I really like the fanon idea of Wirt being the twins' dad! I've seen it in at least a few fics, sometimes with Sara as the mom and sometimes with Beatrice, so I did both. Wirt has two hands

love can burn like a cigarette
Tumblr media
summary: Wirt has had a crush on Sara since he was 14, and he's now 19. after meeting up with her at a college party, by accident, they catch up.
warnings: cigarette usage
-----------------------------------------
“Come on,” one of Wirt’s classmates begged, “it's just one party. What, would you rather stay home and…   I don't know, sit around?”
Wirt gave a weak smile. “fine” he spoke coldly, he loathed parties, they were too noisy for his liking, and all people did was get drunk and hook up.
As soon as he entered the door, he regretted his choice, and after chatting for a while, he went outside for a quick smoke. It was just to ease his nerves, and no one could see him.
The night was delicate, and he didn't want to shatter its quiet. He took a hit of his cigarette and exhaled softly, watching the smoke leave his mouth.
“Do you have a lighter?” a gentle feminine voice came from behind him, he jolted back slightly out of shock, and hurriedly grabbed a cheap Bic lighter from his jean pockets, before passing it to the woman.
“Thanks,” she hummed, she then fumbled with it for a while, but it refused to light. She scoffed, making a “eughhh” sound under her breath.
“Here,” the boy muttered with the cigarette still in his mouth, he took it out, tapped on it to get rid of any ash, and lit the girl's cigarette using his flame.
As he looked up at the girl his gut sank in realization, and his face went pale.
“Wirt?!” the girl sputtered.
Her name was Sara, Wirt's former crush from ninth grade. She had beautiful black curls that went down to her collarbones, and her voice remained as soft and sweet as before, just a bit more baritone. She had grown taller since then. She smelled of sandalwood and roses, a bold contrast against Wirt’s scent of cigarettes, tea and pen ink.
“S-Sara? What are you doing here?” he questioned, his cigarette still burning. His face slowly got veiled in a light shade of red.
"the same thing you are, some friends dragged me along" she smiled while taking a hit of her cigarette, she couldn't help but notice that Wirt was now taller than her.
"heh, um, hey are you still friends with Jason?" Wirt wondered, saying "Jason" like it was an illness.
"Please don't tell me you still hate him" she teased "we're still friends, I guess. we barely talk."
"n-no, It just um, it just crossed my mind." he faltered, knowing that he was lying.
"Why did you hate him?" she asked, exhaling a puff of smoke.
"I um, I used to have a crush on you," he muttered, "a-and I thought you liked Jason so I hated him for it."
"I even made this- shit!" he quickly dropped his cigarette and stomped it out, he looked at his index and middle finger, he had let the cigarette burn, almost forgetting that it was there, and it had seared his fingers. he cleared his throat while holding his fingers "I even made this cheesy tape with poetry and clarinet on it" he laughed softly.
"Do you still have it?" Sara questioned eagerly, wanting to hear his words of admiration.
"i-i think I might-- back in my dorm..." he confessed, "are you sure you want to hear it though? it's... really bad." he searched his pockets for a pack of cigarettes, hoping to light a new one to relieve his nerves again, but all he found was an empty box.
"Here, have mine," Sara insisted, and removed her cigarette from her mouth, handing it to him. "as long as I get to hear this tape."
he nodded stupidly, caught up in a daze. it wasn't until he finished the cigarette that he realized.
he flicked the cigarette butt out the window, and nervously tapped on the steering wheel. He hadn't even recognized that he was in his car until then.
"Are you sure you want to hear it?" he questioned once more, remembering the fact that the tape was twenty-two minutes long. "It's really long and cheesy..." he blushed.
"I don't mind" she smiled "you know, some classmates told me about the tape" she mentioned as if it was an afterthought.
he tensed up in shock, when did they tell her? "o-oh, really?" he stuttered out
"yeah, like a week after Halloween," she said, looking out the car windows, "I thought it was sweet"
he felt like he was about to puke, she thought it was sweet.
"i- um..." he squeaked "I wish I knew that then”
“Hm?” Sara hummed, not believing her ears.
“i- I said I wish I knew that then” he repeated, a red hue spreading across his face. “I didn't think I deserved you, I mean if we ever did date.”
“Why?” she inquired, never picking up on these feelings before.
“I-I don't know” he sighed, he did know, she was (and still is) pretty, confident and sweet, and he was awkward, dorky and rather melodramatic. “You were, um, sweet a-and pretty. And you were so confident.”
She smiled softly in return “do you still think that?”
He stammered trying to respond, It was impossible for him to say no, yet he wouldn't dare say yes.
“I-I mean- yeah?” he hesitated, attempting to sound kind, but not too kind.
“R-really?” Sara's attention snapped back as she turned her head to look at Wirt, and a faint maroon could be seen spreading across her cheeks.
He nodded, too flustered to reply with words. He had just admitted to finding her pretty.
“Oh, Thanks,” she replied, and you could hear the smile in her voice. “That’s actually really nice to hear from you. Means a lot, you know?”
“W-Why?” he questioned out of pure curiosity. “Why does it mean a lot, I mean.”
“I mean, you know how you write poetry? Yeah. poets just- I’d believe one if they called me pretty,” she confessed, making eye contact with him through the rearview mirror.
He smiled, a dorky smile that Sara loved dearly. He had the type of smile that leaves you mesmerized, the kind that you couldn't get enough of. He was so strangely loveable. Like a wilting flower, or unfinished poetry.
“T-thanks” he replied “I… think I say thanks to that…”
She giggled.
“When’d you stop liking me?” Sara continued to question him, he hesitated, not knowing what to say, he could tell her that he never stopped liking her (which was sadly true.), or lie, but what would he say? That it just ended, randomly? That he doesn't lay sleepless at night imagining what could’ve been? That he doesn’t still write poetry about her?
“I... I um, I think, maybe- no… I, I don't think-” Wirt’s ears and cheeks had turned red “I… d-didn't.”
The car had come to a stop, they were in the parking lot of the dorm building.
“Oh,” Sara said. “wow.”
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to freak you out or anythin-” Wirt was stopped by Sara’s hands grabbing the collar of his shirt, her lips felt his, his hands went to Sara’s hips, and he gradually let his eyes close. He could feel her smile during the kiss. It was something he had never felt before, not the smile, but the kiss, and yes, he was ashamed that he was 19 and still hadn't had his first kiss, well, up until now. His pages and pages of poetry could never define this feeling, he wished he could stay in this moment, never leaving Sara’s side. She put one of her hands to his cheek, cupping it.
The instant Sara’s lips parted from his, Wirt’s eyes started to water, he didn't know why, or how to stop it, he drew his hands away to hide his face, shame is too weak of a word to describe how he felt, he was mortified. He had finally had his first kiss, and instead of being sweet, or charming, he cried. He fucking cried.
“I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, this is so embarrassing, I'm so sorry.” Wirt began muttering under his breath as he tried to calm himself down.
“It's okay, it's okay.” Sara cooed as she held his hand, reassuring him that he wasn't embarrassing himself. He had begun to calm down, as Sara squeezed his hand, grounding him, taking him away from his worries.
“T-Thank you.” he smiled softly, wiping tears out of his eyes, he wasn't a long crier, usually just a minute or two and he was done, he had been accused of doing it for attention, when he was younger, because of it. “I-Its getting really late, I should just drive you home...”
“No- no it's okay, I can sleep over, I mean- if you're okay with that.” Sara smiled, and Wirt gave a weak smile back.
Their walk consisted of embarrassing stories, wirt telling her how many times he tried to get her attention, and how many times he chickened out trying to ask her out, and Sara told him how many times she tried to flirt with him, only for him to get too flustered to give an actual reply.
