Review (SPOILERS)
We start this final volume with Keiko, and how she is afraid of becoming like her mother, because she restrains herself so much, she is repressing her true-self  feels like she is becoming a dull person. She envies Rika, who is more free and open with others. She feels like a coward because she is afraid of trusting another person, specifically Yuji Suwa, a boy at school who likes her and she keeps turning down, because she feels ugly and awkward. But she is okay with that, she is okay with having flaws she needs to work on.  She is able to stand up to her vision’s challenge and choose her friends over the easy path out.
Next we enter Sugawara vision and his crush on an older woman who runs an orphanage, named Sato. He gets involved with a couple of the kids there both named Hiro - and one of the boys reminds him of himself, jealous of the other boy who draws all the attention. Hiro holds no resentment as he is just happy to have a place to belong and not feel lonely. Then tragedy strikes, and one of the boys dies.
“Is this how much you cry... when you realize you’re not alone?”
Finally we flashback to the day of the school festival and where a girl jumped to her death... and we finally learn her identity and how it ties to the rest of the characters. Haruko Tsunoda, the girl Mizuki had a fight with and felt so badly about not knowing why. Haruko was a girl who was too stuck in her own head, she felt she needed to work hard to succeed, unfortunately all of her efforts don’t produce the results she wants and it is making her very neurotic. When her silly, carefree friend Mizuki gets better results that her, she starts to feel jealous and resentful, and paranoid. A misunderstanding leads to an excuse for Haruko to end the friendship... she really is just feeling anxiety and insecure about what others think and her future... she is allowing the pressure (she puts on herself) get to her.
Tanako confronts the vision and wakes to find their teacher Sakaki Sugawara is now there. The same Sugawara that was a kid with them, was really their teacher - his teenage appearence was a reflection of the creator’s intentions, the one who created this strange mental world, Mizuki.
“In this world Mizuki created, the one who is tormented most... is Mizuki herself.”
Mizuki was greatly affected by their fight and then Haruko’s suicide. Unlike the others whose memories and pain fade over time, for Mizuki it built up and was as if time itself had frozen. Mizuki was reaching out to her friends because she is torn between wanting to live and wanting to die. Tanako and Sakaki head back to the roof to find Mizuki ready to jump and we find out why she feels more guilt than the rest the rest. Haruko sent her a letter that day, a letter that in hindsight was a cry for help, but Mizuki wasn’t ready to talk to her and then she jumped - Mizuki blames herself for not meeting her on the roof that day, and the guilt is eating her alive. Takano talks to her to about living, we find out that he was that little orphan boy who watched his friend die and vowed to live and become a doctor and save people. She has them to lean her friends on and talk to so she can move forward.  Mizuki reaches out to Takano, but before she can be saved, a bloody version of herself pulls her over the edge.
Tumblr media
It is after midnight, Takano wakes up in his own room, he rushes out to Mizuki’s house where he find Sakaki trying to save a bleeding Mizuki - who has tried to commit suicide and who seems to have reached out to her friends during that night. After the ambulance arrives and takes her away, they find that all the others have also arrived at Mizaki’s - they remember the dream and woke up  knowing where to go.
We fast forward to graduation day, Takano and Keiko talk about the incident and theorize as to why what happened did, and why no one noticed Tsunoda’s downward spiral and vow to remember her and not forget by remembering her, talking about her, and especially talking about her with Mizuki and helping her heal and understand and forgive.
I really enjoyed the ending, and the feeling that as she was dying - her subconscious or something allowed her to reach out to create the dreamlike world with her friends as she struggle between wanting to live or die - and how she needed her friends to help her. Many of us have experience a sudden death when we are young and it can be difficult to really understand how to deal with it, if the person was just a casual classmate friend, it can even be easier to forget after time, it is unpleasant and sad and so we push it away and concentrate on the next test or post-graduation plans. It is also easy to forget that for others that loss was much greater and that it isn’t as east for them to forget, and they need your support to work out their complicated feelings. Mizaki needed that support, but her friends couldn’t see how much she needed it until it was almost too late.
