Fucking Finally

After a long time, I think I’ve managed to put together what will be chapter two of “Why the Hell Do You Think I Drew Attention to my Sword?”

Hey! I'm re-reading (for the third time I think) "If Anyone Pulls One of Those Sticks on Us, Burn it" and I just realized something. Olivier mentions about her family finding out hers and Roy's relationship, and the way it's phrased implies that it was quite an interesting event, and I was wondering if you were planning on wiritng about it. I’m so glad you noticed that! Yes, that scene is actually one of the things I want to write about Roy and Olivier’s relationship :D It’s actually been in my head from the beginning. I want to write a couple of scenes before that, though, mainly for context and also some relationship development reasons.

Explain Yourself Ch. 2

I’m continuing this story to show some of the development of Roy and Olivier’s relationship, as I mentioned I might do. I have to say, this chapter didn’t turn out anything like what I’d been expecting. I’m not very sure of the result, so I’d really appreciate any feedback you can give me.

I have some chapters for this planned, namely the time immediately after the Promised Day and its many consequences. We’ll see after that.

Roy/Olivier... I can't really see her ever committing to a relationship. I think she'd go for physical relationships, but not be interested in the romantic/emotional aspect. He's a lot softer than she is. They have things in common in regards to their leadership styles, but I can't see them being more than partners in crime. I can't see her settling for anyone, really. If they ever had a thing, I don't think either would be totally invested in it. It'd be pretty casual - no commitment involved.

I have to thank you for sending this in, anon, because this brings up my issues with romantic relationships in general, but in reverse :)

One of the reasons I even considered working on this story seriously was precisely why you say you can’t see these two working in a committed relationship: sometimes, when reading romance, it feels as though many people think there is One True Way of being in a romantic relationship, and that commitment implies a series of pre-established, immutable characteristics that must be fulfilled. I disagree with this mindset. I believe relationships, and this includes committed relationships, can be as varied and different as the people you can find out there.

I think you’re right in saying that Olivier wouldn’t settle for what is seen as the traditional committed romantic relationship, however that is not the relationship I am writing here. Olivier does have emotions, she is not the unfeeling ice statue we so often see, even if she displays these emotions very scarcely, and it’s true that Roy is softer than she is, but relationships aren’t all about one’s approach to emotions and how they display them; they are also about one’s circumstances and other life goals.

When I read romance, I often see how the relationship becomes the main focus of the characters’ lives, above other things they may have cared about. Often, one of them, if not both, pushes other life goals aside in favor of the relationship. I don’t think this behavior is healthy for a long-term relationship in real life because, while it’s true that a relationship requires commitment and effort on both parts, having it be the main focus of your life to the point of neglecting other things you care about is very likely to end up in resentment once the initial honeymoon phase of the relationship passes.

Here I’m trying to write a working, believable relationship between Roy and Olivier while staying as true to their characters as I can manage. This means I’m not working with the pre-established notions of what a romantic relationship is and isn’t or what it requires of the parties involved. This relationship is very much unconventional, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a committed relationship. We’ll have to wait until the story is complete to see how well I manage to do it, but that is one of my objectives with this story.
