freemason tower by Tyler Wilson Via Flickr: Camera: Canon AF35M Film: Seattle Filmworks, expired Developed, Arista C41 kit These are from an old roll of Seattle Filmworks film. I bought it in a lot, and there was no date on it. Researching the film, I learned that it was scrap ends of kodak motion picture film and required ECN-2 process to develop. I read that you can develop this film in C-41 chemecals, but you will need to scrub off the protective carbon layer. I developed this using an Aritsa C-41 kit. When I took the film out of the developing tank, there was no carbon layer! The rinse water, deveoper and the Blix were normal colours when they came out of the tank, so it did not come off during deveoping. I'm guessing Seattle filmworks at one point was using normal C-41 film, and just told people it was a diffrent process so people would continue to mail it in for developing. Has anyone else had this experience?

TASHA ALHASSAN has walked on set. they’re a TWENTY-NINE year-old costume designer who’s been working at CHIMERA FILMWORKS for NINE MONTHS. they’re vain, you say? i’d like to think they’re more uninhibited. either way, catch them watching phantom of the opera (2004) — greta onieogu / she/her / heterosexual / cis female
Tumblr media
tws: cancer, death
Born on Christmas morning. Her family expected a boy, and one born a little bit later, so when Tasha arrived to this world, they were surprised and wildly unprepared. She was very much wanted and loved either way, but she lived in a baby blue room for the first few years of her life, until she had a voice to ask very much specifically for what she wanted. She chose the color of her walls, her furniture, her toys, her clothes, etc.
Although her mom was just as important for her, there was a special connection that Tasha had with her father, that only grew tighter as she grew older. It did not help that she started to realize her mother’s true intentions with the family. Sure, she loved Tasha with her entire life, but her interest with her husband was merely economic. Tasha’s father was a big time lawyer for celebrities and big profile cases like politicians and sportsmen, so they were a pretty well off family. and her mother LOVED that. Tasha was about thirteen when she found out her mother was cheating on her father, after getting home from school early- literally saw them in the act. It was traumatizing, and as close as she felt to her father, she could not keep it to herself. They got a divorce, her mother moved to Seattle, and to this day, Tasha still blames herself for it.
Her mother quickly married the guy she had been fucking for the past three years, and apparently, she found true love in him and a family with his daughter- now Tasha’s step sister. It didn’t sit right with Tasha, of course. She never quite liked the girl despite being well aware it was not her fault, but she liked even less her mother’s new husband. Tasha’s father was heartbroken, on the other side. He had grown up rich as well, which made him aware of his privileges, but there were very few ones when it came to social and romantic connections. People were not honest, let alone loyal when there is an economic interest in between. Tasha learned that as well, so she grew a tougher exterior, and as she got into her teen years, she turned into her high school’s Queen Bee. She was a cheerleader, the top of her class and prom queen on top of that.
Tasha gained a lot of confidence around boys, and a lot of power around girls, but none of this mattered when she moved to New York to follow her dreams of becoming a fashion designer. She was accepted into Parsons, though to this day she is not sure if her last name had something to do with it- it didn’t really matter though. She would never throw away the opportunity to live her dreams. But living in New York was harder than she thought.
Back in her hometown, in the area where she lived, she was Queen Bee. She reigned the social circles, organized the parties, but in New York, she was just another dreamer. Nobody knew her name, or what the house she grew up on looked like. And suddenly, she found herself almost completely alone. It was a tough time for her, but she managed to survive- created a small group of friends, and soon it was as if her old mean girl personality had gone to rehab. Tasha was more down to earth, or at least sounded like it- the little voice in her brain would never stop judging people on a first impression. She was kinder, though.
And then reality hit. Her father called one day- didn’t want to scare her but he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. It was not treatable- he had only a few months. No, no need to come back home- please… but Tasha knew he wanted her to come home. She subleased her apartment, put his dream on a temporary pause, and moved back home to be with her father for however long he had left. He passed away almost one full year later. He had lived against the odds, but it had not been enough time for Tasha to properly say goodbye to him. One thing was clear, though- even if the giant house was on her name, she could not keep it with so many memories living inside those walls, but she didn’t feel quite ready to move back to New York.
She rented a small apartment in downtown Vancouver, where she could be closer to civilization, stores and everything that could put her career on the move. Through a friend of a friend, she ended up working as a costume assistant for a big movie that shot in town, and that’s how she got involved with the movie industry. It’s not exactly selling her own clothes, but she likes being included and involved in such an important business that she has also loved her entire life.
Tasha is usually pretty charming. She is very social and thrives in groups and big parties. She is very elegant in the way she dresses, even if she’s just going to the store. She thinks she can meet the love of her life in every corner. When it comes to friends, she is loyal to the very few ones she will let in. Romance, however, doesn’t come easy for her. She’s a total flirt, and she is very good at getting what she wants, but her heart has a very large stone wall around it.
Possible connections include exes (messy, good terms, all kinds), friends with benefits, hook ups & booty calls, flirtationships. friendships of all kinds- give me a girl gang, but also give me that male best friend she can count on. coworkers, neighbors, clients, people she’s designed dresses for, etc....

The Night Is Young
This is the sequel to The Geeks Get The Girls. Dipper and Wendy Have been dating for a month when she tells him that her roommate is co-hosting a Halloween party. Dipper uses this info to plan a surprise for Wendy.
Wednesday October 14th, 2020
Tanoak Terrace Apartments
Apartment 42
Beaverton, OR
“Dude, don’t go through that door!” Wendy called out at the television screen. She then stuffed a handful of popcorn into her mouth.
“Come on, it’s b-movie horror 101. When your friends start dying you don’t separate and you definitely don’t go through doors with blood on them.”, Dipper said as he walked back into the living room with a couple cans of Pitt Cola.
He sat down beside her on the sofa and placed and arm around her. As he did she snuggled into the embrace.
“So Halloween’s coming up,” Wendy started as she opened her can of Pitt and took a drink.
“Yeah?”  Dipper prompted her to continue, the movie half forgotten with her in his arms.
“And I remember that it used to be you and your sister’s favorite holiday,” She continued.
“Uh-huh,” He murmured as he took a sip of his cola.
“Well Lacey, my roommate, is co-hosting a Halloween party and she invited us. She wants to meet the guy who broke the ‘Corduroy Curse’ as she called it.” she said with a smirk.
“Corduroy Curse?” Dipper asked confused.
“Yeah, she kept setting me up with guys during our freshman year and none of them lasted more than the first date. Guess I just kept looking till I found what I wanted.” Wendy replied as she leaned her head back and kissed Dipper on his chin.
“Well I’m glad you found me when you did,” Dipper said as he leaned over and kissed her nose.
“Well actually, I have her to thank for that even.” Wendy said as she settled back into her snuggled position.
“Oh?”
“Yeah, she had been at a conference for her sorority and ran into Pacifica. When Paz mentioned that she was originally from Gravity Falls, Lacey remembered me mentioning it before. Lacey said she thought that her roommate was from there and told Paz my name. Paz asked her to call me so we could talk. And the rest is history.” she said before she grabbed some more popcorn and popped it into her mouth.
“That explains it, that has been bugging me a lil bit. But I definitely didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth.” Dipper replied as he prepared to take a drink.
“So?” she queried.
“So what?’ he asked back.
She looked up at him and asked, “Do you want to go?”
With a smile and a twinkle in his eye he said, “If you do, then of course.”
“Are you sure? It’s a costume event.” Wendy said, remembering his reluctance at dressing up back when they were younger.
He perked up a bit at this, “Even better, if you’ll let me I’m sure I can come up with a great couple’s costumes set if you want.”
“You mean Mabel will come up with a great couple’s set of costumes.” Wendy said as she jokingly elbowed him in the ribs.
“Hey now, I’ll have you know I came up with at least half of our costume ideas in Mabel’s scrapbook.” Dipper said defensively as he jokingly rubbed where she had elbowed. He then added, “Of course she would always make them.”
“Well we could just get something from a store.” she teased.
He physically flinched at the suggestion, “No thank you. Have you seen those outfits. Lord, no. Ninety percent of those ‘costumes’ are nothing more than an excuse to show off skin.”
“I get you. Not that I wouldn’t mind seeing you in one of those thong outfits.” he started sputtering as she finished and she burst out laughing.
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” he managed to get out despite his flustered sputtering.
“Yep, deep down you’re still the same sweet, shy, dork I fell for all those years ago.”  and with that she pulled him into a kiss.

The Spiced Panda Buffet
Beaverton, OR
“And so that’s the situation sis,” Dipper said before he took a bite of his sweet n sour drenched rice.
“So you asked me to make the hour drive, to leave Pacifica in the dark, and make it sound like an end of the world type crisis all because your girlfriend wants to go to a halloween party as a couple.” Mabel said after she had finished her third crab rangoon since he had begun. “Ok, sounds like fun. Any ideas?”
“Well I want it to be a romantic costume set. Possibly Romeo and Juliet.” Dipper said as he gathered up another spoon full of sweet n sour rice, ignoring his chicken. His chopsticks lain to the side of his plate as he ate the soupy concoction.
“Too cliche, how about Bonnie and Clyde. Talk about a ride or die couple.” Mabel tried. She was looking at her plate and trying to decide if she wanted to eat her schezwan barbecue or orange chicken first.
“Uhm, I dunno. I’m not sure how I’d feel with us carrying around guns, especially on a campus. How about Arthur and Guinevere?” He said before finally eating a piece of the chicken from his sweet n sour plate.
“Well, wait a minute. You said it was her roommate that’s throwing the party right?” She asked. Once he nodded in affirmation she continued, “Then nope. No can do, broseph. Paz and I are going to that party as Lancelot and Guinevere. We got invited by Lacey after Paz helped her get seats to a Seattle playoff game for her dad’s birthday. I can’t risk Wendy’s Guinevere out shining Paz’s. Also the party is supposed to be a big bonfire get together, no wait a minute that’s not right. Think, think. Ok. I got it. it’s gonna be at the other co-host’s family farm and they were going to have a bonfire with it so you wouldn’t have to worry about the gun issue, but I totally understand. Maybe you could do one of the Mizmey Princesses couples, like Echo & Narcissus or Othello & Desdemona.”
“Nah, she’s still too much of a tomboy for that. Mizmey always makes their princesses be way too girly. I almost think it needs to be something where she can be seen as my equal or even superior.” he pauses there and absentmindedly shuffled the chicken and rice on his plate. After a moment he he saw that somehow he had separated the dishes so they had some familiar paths in between them. Routes he hadn’t traveled in years, the paths in the woods of Gravity Falls. Including the one to Wendy’s house. The woods where they sure used to have fun. “Wait a minute, I got it. Robin Hood and Marian.”
“But isn’t Marian a Mizney Princess?” Mabel said around a mouth full of orange chicken.
“Well yes, but not the one I was thinking about. I’m talking about the one from the Sherwood television series. Marian was just as much part of Robin’s band as Little John. And she dresses similar to the rest also, so breeches and such. See.” He pulled out his phone and looked up pictures from the series to show her what he meant.
“Ok, I think I can pull this off fairly easily. I’ll need to meet with Wendy to get her measurements of course.” Mabel said as she pulled a notepad out from her purse. As she wrote she continued, “And I have a friend in the costuming department that should be able to help get the two of you jerkins that fit properly.”
“Can’t you just make them?” He asked as he looked over the table at what she was writing. Once he got a better look he realized that she had not only written down the show name and the website he had just showed her, she had already started sketching out the pieces needed for the costume.
“Not all of them bro-bro, I may be a mistress of fabric but leather is out of my wheelhouse.” she explained as she continued sketching. Pausing she took a bite of her barbeque before she asked. "Do you want to keep the traditional Errol Flynn hat?”
“Yeah, it’s iconic.”
“Hmm, how about I use the idea from the show as a basis but blend in stuff from other versions of the characters. I mean there’s the old black and white serials, the Flynn movies, the one with Azeem, the parody one, etc.” Mabel rambled on as she kept making notes.
“Oh, the parody movie. I loved that one.” Dipper replied with a smile, “The opening rap, the one guy stopping to pump up his shoes, the panty hose gags, the songs…”
After hearing her brother stop rambling caused Mabel to look up from her work. “What’s up Dip-Dop?”
“Well there is something else that I’ve been thinking about,” Dipper said looking down at his plate, somewhat avoiding his sisters eyes.
“Ok, what?” Mabel said putting down her pen and studied his face intently. She knew it must be something good as he was starting to blush and he hadn’t even said anything yet.
“Uhmm, as you know Wendy and I have been together for almost a month now. And you also know we haven’t exactly been chaste in that time.” Dipper went even redder as he said that.
Mabel smiled as she remembered the morning after her brother and his other first got back together. “Oh yeah, I remember seeing her in flagrante delicto half buried in your covers that that first morning. You certainly got lucky there broseph!”
“Yeah, well. Like I was saying, we’ve been together for over a month and,” he turned his head at this point blushing even more, “neither of us have said the L-word yet.”
“Don’t be a fool Dip, you told her that years ago.” Mabel said with a serious look on her face.
“That doesn’t really count sis,” Dipper said as he turned back towards Mabel, still red in the face. “I was still just a kid. Look let’s not get off track. I’ve been wanting to tell her but I don’t want to do it during a make out session or something heavier. So this party will be the perfect chance and I think I have a plan.”
“Uhmm, Dipingham.” She said with a wane smile, “You don’t usually have a good track record when it comes to plans and Wendy.”
“Well this party is where it’s gonna change.” he had a gleam in his eye that he hadn’t had for awhile (since around the time he had given up on his dream of filmwork) and Mabel had missed it “Cause really there’s only a couple items needed for this plan; an instrumental recording of the song, speakers, and a couple of back up singers.”
“Now where could we find you back up singers,” Mabel started till she saw Dipper give her a ‘You’re not fooling anyone’ look, “Oh you know I’m just kidding you, of course I’ll talk Paz into it.”
“Great, now here’s the plan.” Dipper said as he leaned in closer.

Gladden Farms
Beaverton, OR
Our young couple have just arrived at the party after parking his truck. They had noticed that there were only about a dozen or so cars parked in the drive. Wendy had said that Lacey told her they weren’t inviting that many people.
He was dressed in a pair of cedar colored breeches, a dark hunter green leather jerkin worn over a dusty tan tunic, and the Robin Hood hat in the same hunter green. On his back were a quiver and real wooden longbow that Wendy had insisted on getting from her dad once her told her of the costume idea. And finally he had a stage scabbard on his hip. Wendy was in a pair of forest green breeches, a ladies cut version of the jerkin Dipper was wearing, and a white tunic. Like dipper she sported a quiver, longbow, and scabbard. Her hair was pulled back in a gentle braid.
The door to the farmhouse was opened by a by a somewhat mousy looking brunette, dressed as a stereotypical nerd. “Wendy, glad you came.”
The brunette pulled Wendy into a hug. As she was released, Wendy said “Hey Clarissa, thanks for inviting us.”
“No problem, so is this the curse breaker?” Clarissa asked as she eyed Dipper up and down.
“Yeah. This is my boyfriend Dipper.” Wendy said as she went about introducing the two, “Dipper this is Clarissa. She’s one of our hosts this evening and one of Lacey’s Theta Sigma sisters.”
“Good to meet you,” Dipper said as he shook Clarissa’s hand, “I like your Tri-Lamb outfit.”
“Finally, someone who gets it. So far most of the guests have called me Leonard, Sheldon, or Leslie.” Clarissa said shaking her head.
“Well I guess it takes a nerd to know a nerd.” Dipper said with a smile.
“Ok, I like this guy.” Clarissa said to Wendy, “Lacey was in by the refreshment table the last I saw her.”
“Thanks.” Wendy said as she and Dipper headed into the party
As they walked through the farmhouse Dipper took stock in their fellow party goers. There really were only about a two dozen people at the party with a sixty/forty slant in the female to male ratio. Surprisingly there were really only two ‘sexy’ costumes and the Gladiator and the Cowboy seemed to be together. At least he doesn’t have to worry about Pacifica and his sister being out of place here.
Truth be told he never was a party type but he planned having as much fun as possible with Wendy. The plan was to start the song sometime after the party moves outside for the bonfire.
As they walk up to the snack table a pair of mocha colored hands cover Wendy’s eyes. “Guess who?”
“Well considering only three people are foolish enough to do this and I’m holding one of their hands and another is gonna be in armor, I’m gonna say Lacey.” Wendy said before the hands dropped.
When they turned Dipper saw a mocha skinned beauty dressed as a calico cat. She gave him a once over (including an appraising walk around) before she  turned to Wendy and remarked, “So this is him? Sheesh girl, if you had told me you into the bookish type I’d’ve had you hooked up ages ago.”
“Nah, this one is special. Ain’t another like him in the world.” Wendy said before she kissed Dipper on the cheek.
Lacey chuckled at his blush, “Man, this is too adorable. So what’s your name Loxley?”
Still blushing Dipper said “Everybody calls me Dipper.”
“Oh, I’m sure you do.” Lacey joked as she shot Dipper a wink.
“Lacey!” Wendy exclaimed as she chucked her roommates shoulder.
“Well, she hasn’t complained yet.” Dipper said with a little smirk as Wendy went as red as he had been and Lacey snickered at her reaction.
“Dipper!” Wendy marveled at what she just heard her normally quiet boyfriend say. He just leaned over and gave her a quick kiss.
“Ok. I like this guy,” Lacey said around her laughs, “Girl he’s a keeper.”
“Oy, I see you found my brother.” Mabel called out from behind them.
As they turned around they saw Mabel standing there in full chainmail armor, with her hair done up in a crown braid that led to braided tail, a blue tabard with a gold fleur de lis in the center, and a glorious blonde van dyke. Pacifica was beside her in a flowing regal purple gown with gold and silver inlay, her hair was plated and topped with a silver tiara. and a golden scepter.
“Mabel,” Dipper said as he walked over and gave her a hug. As he leaned near her ear he whispered, “Is it ready?”
“Yep, take the path to the left of the bonfire as you leave the farmhouse.” She whispered back before she released the hug.
“You guys look great,” Wendy commented, “Beautiful dress Pacifica, and Mabel I love the armor.”
“This old thing,” Mabel said as she attempted to twirl around as if she were showing off a dress. “It was just something I had laying around in my closet.”
“And she means that, it’s been on the floor of her closet since she helped the design costumes for the theater department’s production of MacBeth last year.” Pacifica remarked with a smirk.
“Well it was too great to be thrown away at the end of the production’s run.” Mabel smiled as she patted down her tabard.
Later That Night
Dipper and Wendy walked around the bonfire while the party went on around them. Dipper led them down the path Mabel described. When he got to the small clearing that was partially hidden he said, “You know Wendy, we’ve been together for almost two months now and I have something to tell you.”
Dipper called out to apparently no one, “The Night Is Young, B-flat.”
“Dip, what’s going on?” Wendy asked as suddenly music began to play.
“The night is young and you're so beautiful,” Dipper sung out as he looked into Wendy’s eyes.
Pacifica and Mabel walked into a nearby clearing and began to harmonize to the music.
“Here among the shadows, beautiful lady, open your heart.” Dipper swept his arm out to show they were currently in a shadowy part of the farmland.
“Oooooo” Mabel and Pacifica sung along to the harmony
“The scene is set, the breezes sing of it,” Dipper sang as he pulled Wendy into a hug.
“Oooooo”
“Can't you get into the swing of it, lady, when do we start?” the two of them spun around in a slow waltz like dance.
“Oooooo”
“When the lady is kissable,” he bent down and kissed the back of her hand, “and the evening is cool.”
“Oooooo”
“Any dream is permissible,” he place their hands over his heart, “in the heart of a fool.”
“Oooooo”
“The moon is high” he sung looking up to the sky before coming back down to her. He took his right hand and traced her jawline as he continued, “and you're so glamorous,”
“Oooooo”
“And if I seem over amorous, lady,” he leaned over and placed a kiss on her lips, “what can I do?”
“Oooooo”
“The night is young” Dipper paused here before he quietly said, “and I mean this from the bottom of my heart”
“I'm in love with you.” Dip finished up the song looking directly into her eyes.
“Dip,” Wendy said with her eyes beginning to mist up, “You didn’t have to go through such a production just to tell me that.”
“Oh I know, I just wanted the first time I told you that to be memorable.” Dipper said a little more shyly than he wanted.
“And it was, but this isn’t the first time you told me. Remember.” She said with a smile on her lips.
“Yeah but…” was all he got out before her lips met his. And while the party, the bonfire, heck even the world seemed to disappear he did hear ‘I Told You!’ from somewhere in the distance.
Sometime later when they finally came up for air Wendy whispered to him, “I love you too, dork.”

Socks Behind the Lens: Niq
I was so excited to write this profile of Niq, our primary product photographer (and Sock Dreams founder!). It’s her style that defined the type of product photography we do here, since she’s the one who started Sock Dreams!
I mentioned in my own Behind the Lens post that Sock Dreams has a “look” and language to product photos, and that language and look is partially evolved from Niq’s early Socks of the Day photo posts! Sadly, multiple site redesigns and blog moves have lost most of those posts to the sands of time, but I was able to find these two images from a post made in December of 2003!
Tumblr media
The welcoming and casual tone of her photos, merging lifestyle product photography with traditional product photography, has become a key part of how Sock Dreams portrays our products online. We want to show you not just what a pair of socks or arm warmers looks like, but how they look in life.
Tumblr media
On the left: Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks in Plum On the right: Chevron Sleeves in Dark Red/Black
I sent Niq a questionnaire to see how she started this sock-tacular style, and I’m going to let her tell the tale in her words—because whatever I might know or share is nothing compared to her sock saga!
♥ ♥ ♥
When did you start taking pictures for Sock Dreams? I mean, we all know the answer is “since Sock Dreams was born” but give us a date so we can imagine the labyrinthine photo archives you must have!
My first rolls of actual sock shots were developed by Seattle FilmWorks on March 29, 2000... test shots were taken a couple of months before that, to see if I could even make socks look interesting enough for people to want them for themselves.
Do you remember your first photo for Sock Dreams?
Attached is not my first shot, but the first one that felt usable and gave me a direction to work with on this new venture of taking pictures of socks on feet.
Tumblr media
When/how did you start photography?
When I was about 8 I was out hiking with my mom and she handed me the camera to take a picture of her... not only was it my first picture, it was the first time tilting the camera to get what I would learn much later is called a Dutch angle, I still love my angled shots, but I do try not to overuse them.
Tumblr media
What was the road that led you to taking product pictures, was it through portraits of friends, necessity, or did you jump right in to working with folks modelling product?
It was necessity... since it was just me in the beginning I would use a tripod and remote shutter release.... I didn't even have a digital camera at the time, in fact, my first two years online I relied on SFW and digital scans but one particularly bad batch of images quickly made me realize it was worth the investment in the "new technology".
Tumblr media
What is the most difficult thing for you when it comes to taking pictures of product?
Keeping track of all the details so the picture comes together with minimal fuss... are the socks even and the lines straight? did a bit of fuzz magically appear since we started? ...probably.
Tumblr media
We Love Colors Plus Size Tights in Purple
What is your favourite thing about taking pictures of product?
Seeing all the new socks in action.
Do you have a favourite thing to take pictures of?
Sockwise it is thigh highs.... outside of socks it's either flowers or bugs, especially bugs on flowers.
Tumblr media
Patchwork Floral Lace Stockings with Attached Garter Belt
Hardest question ever: what’s your current favourite shot?
ModSocks fiddle head ferns... image attached.

From film to Instagram, Niq’s style has sparked the fashionable flame that is Sock Dreams! Thanks to her, we’ve been having fun with our photo shoots since the start, and we hope it shows!

La Mer - This is not a child's game 4K UHD from Victor Claramunt on Vimeo.
La Mer (an ecological fashion film)
Film synopsis We live in a society where we are not aware of the amount of plastic around us. This is not a child's play. Four children, from 11 to 6 years old, in recognizable two-color environments, where the plastic that coexists naturally with us stands out, nobody cares. The kids will tell us what we are doing with our oceans ... with our planet.
#gobeyondplastic
------------------------ Film's backstory
Since I was a child, I liked to play in every room of the house. I hung different objects from any part of the room that seemed that they could always have been there. This was the first image that came to mind when I thought about this film. Mixing style and social denunciation without losing the sense of humor to raise awareness of the dangers of plastics in the oceans was not a simple task. I believe that any narrative is good to achieve a goal. This is not a children's game, we do everything possible to save the planet.
La Mer is the new Victor Claramunt fashion film. “I am smart enough to know that. This is the essential premise that kids tell us. We are destroying the seas and we do nothing to change that. From the world of fashion we must also make the audience aware that we should do everything in our power to change the course of history. Fashion as a social speaker. Kids as social speakers. Stuck Inside Media Diary Week 7
Tumblr media
I realized that I didn’t include my watching of the Parks And Rec special thing that was on. By no means was it perfect, though I imagine that it was the best case scenario for something like that (in terms of being an original story, as opposed to a table/script read that the Community cast put together that’s coming out...ur, at some point). Is it necessary as a piece of media? It raised a lot of money for Feeding America and did its best in trying to shine some optimism in really unsettling times. Kinda nice.

Filmworker, Zierra 2017 [as of now this is available on Netflix]
Interesting take on a documentary about, but not about Stanley Kubrick. It would be unusual for any Kubrick dude to not know or have some kind of inkling that he was a complicated figure (an asshole), especially when it came to making movies, so the point of the movie isn’t really to inform that aspect of of it (though it probably confirmed suspicions, should you have any). It’s more a case example of how toxic relationships like these work and how dangerous it is to deify people, especially your own heroes. Of course, should any of us be given the opportunity to work or be near someone we look up to, how’re do we know what our breaking point is for them before we reach it (unfortunately for Leon Vitali, it wasn’t until Kubrick passed away that he could see just how far deep he was). This is also a pretty good example of how companies and corporations will treat you like garbage just to advance their credibility and how sometimes it feels like a documentary’ll show you that but not really do anything change that (as far as I know).
Mad Men, [season 4 premier] “Public Relations”, “Christmas Comes But Once A Year”, “The Good News”, “The Rejected”
So I definitely haven’t watched Season 4 as a more grown person than I was back in high school when this first aired. So I’ve known Don’s life is a nightmare, but never really processed why or thought about why; I was not the most keen observer (probably because I was thinking about not turning in homework). Now with all that said, jeeeeeeez Don’s life is a super depressing nightmare oooof. Now Season 4 feels like it needs some more runway to catch up with itself and its momentum it revved up to at the end of season 3, so the first couple of weeks feel a little wobbly (though wobbly Mad Men is leagues better than some other dramas at their best). However, the Don and Lane friendship does gets established in this slew of episodes, two men who couldn’t be more different, but can’t help but be bonded by a miserable moment in time.
Three Busy Debras, “Barbra”
Holy shit this episode is so genius. So many shades of Stangers With Candy in this one.
Rick And Morty, “Never Ricking Morty”
Believe me, I don’t want you to know that I watched this either.
Tumblr media
The Last Dance, Parts 5 & 6
These were probably my favorite parts of the doc so far, probably because its the most enjoyable stuff you can watch (hold for destroying any chance Charles Barkley had at winning a championship). Jordan as a brand, both figuratively and literally-the concept of celebrity through a Michael Jordan lens; I could lap that up for hours. It makes me mad that there’s only two hours left (now), because there’s clearly so much more that could be covered, but will leave unturned (more on this next week).
Monty Python: Almost The Truth (Lawyers Cut), “The Not-So-Interesting Beginnings”
Good example of the subjects not getting in the way of the subject matter. Probably the thing that leaves to be desired is seeing the remaining members (this was made in 2009, so Chapman was the only deceased member at the time) together and interacting with one another. You get a little bit of Michael Palin and Terry Jones together, but not in an interviewed capacity, which faintly scratches that itch. If I had to guess, I’d say that they all don’t love being together without Palin there as a buffer, just based on what I know about Monty Python. Lotta strong and brilliantly smart personalities with no real acknowledgement on who’s the best, because they all think they’re the best (maybe not Palin or Jones). Also, this is a surprisingly self-aware interview with Idle, which really shattered any preconceived notions I have for him-might have to do some self-evaluation.

Escape From New York, Carpenter 1981 [as of now this is available on Prime]
I’ve definitely lied to people about having seen all of Escape From New York before. Why? Because it made me appear better than I actually was. It and Die Hard With A Vengeance (another great New York movie, though for the record, I’ve still never seen all of it) seemed to be two movies that I kept catching just enough glimpses of throughout the years without having actually seeing all of it. For instance, I had no idea that Harry Dean Stanton was in Escape From New York, which instantly elevates movies for guys like me from being “pretty good li’l B movie” to “this is actually advanced and high art” (this isn’t always the case on the HDS matrix, but it is consistent, see Repo Man).
Tumblr media
Mad Men, “The Chrysanthemum And The Sword”, “Waldorf Stories”
Real fool me once with your racism shame on you you, Roger Sterling. Fool me twice, shame on me (re: “The Chrysanthemum And The Sword”). “Waldorf Stories” is really the first episode put in gear this season, maybe it’s because we’re getting Ken Cosgrove back (hell yeh) or maybe it just feels that way because “The Suitcase” is next and I know it; it’s an incredible build-up, what with hindsight and all that.

Mel Brooks: Unwrapped, Yentob 2018 [as of now this is available on HBO]
Listen, this isn’t very good. I think some of it has to do with Brooks, who kind of gets in the way of it all, which is a very hard thing to admit. It’s got some moments, when it actually tells you something about Mel Brooks, but for the most part its just a British guy not taking command of his own documentary and subject and that’s just like barely interesting. Mel Brooks is still a king, though.
Tumblr media
Mad Men, “The Suitcase”
This is regarded as the best episode of Mad Men and one of the best episodes of television in the 2010s. I don’t know how it stands up by itself, like I don’t know if it resonates well with someone who’s never watched Mad Men outside of the vacuum. Usually going into one of these episodes that almost transcends its own show I tend to be weary, be it brand new (like when I watched “Pine Barrens” for the first time when I watched The Sopranos) or on a re-watch like this. I trick myself into thinking “well I bet its not that good” because you’re told to the contrarian take is the most interesting take, but I didn’t with this one. I remember the first time I watched it and I don’t think I’ve gone back and watched it in years, so I had forgotten almost all of the context around the episode, except for the argument. This episode is really special, hands down. Don’t love the ghost, but pobody’s nerfect. This podcast talks about it way better than I ever could, listen to that instead of reading this (I just want yer clicks, suckers!)

Heartburn, Nichols 1986 [as of now this is available on Prime]
I say this as someone who doesn’t travel in Mike Nichols circles (though this is the fourth movie of his that I’ve watched during all this, so maybe I do and I just don’t know it), but why isn’t this trotted out more as one of his best movies? My Nora Ephron bias might be showing a lot here, someone I didn’t really appreciate until I watched Everything Is Copy about a year ago (it’s an HBO doc-meaning it’s available on that platform if you want nice documentary to watch sometime), but this movie’s great! And it has two of the most famous movie stars to ever live as the two lead roles and Jeff Daniels as a bit player. And yet its legacy only feels relevant to those who seek out Mike Nichols or Nora Ephron movies, which feels odd, considering one half of that creative team is best known for The Graduate and the other for When Harry Met Sally (or Sleepless In Seattle or You’ve Got Mail).

Kingdom Of Heaven (Director’s Cut), Scott 2005
I’ll be honest, I wanted to watch Return Of The King, but that just wasn’t an option. This movie’s technically good, like more Ridley Scott movies are than they aren’t, but really lacks any kind of new message besides “Religion’s pretty fucked up how it made people do that, huh?” Which to a lot of people is super appealing, but when you make a movie that only exists because of Lord Of The Rings’ success, you’d hope for something more (though isn’t this always the case with these kinds of movies?) Like make the movie about David Thewlis or Jeremy Irons. Obviously the battle/fight sequences are really cool to watch and look at, and that’s not an at all terrible critique to give it either. It’s fine that there’s dumb-guy Lord Of The Rings (which is semi-controversial considering a lot of the book nerds already consider Lord Of The Rings [movie] is dumb-guy Lord Of The Rings).
Mad Men, “The Summer Man”
Ah yes, the Don journals and goes swimming episode. It’s good considering it has to follow up “The Suitcase.” I can’t think of any from this particular episode, but (and I think it checks out, cultural timeline wise too) this is the season where it almost feels like the writers/directors figures out that their show was ripe for meme-dom and .gifs-sometimes when that happens it goes real south for the sake of quality, but luckily not Mad Men.

Jiro Dreams Of Sushi, Gelb 2011 [as of now this is available on Netflix]
I bet David Fincher loves this movie. I’m not a huge sushi lover (it’s fine, but way too expensive) so I guess I’ve figured that’d be a huge barrier for me to jump over to enjoy this doc. This thing’s got a weird, but great energy to it, where it feels like four twenty-minute segments sewn together; right when you think “well this should’ve just been a quick package on Frontline” it adds another wrinkle. Would probably be constructed more differently now, considering how food docs/series’ work now, but its strengths lie in its simplicity.
Top Chef, Season 17 episode 8
Great Restaurant Wars this season. Very compelling stuff and almost athletic. Andy Greenwald said it best.
Tumblr media
Mad Men, “The Beautiful Girls”, “Hands And Knees”, “Chinese Wall”
“Beautiful Girls” is another entry into the best Mad Men episodes (though like “The Suitcase” I don’t think it would necessarily resonate out of context). Iconic closing shot and a great Sally Draper episode, who I’ve feared I might’ve been overrating for the last couple of years. Nah, Sally Draper is underrated even. Big spiral moves for Don as well in here, though hopefully he can course correct after tasting Sally’s rum-cooked French Toast (it won’t!)

Basic Instinct, Verhoeven 1992
I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be completely neutral about this movie; your life must be so care-free, so calming, so unconcerned with trying to figure out how exactly to start calling your close friends either “cowboy” or “hoss” as if you’ve been doing it your whole life. Also, listen, I get it about that one shot and it being the thing people kept talking about and the thing most associated with this movie, but nothing and no one prepared me for seeing Gus in a cowboy hat in that bar/club before the Nick/Roxie chase. That and all the ice-pick stabbings. And the opening crime scene. And a whole lot of other stuff that takes place in this movie.
Tumblr media
Mad Men, “Blowing Smoke”, “Tomorrowland” [season 4 finale], “A Little Kiss Part 1 & 2″ [season 5 premier]
The letter! Disneyland! Marriage again! A lot of things happen in these four episodes that are the end and beginning of seasons. But when I realized that I was going to get “Zou Bisou Bisou” in this block of episodes, it was game over. I’ve had it stuck in my head every day for a prolonged amount of time since Saturday and the only thing that makes it not terrible is knowing how pissed off Don was that it happened to him. Don’t marry a 25-year-old. Season 4′s a weird one for Betty as the show tried to navigate how to keep her involved with the show even though she and Don aren’t married anymore and it’s not....great. Probably because they keep making her “true” emotional foil children (specifically Glen and to a greater level Sally, but the tribulations that come between a mother and almost teenage daughter shouldn’t be the same as a mother and some weird kid down the block who just happens to be the son of the show’s creator).

I got an email the other day from a director who was reaching out to full-timers and freelancers alike to help us navigate the absolute disruption of our work.
He walked through some resources available to us. Some are specific to our industry. Others are generic. Either way, though, they’re worthy of consideration.
For example, if you’re full-time wherever you are, consider using your accrued sick leave. And definitely definitely definitely talk to HR about your options.
If you’re at a point where you need state help, your information one stop shopping destination’s gonna be Washington State’s Employment Security Department where you’ll find the most up to date information about employment/unemployment options.
If you’re a freelance creative experiencing the temporary collapse of your industry in the Pacific Northwest, King County’s assembled information to help form your community’s response in this handbook.
Statewide, Washington Filmworks advocates for video production professionals. Part of their response to the state of our industry is gathering data about those of us affected by widespread economic disruption. To make your circumstance known and to add your voice to this industry wide experience, there’s a brief survey you can fill out on their website.
Citywide, Seattle’s also gathering data in a broader survey in which you can participate online as well. Its purpose is to “identify early local and regional effects of COVID-19, inform strategies for regional economic recovery and development, and maximizing and allocating badly-needed federal and state recovery aid.”
Of course these resources probably aren’t the final word on what’s available. For sure they’re more tailored to the industry in which I’m a professional. My point is, though, no matter your industry, you’re still a part of a professional community that, just like you, is trying to figure out next steps. And while each of us is dealing with our own question marks and responsibilities, it’s important to remember to come up for air every so often to listen to what our communities have to say.
After all, they’ve got a lot more eyes and ears and brains at work on what’s gonna or what should happen next.
Bottom line: we may be quarantined, but now’s the time for more conversation within our communities... not less.
Onward!
:-)

are YOU nervous behind the camera???🕵️‍♀️ Follow: @Nurse.Stefan 🤔 ⠀ It's not like it was a #featurefilm ... just a #shortfilm to depict the value of nurses, and the nursing profession as a whole. (see the link in my bio to watch the final product!) 🙌 ⠀ The #filmmaking I'm used to is: me, behind a camera, solo, or at most with 3 - 4 people. ⠀ With an award-winning director that was flown out to Seattle on my behalf, higher-ups from my own hospital, and about 15 other crew members and bystandardards bunched up in one silent room during my interview... I realized this thing called #setlife made me #nervousaf . 😨 ⠀ Never have I had an #actingclass still, or have the foggiest idea what goes down at #actingclasses ... but I scratched this whole new #actorlife idea out of my head, and realized all I had to do was be real.. ⠀ and in no time, we we're #makingmovies . 😎👉📽 ⠀ I love #nursing and I love #filmwork. It's combining those two passions that allow me to excel with happiness in what I do. Living that #nurselife , and that #filmlife , in harmony all at once. 💯 ⠀ How can I run a code to save a life, and be SO nervous #onset ? ⠀ 🎬#NurseStefan — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2FnK0mn
