easy to miss content in coe, a non-exhaustive list
(this just applies to base game, i’ll update this if i discover more)
chapters 1-3 have no text you can really miss, so just examine everything and you should be fine.
chapter 4 has a lot of missable stuff. i think we all know about the kanou flag & how to get it, but...kanou also has unique dialogue if you talk to him with the guy in the nap room, in one of the bathrooms, and with the guy you see dying when you first enter chapter 4.
the woman who asks you to find her friends is also easily missable.
there’s also...the text when you go insane. most of it isn’t too notable but certain ones around areas where there are a lot of books can be interesting: if you go insane in the room with all the books (the one with pochi’s growth diary) you’ll find out the text on the books spells ‘why did you kill your mother and younger brother reiji’. syllable by syllable. yes it is an extreme pain in the ass to get.
there’s also a couple other things scattered around tied to the books & reading them while insane but not as much as in other chapters
not much in chapter 5 other than kanou flag dialogue.
chapter 6 has a lot of stuff. atou’s phone has a tracker on it and you can choose to take it off or keep it on (this will be talked about later).
there’s also a book in this chapter that only appears on a playthrough after you’ve cleared s+ and only appears once, meaning you can only read it once and it will disappear. i posted the translated text but if you’re playing through the game and want to access it send me a dm and i’ll toss you a save file so you don’t have to go through all of chapter 6.
there’s some interesting dialogue while insane (you can examine the books in the guestrooms) but by and large it feels like there’s a bit less than chapter 6.
chapter 7: ...the ‘insane’ dialogue when examining things in this chapter has more complete sentences. there’s a lot of ‘you killed everyone’, ‘headless rat’, etc.
notably, in the people of akasha room you’ll see dialogue like ‘seodore, you should’ve been an angel, so why did you betray us’
examining ‘a note about the grapevine’ from sanemitsu while insane gets ‘you traitor’
the tokairirichi puzzle, examined while insane, will say ‘stella’
and, of course, the note in the room where you find kazue’s final CD that says ‘this is not the start of a nightmare but the end of a peaceful dream’ can also be examined in vision shift to get the only instance of blue text in the base game itself (i previously said ‘while insane’. this was my misread i apologize)
in chapter 8: (i think this is chapter 8 but it might be chapter 7)...when you’re walking around with isoi in the main building he will have unique dialogue for a lot of the rooms, unlike kanou: he comments on enomoto if you go into her room, he comments on harada & utsugi if you go into the library, he talks about jabuchi in his room...etc. he also has unique dialogue depending on whether you took the tracker off the phone or not (if you go back to the room where you first found the phone)
i tried to include everything i remembered but i’m sure this isn’t all of it, let me know or feel free to add on if there’s anything you know about i didn’t put here

Alright. I'll bite. What's COE? I assume it's a game? And where would I be able to watch a playthrough(?) of it?
細胞神曲 - Cell of Empireo is an RPGMaker horror game by Sharktale Factory! You can find an English Translation on YouTube here!! It has the full game with all of the endings, and the first five Records of the DLC! The game itself is playable in both Japanese and Korean.
If you'd like to play it with Machine Translation yourself, I have a tutorial here! Please be aware that MTL is hard to work with, and can be confusing. IF you choose to do this, there is a walkthrough on how to get the best ending here!
TLDR: You play as Haruki Atou, 28 year old detective! When his coworker, Eiji Shinano, goes missing, Atou tracks his last known location to the mysterious cult called the Empyrean Heaven Research Institute. Atou finds himself wrapped up in a situation far larger than expected, and discovers a lot about both the Institute and himself along the way!
This game has everything: it has gay people. It has religious imagery. There is a headless rat. There's a mad scientist who asks to hold hands. The Divine Comedy is everywhere. There is foreshadowing and lore EVERYWHERE and it is sooooo fascinating!!! Genuinely I love this game so so so much!! There is a reason I have been drawing it for (checks watch) almost a year nonstop.
Cell of Empireo play order:
Cell of Empireo DLC: Records of Sanemitsu Isoi [YT tl stops here, after record 5 Hermit's Room Interlude Cell of Mirage (unreleased, fukao-San is working on it)
If you want to go in completely blind, I'll leave it there, but I'll add some of my own rambles under the cut! I'll also post the content warnings there as well o7 This game is recommended for people 17 and up, but I think you should be fine! The rating is for violence mostly. There are some flashing lights and shaking screen moments.
CONTENT WARNINGS (by me)
religious themes, human and animal experimentation/death, gore, hallucinations, suicide, murder, familial abuse, body horror, attempted SA (brief, nothing happens, i can tell you when it happens if you need a warning for this)
aaand some ramblings
There are soooo many different variations based on what ending you're on track for. It is FASCINATING to see lines change in really subtle ways because of Atou's actions.
the lore MAKES SENSE and adds things SYMBOLICALLY and there are LAYERS and you can theorize about stuff!!! This game is so good!!!
the boss fights are SO MUCH FUN. For an RPGMaker game there are so many different mechanics??? There's a RHYTHM GAME SECTION??? it's FANTASTIC
this is a game and a series about love in all its forms. There is platonic love, familial, romantic, whatever the hell flowerpot trio has going on, and more!
There are so many terrible dads that I was able to run a 'Worst Dads' Poll and people had genuine debates, it was fantastic!!
METAFICTION. IT'S METAFICTION (i am very normal)
Sanemitsu <3 Sanemitsu isoi <3 Sanemitsu Isoi my beloved <3
I have written so many theory and analysis essays. there is so much lore i go so insane it's so fun (LORE ANALYSIS NOT REQUIRED FOR A SATISFYING WATCH/PLAYTHROUGH. I AM JUST INSANE)
The information you learn along the way recontextualizes earlier parts so you want to watch Through it again to catch the details that you missed the first time around!!
Also every character has reasons and motivations for what they’re doing, even if atou doesn’t know it. They are all so so painfully human…. Emotionally devastating

What undertale songs would you assign to coe characters
ok so!! to me, a lot of undertale, deltarune, and homestuck tracks and live in the same genre, so I ended up doing a mix of all three! I didn't do EVERY character, but i did a bunch of them! In no particular order Tucking them under a cut because it gets long!
Noa Enomoto - Snowdin town her DLC record's track reminds me so strongly of this one that i had to do it
Mutei Harada - Premonition Self explanatory! Very much just gives off the VibesTM
You Jabuchi - Battle Against a True Hero ougughgh it's a little melancholy and bittersweet but the themes of justice are soooo strong,, it's a fight track so it makes me think of jabuchi's boss fight
Reiji Isoi - Song That Might Play when you Fight Sans I have no reasoning for this, it's just fun!
Haruki Isoi - Fallen (soundtest) Quietly melancholy. There's something so sad about Haruki to me,,
Haruki Atou - Field of Hopes and Dreams I'm gonna be honest this one is just pure bias. I like the undertones of it a lot and it just feels very reminiscent of Atou to me
Eiji Shinano - DOGSONG sorry i had to and Enemy Approaching dogboy joke aside (<3) I think Energy Approaching is an upbeat and fun track! I thought it was cute <3
Ryuu Nijou - Killed by BR8K Spider!!!!!!!! this was self indulgent for me <3 he had to get a vriska track, i do in fact make the rules
Seodore Riddle - Empty Town and Judgement Day Chiptune draws more attention to the "game" aspect, and there's something compelling in with associating the immortal with an empty town... Something about time moving on without him Judgement day is half bc of the name (Judgement IS Seo's tarot card, after all) and It's just a fun fight track tbh
Hajime Hatsutori - Waterfall and Black quietly foreshadowing the end of this Divine Comedy. less of a character song and more of an atmosphere... Think like Ch 7-ish? Black is bc i am just.
Naming of the Flowerpots-era flowerpot trio - Moonsetter I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN THIS ONE i'm just right. Moonsetter fans understand me
Noriyuki Utsugi - Flare this is vibes based again. A quiet song, really just gives off record 7 vibes to me,, the bits of distortion throughout the track REALLY give off the energy of Utsugi bottling everything up and spiraling, trying to fix it all on his own,,
Sanemitsu Isoi - Heir of Grief am i biased in giving this to sanemitsu? yes. but guys hear me out. hear me out. it's bittersweet and has strong motifs and i cry over the piano parts. you can associate different motifs and sections with different parts of Sanemitsu's Life, whether it be living as Minoru Harada, Sanemitsu Isoi, or Code:DANTE. I'm so normal
and one for gavi bc she REALLY wanted me to use this track somewhere
Lin Orie - Theme of Andrew Hussie ( Let's Read a Webcomic ~ You're Welcome ) System.NH encourages metafiction themed songs, and thus Mr. N Portman has gotten Hussie's theme! also they're both green <3 It's an upbeat and fun theme!
Aogu Kanou - Amalgam fast bpm, a little bit of an unnerving song, which makes it a lot of fun <3!
Nina Yanagi - Requiem of Sunshine and Rainbows Heavy piano motif (yanagi core to me), has an underlying tone of determination to parallel her rising determination throughout A/S/S+ routes!
Rumeseo - Phantasmic Youngsters its the country vibes that did it,, it reminds me of their interlude track, it's just a cute song tbh

8:11 anon here again. Wow. W o w. Brain empty but just. Wow.
Went through all the endings and then had to go back to Arrival Point S to cope with all the other ones. And, as expected, the first ending and S destroyed me. Cried at least two times. My god. It's been a while since media made me cry, and I certainly didn't expect to get so emotionally invested in CoE.
However! I have questions!! Spoiler-y ones? If you don't mind, of course. Sorry if it's a lot?? I'm definitely going to re-watch everything again to connect whatever is left.
First off: is there a "canon" ending? Surely S is what everyone wishes to be canon (although E is pretty good too, in its own way, definitely wouldn't want it to be canon, though) but is there a defined one by the developers? Actually, what even is the first ending gotten before S?
Second: what triggers change the endings? I figure that for deaths it's mostly a matter of wasting time, which is really neat and genuinely puts urgency into the situation.
Connected to that, what's the blue-colored person speaking at the end of most endings? The one who "guides" the player on what they missed to try again?
Third: honestly what (and who) the hell is Kanou. Man shows up as quickly as he dies, reappears in like two endings, commits suicide in both. Is he just the local cryptid? A doll? There's something going on with him, between the Told You So death, the text about murdering coworkers at a previous lab, and his corpse disappearing (and, in specific endings, showing up as...human? Dialogue specifies that)
Fourth: you mention the DLC, but also Hermits Room and Interlude, however I don't see them in the playlist? Do they have to be played specifically as there's no uploads?
Fifth: wow Utsugi is so incredibly fruity. My god that guy is gay, good for him, good for him. That's not a question just need to state it. Also Sanemitsu being emotionally not there ever and Atou threatening him every five seconds. Peak dynamic, love them all so much. Shinano being happy. S ending my beloved
Sixth: I heard something about a...cipher? An art book cipher? Or an ARG? Idk but if you're willing to explain.
That's...it? Surely I have more questions but these are the main ones I can think of now. Again, sorry if this is a lot???
And!! Enjoy 8:11 whenever you get the time for it!! It was so fun to play and mind-boggling.
CONGRATS ON FINISHING AAAA!! i'll answer all these in order!! let me know if you need clarification on anything <3
Yes, there is a 'Canon' Ending'. S+ is considered the canonical ending! This actually answers the other part of this question: the Ch 8 Arrival point S goes through S (Future), which directly leads into S+ (Empyrean Point). The two endings are connected, and S needs to happen in order to achieve S+! OH ALSO. THERE ARE POST-S CHANGES, which i will put under the cut bc I have collected them <3 These technically happen in S+, but we don't see them bc we only check back in when Atou is in ch 8 already. The DLC (Records of Sanemitsu Isoi) takes place almost exactly 3 years after S+. (These are shown in the playlist after the Ch 4, 6, and 7 extras <3).
ENDING FLAGS: Fun bonus fact: the purple text will tell you what you missed, and this changes based on what you did wrong! S Root: get all the info, don't let anyone die. A Root: keep everyone alive but don't get all the info. Ensure that you have charged Shinano's Phone B Root: everyone alive but Shinano's phone was not charged or unlocked. C Root: Succeed in saving Yanagi. Fail in Saving Karen D Root: Succeed in Saving Karen. Fail in saving Yanagi E Root: EVERYONE DIES!! YIPPEEE Mx. Purple Text is something that you'll learn about in the DLC, so I'll RAFO you for now (Read and find out). It is purple specifically! (though i also made that interpeted it as blue at first sdajkldsjkal)
Kanou Flag: in Chapter Four, you can read Yuusuke Aiba's Journal without Kanou (this is shown in the extras for chapter 4). This starts the kanou flag. This is what triggers a couple of small changes surrounding Kanou (the quick flash of him in ch 6 comes to mind) and grants access to the kanou elevator scene. TLDR Kanou was infected with cells, which let him live a little longer, but not enough to grant abilities. They talk about dying as a 'human' because if he lives longer, his cells will morb and he'll become a doll or a creature. He also gives us a Note that says something like 'live for me'. This note gives us a buff during the origin beta boss fight (his "curse" protects atou <3)
The first Five records of the DLC (+ the intro) are in the playlist! for anything beyond that point, contact me here, on discord (@ ariapmdeol), or on twitter (@ AriaPMDEoL ) and I'll help you!
UTSUGI FOREVERRR HE'S SO. he makes me so emotional i love you noriyuki utsugi. Sanemitsu my darling my beloved he is trying but he also sucks so much <333 i love him. The Reiji-Sanemitsu-Haruki family means so much to me. they make me emotional UEEEE. S and S+ make me explode,,
YES there are ciphers!! there's an official artbook for COE (which unfortunately isn't being sold right now orz orz) Which has a few ciphers in it! The one that i was looking at is HORRIFICALLY warped (i genuinely don't think we were actually meant to solve it LMAO) but I solved it and a friend was kind enough to translate it for us! There is also a Cipher in DLC, and a few others in the DLC 2020 credits! I have solutions to all of those as well. It's less 'ARG' and more "here's some information hidden behind a cipher." They're not REQUIRED reading but they help a lot with theorizing, and I've been finding it to be a lot of fun :D
I CANNOT WAIT TO PLAY 8:11 I AM VERY EXCITED HEHEHE
OK POST S CHANGES ( you'll have seen one of these before). These are sorted by chapter. DON'T WORRY IF THESE DON'T MAKE SENSE TO YOU YET.

Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
This text has changed (both in normal vision and in Vision shift. it reads:[normal vision text] 'This is not the start of a nightmare but the end of a peaceful dream' and 'but what will you see when you wake' is added post S. Note
sanemitsu, 1, 2, and 3!
WELCOME BACK TO ARIA SANEMITSU-POSTS i hope you appreciate my delusions Spoilers for all of DLC!
(ask game questions are here!)
1. Why do you like or dislike this character? He's everything to me <3 He's so wonderfully three dimensional-- I really enjoy how he's written. It's in how he interacts with everyone and everything around him. I think my favorite thing is that he very very clearly changes his mind at times, his perspective on whats around him. I love his determination and his hesitation. The contrast between how he wanted to hold onto everyone he cares about, versus how he was unable to hold onto anyone successfully. His desperation in trying to save Reiji. his reluctance to take action in LDL. Everything with System.NH and all the things that have been hinted at for COM+2019. There's just so much history to everything, for him. It's all really fleshed out and it makes me soooo crazy <3
2. Favorite canon thing about this character? Favorite is a hard thing to narrow down! I already talked about how i like how he's written, so I'll go a different route for this one-- I like the metafiction! A game about stories, featuring a writer from a family of writers. A "recompiler" for System.NH (though we have yet to see that stuff in canon outside of the interlude reports). Just-- I love the dyanmics at play here. System.NH vs Mutei vs Seodore all have different opinions and goals for the canon timeline, and the push and pull between them makes me go so insane!!!
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character? Ironically there isn't anything that stands out to me as 'thing i dislike in the canonical depiction about Sanemitsu' -- one of the most critical aspects in COE is that everyone has their own reasons for doing things, but everyone is also wrong and makes mistakes and bad decisions. There is no such thing as a perfect person, and Sanemitsu is a really good example of that. I could say that I wish he treated Haruki better (which is true) but it's also critically important that he DIDN'T treat Haruki Isoi as his child. He's a flawed, scared man who didn't know how to handle his child being signed off for experimentation, behind his back. He asks Hajime in chapter 7, how is he supposed to be a father? How can he act like one when he's the last to know? When his thoughts, his feelings on everything, aren't seen as relevant? (can you tell I've been replaying lately KSDAJKLDAS) and this MATTERS. I'm not being too coherent here but tldr: i think it's difficult to narrow down a 'least favorite canon thing' because I think it all makes sense for him as a character, both as Minoru and as Sanemitsu. This isn't really an answer to your question but i had fun!!
