you know, part of me can see why turboranger has the reputation it has. it gets off to a rocky start, its premise is such an odd mishmash of disparate ideas, and most of those concepts are improved upon in further seasons. megaranger provides a much more authentic take on a teenage sentai team, gekiranger gets the most out of paralleling its heroes and villains from the start rather than stumbling into it halfway through, and shows like zyuranger, gingaman, and magiranger will take the fantasy concepts turboranger teases and utilize them to much better effect. and it's certainly not the first car-themed sentai anyone thinks of
but even still, i think there's something really special about this show. there's something neat about seeing hirohisa soda try out all these new concepts after years of sticking so closely to militaristic and scifi themes, as rough as they are at times. and while there was certainly trouble getting the show off the ground in its early episodes, watching it go from its shaky beginnings, where they were throwing everything they could at a wall to see what sticks, to a confident story about youth, love, and hatred, genuinely made for one of the most rewarding experiences i've had watching toku
and even when it's not getting into its juiciest plot hooks, it's just so much fun. the episodic plots, the action, even the mech fights stand out for the time. it all comes together for a really good time
the turborangers themselves are pretty basic characters so i can see why some find them boring, but their actors are all really likable and the focus episodes are spread out equally enough that they make for a really charming team to follow anyway. especially riki, who definitely stands out from the bunch and has cemented himself as one of my favorite reds ever. you can tell kenta satou really embraced the role, to the point where he sings over half of the show's theme songs and inserts. an absolutely iconic showa boy for sure. even the supporting cast is great! i could've used a bit more from dr. dazai, but shiiron is just as sweet as you'd want a sentai fairy to be, and while yamaguchi-sensei's appearances are fewer than i would've liked, anytime she appears they really take advantage of her role as a teacher who wants the best for her students, often delivering some of the best episodes of the series. and at this point, i don't think you need me to tell you how much i love yamimaru and kirika, my absolute favorite sentai villains of the 80s
im rambling at this point but man, this show was such a pleasant surprise, and it ended on a perfect note for me! do i think turboranger will hit people as much as it hit me? probably not, but i highly recommend it if you're at all interested in showa sentai. it really doesn't deserve to be as ignored as it is or talked about like soda had run out of steam after liveman, bc while i can't definitively say it's the best season of the era, it's without a doubt my new favorite
