Exhalation by Ted Chiang is a collection of his fascinating short stories. Chiang writes an intellectual style of science fiction with recurring themes of fate, free will, responsibility, & relationships. His stories vary in size & while I didn't love all of them, I appreciated what he was trying to achieve. I also enjoyed the bit at the end where Chiang briefly explains the inspiration behind each of the stories. We code-rats are the fixers for the microcosm of glitches that become present when creating authentic virtual realms. UtaniTech rewards us for our labor by giving us a chance to pretend that the shackles aren’t there but the toys they give us are shallow comparisons to the Aeternus, the philosopher’s stone of UtaniTech’s virtual empire, the key and the gate to every colony realm in the Slipspace.
