A few years ago while driving to another section of Ironwood Nat'l Monument we were all of a sudden on a road with hundreds of Sahuaros on both sides of the road for miles. They were so close together it was like looking at a forest! We were enthralled! This year we said we would definitely make this a hiking stop.
In addition to the Sahuaro immersion, one highlight was off-trailing up this steep, rocky hill - led by Bill - to the very top!
As a tip for any native english speakers who grew up outside of Arizona or southern California.
The correct English pronunciation of Saguaro gives the 'g' a sound like 'w', making it 'Sah-Wuar-Oh". I have seen it also written as 'Sahuaro' which IIRC is closer to the Spanish pronunciation.
