Video
Michael J. Fox at the end of the video in an Irish accent: "Ah, that's good. I like that. I need a hat."
I started laughing too hard at that. 🤣
It's interesting: Fox stated that he did not want to play any stereotypes (glory be) but he "couldn't help it." I rather think his performance as Séamus (accent or no accent? That is the question) was actually quite counterstereotypical, and beautiful for that reason.
Obviously, his accent needed a bit of work and his dialogue was a wee bit unrealistic, but apart from that, he is the furthest thing from the Irish stereotype we so often—and I so begrudgingly—see.
The average Celtic persona/stereotype, even described occasionally by Celts themselves, is shown as fiery, hot-headed and hot-tempered too, and always up for a fight. Instead, in BTTF 3, it's Marty McFly, the American teenager, who can't turn down a fight or challenge—while Séamus the Irishman is mellow, calm, and collected, and even sagely spouts his lovely quote of, "You could have just walked away and nobody would of thought the less of you for it. All it would have been was words...hot air from a buffoon. Instead, you let him rile you...into playin' his game, his way, by his rules."
Like, DUDE. 👏🏻😳
Furthermore, his personality inspired a good deal of my current Scottish detective, Angus MacLeod, who is very collected indeed.
And now I ask you, do you wonder why Séamus McFly is my favorite character in the Back to the Future series? 😏😁

Okay, weird random thing:
I just remembered that, the first time I watched Back to the Future 3, I was scared Seamus was going to get shot in the showdown. He mentioned that he had this feeling he needed to be there, like it had something to do with his destiny. And I thought that was foreshadowing for his death, like he was gonna block a bullet for Marty.
I am very glad I was mistaken. I like Seamus.

Bttf 3 AU in which Doc is visiting Seamus and Maggie when Marty comes crashing down their fence
Them hearing the crash, then rushing outside
Seamus and Maggie being like ??? and Doc "holy shit this is my little idiot best friend" and excusing himself as he picks Marty up from the ground, telling them that's his nephew who was actually meant to arrive the next day but for some reason arrived earlier

Today I wanna make a little post about a detail from the Twin Pines McFly house that I notice whenever I watch the first movie. And that is: the many family pictures they've got on like every surface. Walls, shelves, desks, etc. I mean, the original timeline McFlys may not be functioning well as a family unit overall, but the decor does seem to imply that they're fairly connected to their pasts/where they come from and consider that history important. Some screenshots...
Photo on the left there (appears to be a man, two women, and a little girl) and the corner of another frame that I couldn't get a decent shot of, but seems to be a portrait of a young woman.
Tumblr media
Picture of two little kids on the table between Biff and George.
Tumblr media
A LOT of old photos can be seen in the living room. Like, these are very old-timey professional photos of relatives. Bottom left one hanging on the wall appears to be a wedding photo. (I've got one pretty much identical to it of my own relatives and recognize the pose lol)
Tumblr media
And then there are a few more behind George in the dinner scene.
Tumblr media
And I dunno, I like imagining that the McFlys--with all their faults-- really had a foundation built around their families. That every photo chosen to be placed in a frame and around the house held importance to George or Lorraine and that the kids grew up hearing countless stories about their ancestors. Considering Lorraine has told the story of how she met George "a million times", I can absolutely see her pointing to a photo at random and being like, "You know, the day that this was taken, your great grandmother was--" and Marty, Linda, and Dave groaning because they've sat through the story a hundred times in the past.
It's just a nice touch, and, in some ways, makes this version of their house feel much more like a home than the "improved" version which is pretty much devoid of ANY family photos--current or historical.
Tumblr media
I scoured the scenes of the house at the end and only saw two pictures: one that appeared to be a graduation photo of Linda and another that was blurry, but I think it was of the 3 McFly sibs. So I have to wonder...are the "better" McFlys less connected for some reason to their pasts? Less of an emphasis on those familial ties and where they came from? Or is it all just as important, but they simply don't want a million pictures cluttering their walls and ruining their aesthetic? It's kind of funny that when they were deciding what to do with the Lone Pine McFly house, they were like, "Get RID of all the family photos! Make this place look like a museum!" Is it not possible for an upper-middle-class family to have their fancy decor strewn about and also cherished family portraits??
Anyway, it's just something that stands out to me when I watch the movie. I'd love to have been able to see all of those pictures close up and form my own headcanons on who I think they are and what the stories are behind them. And I guess I do share some of Crispin Glover's criticism of the end of the film after all, haha. Just sort of a weird thing to wipe out any trace of like. A family living there in that house. Also, there are still too many rugs. Y'all know how I feel about the over-abundance of rugs in both versions of the McFly house.
K bye.
