Reposted from @ajplus Indigenous leaders from the Osage Nation in Missouri are calling out the sale of a sacred cave with 1,000-year-old drawings. "Picture Cave", near the town of Warrenton, used to be the site of sacred rituals and burials. It features more than 290 prehistoric glyphs, including drawings of people, animals and mythical creatures. ⁣

The Osage Nation hoped to buy the cave and its land — which were privately owned — to protect and preserve the sacred site. Instead, it was auctioned off to an unnamed bidder for $2.2 million. ⁣

"Auctioning off a sacred American Indian site truly sends the wrong message," said Carol Diaz-Granados, research associate in the anthropology department at Washington University in St. Louis. "It's like auctioning off the Sistine Chapel." ⁣

In a statement, the Osage Nation said the sale was "truly heartbreaking."⁣

⁣

"This was our land," the statement said. "We have hundreds of thousands of our ancestors buried throughout Missouri and Illinois, including Picture Cave." ⁣

⁣

The St. Louis-based company handling the auction said on its website that it is "the largest collection of Indigenous people's polychrome paintings in Missouri."⁣
