Even with a pair of crutches created by alchemy, a mostly numb left arm and a completely unresponsive left leg turn the half mile trek to town into the most arduous journey of Jade’s life. Saphir hadn’t been able to so much as twitch a single toe. Jade, at least, still had the use of his right leg.
Mistakes, too many mistakes.
Nephry finds Jade collapsed and struggling to climb back to his feet, drenched in blood that isn’t his and looking more lost than she had ever seen him.

Tales of the Abyss -Rewatch- 11
Jade backstory episode!!
Okay so I’m using the localized spellings for characters names as opposed to what the official channel used in their subs mostly cause I’m more used to the localized spellings. Plus I kinda like the spellings better.
This is Keterburg Harbor. There were some damages to the Tartarus and the group must find a place to stay while its being repaired. Keterburg is also Jade's hometown. Their first order of business is to see he governor of Keterburg.
Anise suggests Ion relax at a hotel first but Ion says he'd want to pay his respects to the governor as well. Luke tells Ion to not push himself as Ion isn't that healthy which Ion appreciates. The others point out Luke is being nice now although its too late for it. Ion points out that Luke has always been kind and just didn't know how to express it.
Luke says he understands if people still think badly of him and can't blame them for it.
On the way they pass by Emperor Peony's house in Keterburg. The emperor was exiled here as a child due to the fight over succession. Emperor Peony was kept here to protect him although Jade says he used to sneak out anyways and play with the local kids. Luke is reminded of his own exile at the manor for seven years due to the similarities.
They finally make their way to the governor of Keterburg's place. Upon arriving the rest of the group finds out that the governor, Nephry Osborne, is Jade's younger sister.
She tells Jade that she'd take care of dealing with Tartarus' repairs and that Jade should go see the emperor who is worried about him. While everyone else believed Jade and his group died at the Akzeriuth incident, Emperor Peony believed Jade was still alive. Anise points out that this must be because Jade is the emperor's best friend.
Before leaving, Nephry asks Luke to meet her in private later as she his something to talk to him about.
The group checks in at a hotel and one of the staff says it's an honor that one of the two prodigies of Keterburg, Dr. Balfour, is staying at their hotel. It's explained later to the rest that Jade's birthname is Jade Balfour before he got adopted into the Curtiss family.
The other prodigy is Saphir Ortion Gneiss who they now know as Dist the Reaper of the Six God Generals. Jade tells them that Ortion Cavern which they went to earlier was named by Dist after himself. He also tells them he, Dist, Peony, and Nephry all went to the same school as children and that Dist considered Jade a friend back in the day.
A short flashback of Anise and Dist back then. Dist was always alone before Anise approached him. Dist turned the doll Tokunaga into Anise's weapon for her. Anise recalls Dist always talking about Jade back then - a fact that makes Jade feel sick.
(Anise and Dist’s... friendship(?) back then is shown as a short story in the manga)
Luke goes out by himself to meet with Nephry as he was asked to earlier. Nephry decided to tell Luke Jade's backstory as she felt it would be right as Luke is a replica.
She explains to him how Jade created fomicry at age nine to create a fixed version of her broken doll. She tells Luke of how, as a child, Jade was pretty cruel as he didn't understand anything about life and death. The one to turn him around was Professor Nebilim, their teacher. He turned back to his old self after her death though and Nephry is hoping Luke, as a replica, could help her brother out.
When Luke gets back to the hotel, Jade is already waiting for him and Jade knows that Nephry had talked to Luke.
Luke wanted to know more about what Nephry told him - about the bad thing Jade and Dist had done back then. Jade agrees to tell him as he thinks Luke has the right to know. Jade tells Luke that he killed Professor Nebilim.
Jade was a child genius who could do almost anything but couldn't use the seventh fonon. It's why he looked up to and respected his teacher Professor Nebilim who could. Jade said his teacher tried to dissuade him from trying to learn it yet he didn't listen and one day, he accidentally set off a fonic arte he couldn't control which caused an explosion causing Professor Nebilim's death.
Jade plans to save her by creating a replica of her but it was a failure and the replica went berserk. Both Jade and Dist decided they'd continue to try and create the perfect replica and bring Professor Nebilim back to life. Jade is later recognized and adopted into the Curtiss family which is a famous military family. It was then when he joined the military himself that he started extracting replica data from dead soldiers which earned him the Necromancer title.
One day, a failed experiment nearly got Jade killed. Peony was there to finally talk some sense into Jade and convince him to stop. People can't be brought back from the dead and Jade knew it as replicas don't have their original's memories. This was why Jade banned fomicry.
Jade ends the talk by telling Luke that it's late and they must go to bed. Luke thanks him and says he felt like it as a bonding moment for the two of them before going back to his room.
The group finally leaves to continue their journey the next day. Next stop is to meet with Emperor Peony!

Jade’s backstory is also sort of Dist’s backstory as well, I guess. They were all so cute as kids! Jade’s smile when he fixed Nephry’s doll was kinda creepy though. Not in a scary way and more like ‘this kid is disturbing’ kinda thing.
I’m kinda annoyed. Somehow everyone’s perception of Luke before his haircut is the jerkass Luke from their Akzeriuth journey. It’s like, everything else about him from before that was nothing. I’m so happy Ion remembered that despite the being an arrogant spoiled brat, Luke was nice back then and just couldn’t properly show it.
It’s too bad that everyone is saying and thinking otherwise and Luke’s own issues are making him believe them. It’s sad he now believes he was never a good person at all before so he deserves people thinking badly of him. I feel bad cause I made two whole comics joking about Luke’s becoming nice after a haircut years ago but it was a joke and I do think there’s more with Luke than just that. Darn it, this is making me feel guilty! X’D
Anyways, I actually read the manga chapters which shows Anise meeting Dist. I thought it was nice and it actually made me like the guy. On it, Anise was the only one to try and sit with him at the cafeteria and would talk to him. When Anise got bullied by the others and I think her tokunaga doll was ruined, Dist fixed it and turned it into a weapon for her. I thought it was cute. He’s not so bad just... he has issues. Like everybody else in his story but he seems okay with that, I guess.
I’m an anime-only so I’ve only heard of this but the replica Nebilim wasn’t destroyed and she’s a very strong optional boss battle in the game. It seems it was an interesting sidequest and I wish they animated it.
Luke telling Jade that they had a bonding moment was nice. Jade seem to still not like Luke for the Akzeriuth incident but it seems he’s starting to change his mind slowly. Both Nephry and Jade telling Luke what also basically is the origin of fomicry because Luke is a replica feels like... I dunno. Like a kid being told why he was adopted or something.
Also, them saying Luke has the right to know about it kind of really makes it sink in that Luke is a replica and not a human. He has to be told the reason for his existence from how the creation process even came to be. It’s giving me really weird feels. Like, what would you do if you found out you’re not exactly real? That you had no place in the world and someone deliberately created you with that in mind? And now you have to be given an explanation about your very existence?
Alright, enough of the weird stuff! Emperor Peony will show up next episode. Also the rappigs! I’m excited!
[Okay so, side note, I looked up rappigs cause I got curious about what the Japanese name is of their species and the first search result was a site... explaining what rappigs are. Just that. I’m confused lol. It did remind me that the only Tales of the Abyss merch I own is a small Jade figure. I wish I had either Luke or Asch but eh, at least I got one.]

I HAVE A NEW AU STAND BACK
this one is kinda a role-swap but it is also simultaneously a train-wreck buckle in kids
I’m calling this AU “new game -” as a play on new game + haha get it
sam’s back again befuckening everything using walls of bullet points
so this au STARTS with the end of the regular game
luke saves the world, eldrant falls, etc etc
luke expects to die its very sad my bby
BUT
then he wakes up in his bedroom in batical
and is like????????? for obvious reasons
so he leaves his room and everything is surprisingly normal? no one remembers eldrant or ANY of the journey
clearly a case of time travel (blame lorelei like always lol)
it’s the morning before the “plot” happens
the only out of place thing is that luke is allowed out of the estate, and no one ever seems to remember a time when this wasn’t the case
so he goes to the nearest person he knows really well, natalia
THANKFULLY natalia has also been looking for him for similar reasons SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING TOO
and in this au luke and natalia are not romantically involved but they are bros
so theres a happy reunion and they are both thankful to see each other even if it is under crazy circumstances like this
they do a little digging and it turns out that in this reality, luke was never kidnapped (giving luke a headache as to whether he is luke or asch???)(he is luke just so you guys know)
and then it is the day when the plot arrives
luke is EXPECTING van like he and natalia have made an elaborate plan to stop him right then and there
but instead of van

except instead of being locrian colonel tear grants her official title is “voice of yulia mysterica fende”
both luke and natalia are thrown for one hell of a loop but then tear accidentally causes a hyperresonance transporting all three of them to tataroo valley
no worries tho bc she knows someone that can meet them at engeve they get gotta get a ride from the coach
and natalia and luke are like ok this is gonna be fine anise jade and ion are at engeve they will know what to do they are professionals
and they get there and go straight to rose’s house bc apparently there is an “important guest from the military” there
ill give you a hint
its not jade
colonel saphir ortion gneiss meets their acquaintance and immediately luke runs outside to throw up
except its saphir not dist (bc apparently dist doesn’t exist) and saphir is pretty nice (if a bit sniffly)
at this point luke and natalia throw all their expectations out the window
which was a good idea
because guess who walks in
jade!
except he looks a lot different and he’s wearing fon-master’s clothes and saphir just called him “ion”
so that’s fun
tear seems to know him too which is a bit odd
