would not show video playback at all (16 Beta 5). The 10 bit content did play correctly in the included movieplayer app – but only locally as the app does not have network connectivity on its own.

This leads me to believe that the KI Plus needs some thorough work in regard to Kodi compatibility and stability.

Digital TV performance

This is a special addition, as this box supports DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV protocols, and does it well. This capability is accessible both from the app list, and from the remote by pressing a button labeled “DTV”.

It uses a special app that comes pre-installed, called “DTV”. Upon opening the app (each and every time) you’re presented by the choice of one of the tuners: DVB-S2 or DVB-T2.

You’re also presented, only on the first time, with the option of scanning for channels. You’ll need to make sure you get an external antenna (not included in the package) or have an existing digital TV antenna at hand. The scanning process was fast, and reception was quite great, even if I left the small antenna I used in the room rather than placing it outside the near window.

Picture and sound quality are both great, especially in HD, but standard SD quality is good and stable as well. Recording is possible – either to the (Micro)SD card, or to an external USB drive. This can be set in the app settings, and record schedules can be set from the EPG by clicking on the desired program to set recording, or within a program – clicking on the remote control record button to initiate. I have successfully recorded a test segment of a Full HD program.

I did notice two issues: the first being that certain HD channels could not produce sound, even though they recognized the audio track (usually AC3 encoding), and the second – de-synchronization between the video and the audio. The audio did slowly catch up with the video in time.

Issues and bugs

Kodi Add-ons did not always install properly at first time each time. Some required repeat attempts to get installed.

Google play games service crashes upon running, and so does not function correctly inside games.

Volume and/or information overlay comes up on kodi while playing back video without user interaction, occasionally.

10 mb bug is present. When attaching big capacity USB drives, they show as 10 mb drives, and do not allow file operations other than read.

Antutu 6.0.1 crashes out at the end of testing, and produces a weak chirping sound during 3d tests (when there’s supposed to be background music).

Digital TV – AC3 audio on some HD channels would not play sound.

The pre-installed Kodi 15.2 custom version proved unstable as it crashed out to the desktop several times, mostly when stopping playback, but a couple of times just while navigating the menu.

Other Kodi/SPMC versions did not work well on this box. They either showed a quarter screen playback image, no image at all, or had other issues.

Network performance

Network performance has been tested using Speedtest.net Internet speed measuring app, in WiFi and in Wired mode. My Internet connection is 200 Mbit Symmetric Fibre connection. The included WiFi is 2.4 GHz only (802.11n) and so is quite limited. Wired speed is good:

Gaming performance

I use an application called “GameBench” to measure frame rate and resource usage in games. The application did crash during testing, but I was able to run it long enough to gather resource usage information:

Asphalt 8 Airborne – a 3d graphic intensive racing game. The game run fine, but not completely smooth.

Angry Birds 2 – a popular 2d action game. Runs smoothly most of the time, with bits of slowdown both in-game and in menus.

Walking War Robots – an online robot warfare game that requires a game-pad (I don’t have a game-pad). WWR ran quite smoothly, but did produce an annoying static or distortion sound all through playing.

Conclusions

Did I like it? Yes, I did. The KI Plus is a interesting and good contender in the s905 crowded scene. The (now) standard s905 related issues are expected to be resolved in coming firmware updates, and this box offers out-of-the-box rooting (although I advise to install SuperSu to make the most of it). And then there’s the built-in Digital TV support. For many Kodi enthusiasts this box will give an almost perfect all-around solution which gives them crisp HD terrestrial digital channels which do not depend on internet availability on top of the good video decoding ability offered by the Amlogic S905 chipset.

Would I recommend it? Definitely. It has a few issues to patch up, but all in all it’s a great combined solution for a very good price.

Warning: This Blog contains a serious amount of techy nerdiness, and (more scarily) me attempting some DIY.

OK, so I’ve had my new whizzy Amp, sorry ‘AV Receiver’ for just about 12 months now, and recently re-cabled it all so that it took over the sound processing from the TV and the DVD player. Why?, to take advantage of recent additional sound technologies including Dolby Atmos. Easy-peasy! and so far, so normal! But one niggling little techy-doubt remained as the we’d noticed that every so often, the BT Router had a major wobble causing the Amp AV Receiver to stutter when playing music via the ‘net or from the Home-server. Additionally, downloads to the TV were becoming a bit unreliable too. Finally, my latest techy purchase of the rather clever ChromeCast Ultra dongle was behaving very erratically and not living up to its promises.

They all had one thing in common - they were all wirelessly connected to the ‘net. After a longish chat with the boffins at BT, we concluded that their new, recently delivered shiny new router - the BT Smart Hub - wasn’t quite so smart at handling the numerous incoming net connections - both wired and wireless. BT muttered something about ‘BT Routers aren’t designed to handle more than about 8 wireless connections’ - so, in layman’s terms it was simply ‘overloading’ - perhaps another reason NOT to have kids… with Phones… and Tablets… and X Boxes as well! After a bit of reluctance on BT’s part, they agreed to send back my previous ‘outdated’ router - the previous generation BT HomeHub 5. Of course, it never arrived (thanks BT!) and after a few follow-up calls, two week later, a shiny new ‘old’ one finally turned-up.

After a major exercise in re-connecting all our wireless devices back to their old friend, things appeared to be much better. But I spoke too soon, and after about a week, wireless connections around the house started to drop-out again. On the plus-side however, at least the wired connections were now behaving.

So I concluded that it was just the wireless devices that couldn’t seem to hang on to their connection.

Then, in a moment of clarity (increasingly rare these days) I realised that a reasonably straightforward - and cheap - solution was possible! One that would reduce the number of wireless connections AND improve the stability of the whole network - Replace the unstable wireless devices’ connections with their wired equivalents.

So, specifically, I needed a wired connection for the:-

Samsung 4K TV

Samsung 4K DVD Player

Sky Q Box

Google Chromecast Ultra

Yamaha Amp AV Receiver

…but unfortunately, the HomeHub 5 was located nowhere near these devices (it’s never simple in this house!) and to make it even more challenging there wasn’t enough spare Ethernet sockets on the back of the Hub anyway, to feed all my devices.

Unmanaged Ethernet Switch (less than £20)

After a bit of research online, I realised that all I needed was a multi-port unmanaged Ethernet switch as well as what seemed like a healthy supply of Ethernet cabling to run around the outside of the house and some shortish cables for the devices themselves. I could have used the much simpler Powerline option, but they didn’t solve the problem.

Thanks to Mr Amazon, everything I needed was delivered more-or-less a few hours after I’d clicked on the order. That left just the following to-dos:-

Colour-code/label the switch ports and cables

Dress-rehearse all the connections

Drill three holes in the side of the house - one near the router, one near the TV/Sky Q Box/DVD Player and finally, one near the AV Receiver

Laying the cable round the perimeter of the house from the Router to the Switch and re-cable/connect the devices

Test everything!

11th February: Dress Rehearsal The Lounge looked like a death-trap with cables strewn all over the place. The area near the TV was especially dangerous with the TV and DVD unit out so I could get round the back to make the connections. Luckily, Ann was away, and the operation went smoothly with every device was working as it should. I cleared up the cables ready for the live event.

15th February: Drilling the Holes I needed a very (very) wide drill bit for this, and a real ‘big-boy’ drill - neither of which I own. Step-forward Mick, our local Sparks with son and heir, Ash who completed the job in record time - cheers Guys!

16th February: Laying the Cable Actually, this turned out to be the most hazardous part of the job - it even drew blood! Where the hole from the Router protruded outside the house, it just happened to coincide with the thickest, thorniest rose bush we own. Trying to get my hands behind it without ‘testing’ the thorns was impossible - as a result, there was literally blood on my hands!

All that was left to do was to buy some extra cable clips to tidy everything up.

17th February: Testing In spite of my industrial injury, adding the cable clips was a simple task - now it looks a lot tidier. More importantly perhaps, I’m pleased to say that it’s all been VERY worthwhile. Sky downloads are now much more stable (and faster too!), GoogleCast is rock-solid, and there’s no more drop-outs with our streamed music.

Job done! Total cost was less than £50 (including the plasters!)
