Things that surprised me as a European tourist in the United States
This is based on my experience as a Spaniard traveling to the United States (specifically New York City and Washington, D. C.).
Like many people around the world, I have grown up in contact with U.S. culture through literature, film, and music, so I didn't experience much cultural shock, but some things still surprised me.
All vehicles (cars, trucks, school buses...) are huge! Most cars are pickup trucks or SUVs. The most common brands came from the United States, but I also saw many Japanese cars, especially Nissan and Toyota (mostly Prius, USAmericans seem to love this model 😂).
Customer service is great, not only in restaurants or places where one is expected to leave a tip but also in museums and subway stations.
I heard many different languages spoken by locals, including Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish, as well as European languages spoken by tourists, such as French, German, and Portuguese. (I think that this is mostly the case in big cities, and especially NYC.) In general, the United States is more ethnically diverse than that in Europe, or at least Spain.
People wear face masks more often, although I guess that this is transient due to flu season. Still, way fewer people wear them in Spain.
Taxes are not included in the price. (I was aware of this but used to forget about it at first.)
Toilets are not as deep as in Europe (the water is really close to your butt 😖), and many flush automatically. Public restrooms always have seat covers but normally do not have a toilet lid.
The doors are really heavy! No wonder many people (mostly men) held them open for me. I once had to throw myself against the door to open it. What is the deal with doors in the U.S.? (Is it a NYC thing only?)
People were quite loud (and this is coming from someone who grew up in a country that is renowned for how loud we talk) and played music/videos without headphones in the subway 😑
Cops are surprisingly chill despite the reputation that they have. A guy was insulting a couple of them from across the subway platform, and they just smiled and waved at him. In Spain, it is a crime to insult a police officer, so I was surprised that they were so chill about the whole situation.
On that note, there were a lot of cops around the city at all times (even at 5 a.m.). I counted nine of them in Penn Station!
Drivers honk all the time because of every minor inconvenience. On Thanksgiving Day, there were a lot of traffic jams, and people were honking as if that would magically clear the streets... And, of course, if one person honked, the rest honked as well, so walking on the street on the main avenues was really deafening 😐
Traffic lights are quite far away from where cars have to stop.
Fire truck sirens are really loud and sound like emergency alarm systems. (It reminded me of those TikTok videos ranking them.)
People say "Excuse me" in the subway when going in or out, which was a nice change from the shoving and pushing I'm used to in Madrid.
I saw a lot of people carrying around huge reusable water bottles. (Here's an explanation for why USAmericans drink so much.)
Tumblr media
People called me "Ma'am" instead of "Miss". I know it's the polite way to address people, but it was very weird 😂
New Yorkers (maybe USAmericans in general) love to use cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) when giving directions. Someone once told me, "Go west on Broadway" and I was like "I have trouble orienting myself when I use Google Maps, do you think I know which direction I'm going in at all times??".
There are lots of caution signs about worker safety on construction sites, both in English and Spanish, which leads me to think that there are many work accidents 🤔
As a solo female traveler, I was a bit concerned about my security in a city that I have heard is dangerous and in a country where mass shootings are a relatively normal occurrence (unfortunately), but I felt mostly safe. I was surprised to see many posters that read, "If you see something, say something".
Related to the above, I was shocked to see "This is a gun free zone" posters in public places and "No guns allowed" posters on supermarket doors.
Tumblr media
I was really surprised to see ads with phone numbers with words in them, like the one below. After doing some research, I discovered they are called vanity numbers and are easier for people to remember. (If, like me, you're wondering how to dial these numbers, apparently you just press the number that corresponds to the letter on the keypad.)
Tumblr media
I smelled marijuana everywhere! Although illegal in Spain, you can also smell it sometimes, but it seemed ubiquitous in NYC. (I personally hate the smell, which is why I noticed.)

I love seeing the photons and hearing the details whenever you take a research trip. Any advice on traveling by yourself? I’m a single woman and don’t want that to hold me back from traveling. Do you have tips on how to travel safely but also not feel awkward, uncomfortable by yourself in situations that society tells us need to be done in couples/families.
It’s been an interesting experience, as I’ve never done a solo trip before, despite being intentionally single. I travelled across Japan with my brother, and otherwise I’ve always been with friends, my parents, or a publishing team. I met up with a few people in Venice by sheer coincidence on this trip, but I did Naples, Ischia, Capri and Rome by myself.
I don’t mind being alone, and I find I don’t feel awkward about it any more. I did for many years, but I’ve gone past that point. One thing I’ve loved about hitting 30 is that I just don’t care as much what strangers think of me any more. There are many reasons why someone might not be in a group or pair, and I doubt anyone will ask you about it or judge you. (I’m typing this from a restaurant in Rome and nobody is batting an eyelid at me.) The only time I’ve discussed it is when I got chatting to an Aussie solo female traveller on the hydrofoil from Ischia to Capri.
With travel safety, there is sometimes a slight feeling of danger when you’re alone as a woman. I listen to my instincts and always obey them, and I use common sense and caution as much as possible, e.g. not walking in unfamiliar areas alone after dark. If you feel nervous or uncertain about seeing tourist attractions by yourself, I’d recommend joining a tour group, which is what I did to visit Pompeii. They’re mostly quite affordable and you can use apps like Get Your Guide or Booking.com to make it easy. It also gives you the opportunity to chat to other people if you feel a bit isolated.

Solo Women Travelers
“YOU’RE SO BRAVE!”
When I tell people I’m traveling solo, that’s the most common response I get. And while it’s a well-intentioned comment, I’m irked that anyone still thinks a woman setting off alone might feel isolated or intimidated. In an ideal world, solo female travel wouldn’t be defiant or courageous, it would be simply a personal preference. In fact, when I take a trip by myself, my senses seem acutely tuned in to my environment, from the people I meet (or shy away from) to the streets I walk down (or skip).
Still, when we asked our readers and social communities what they learned on solo journeys, more than half of the women responded with tips on avoiding harm. And while 26 percent of millennial women have traveled by themselves, it’s a reality that women of all ages face certain vulnerabilities on the road. Like many of my friends, I take self-defense classes for peace of mind. Yes, the courses teach groin kicks or elbow strikes, but they (and our readers) also preach avoiding hazardous situations altogether.
Yet as I read the stories women shared, their enthusiasm for adventure and transcendence of fear impressed me the most. Reader Rita Pearson may have summed it up best: “Number one, safety first. Number two, just go!”

Sarah! I’m excited to be making plans to go to my very first Taylor concert and also nervous because I’m going alone. I’m not worried about the concert itself but I am very worried about how to get back to the hotel safely afterwards. Do you have any tips or suggestions since you have done this before? I would appreciate it!
Hi friend! That's so fun that you're planning on going alone - I always love and recommend a solo concert experience. They're just so fun and a whole different time.
I guess I would say it depends on where you are (are you travelling to a place you're entirely unfamiliar with?) but my general rule of thumb as a solo female traveler is be aware of your surroundings (don't be on your phone/have headphones in), keep your belongings in a small bag with a zipper close to your body, research ahead and maybe have a few plans in place for how you're going to get from various points in your journey (if I can't get a cab, this is the bus loop that will take me closest to my hotel at that time of night), and let people know your plan! "In a cab, should be at my hotel in XX minutes. Will let you know when I'm there."
Solo travel does not need to be scary. Just practice general self awareness and safety measures and do your research on the area so you know what you're walking into.

I've been following you for a while and I've noticed you are constantly travelling by yourself, and most of the time your trips are long and to locations that are kind of far from where you live, and I was wondering if you had any tips, in terms of precautions and/or safety, for travelling solo as a female? How to book the right place to stay the night, what kind of things to carry in your bag, how to dress, that kind of stuff
Okay so I'm actually just pretty lucky lmao I'm not always doing the safest things when I'm traveling. But I will give a run down of some of the stuff I do!!
I always say spending a little more money on hotels is worth it because they're typically cleaner and safer. I go through and check for all the normal stuff when I get to the hotel like if the locks work, if the mirrors are real, if there's any sketchy looking things that might be cameras, etc. I always make sure to use every lock that's on the door and normally put something in front of it so I can hear if it gets moved.
As scary as this is, I typically don't carry any sort of weapons with me when I travel because I'm usually flying. When I drive somewhere I always have my pepper spray and taser. At the hotel I usually find something sturdy enough to be used as a weapon and keep it near. When I'm camping out at shows, I don't walk anywhere alone. I stay with the big group and get food delivered to me or if I have a rental car with me I usually feel pretty safe to go places alone.
I always share my location with a family member and keep them up to date on what my plan is, who I'm with, and where I'm at. Every time I leave the hotel I send the family member a text, if I decide I want to go get food after a show I let them know, when my plane lands or is getting ready to take off.
As for what clothes I wear, I usually stay comfortable and don't wear anything that draws attention. I'm always wearing vans or birkenstocks so I can take off running if I need to. If I'm dressed for a concert I go straight to the car and lock the doors/stay in a place where there is plenty of people to witness something if I'm taking an Uber.
I can't think of much else at the moment so feel free to send me more questions!!
