CHRISTIAN DIOR FALL/WINTER 2004 COUTURE
Vienna,Istanbul back from a trip in Central Europe, John Galliano proposes his very free vision for a collection that mixes romantic 19t-century references, resuscitating Empress Elisabeth Sisi of Austria, the glamour of 1950s pin-ups and Zsa Zsa Gabor, stated the Dior Fall Winter 2004 Haute Couture Collection.
Imagine a stately parade of Austrian and Hungarian princesses competing with one another for precedence in outrageously ornate corseted gowns, their crowns slightly askew. Tottering under the weight of pounds of elaborate fabric, skirt flounces the width of the runway, bank vaults of jewelry, and 6 inch platforms, Christian Dior's models pulled off a spectacle that held the audience breathless in case someone fell. So vast and encased were the frocks that at one point, Karolina Kurkova actually got stuck in the exit and had to be manhandled off.
"I went on a research trip to Vienna, and then got to looking at Egon Schiele, and Empress Sisi, and Russia!" was John Galliano's explanation. Strangely, in spite of the mind blowing succession of hobbled, hourglass silhouettes, blown up with massive outcrops of Edwardian swags and drapes and gigantic fur trimmed opera coats, this was a pared-down Dior Couture in several senses. Galliano ditched the Leigh Bowery meets kabuki makeup in favor of powdered faces, and the dresses, for all their rich embroidery, crystal chunks, and hand-painted cherubs and birds, gave a new sense of the body beneath.
In that way, it was easier to make the imaginative leap from runway to real event (perhaps one of those royal weddings that have enthralled Europe this summer?) than was usual in previous Dior Couture extravaganzas. This show also made a heady, sensuous display of color, brick red, emerald, celadon, boie de rose, and more-and an opulent celebration of couture-crafted textures, often enhanced to look as if the girls were actually wearing the gilded upholstery and painted ceilings of an imperial palace. On the other hand, it was also essentially a show of one queenly message, repeated 28 times. And that, for Galliano, displayed an odd lack of variety.
For his most stately collection yet, the designer 'put on a regal display of mermaid silhouetted robes accessorised with crowns, orbs, diamonds and long white gloves that made humble subjects of his A-list audience, Vogue reported.
The most luxurious materials were used: silks, brocades, moires, taffeta and velvets, trimmed with sable, ermine and fox, adorned with peacock feathers and delicately embroidered or hand-painted with designs reminiscent of 18th-century motifs inspired by Sevres porcelain and Faberge eggs.
Trompe-loil effects such as flesh - colored bustiers also peppered the collection, while gravity-defying pleats and gathers on dramatic evening gowns showcased the skills of Dior's Haute Couture Atelier.

inspired by recent misinformed cottagecore articles....
Marie Antoinette did not pretend to be a peasant at the hameau de la reine
She did “pretend” in the sense that at the hameau de la reine, she allowed herself to behave like a regular elite woman who wasn’t bound by the very specific rules and societal expectations for a Queen of France. But there were no aristocratic ladies milking cows into porcelain milk buckets or Marie Antoinette tending to perfumed sheep with a decorative shepherdess crook or similar actions that have taken on their own mythology in the past 150+ years or so.
Instead, Marie Antoinette used the estate as a private place where she could be the elite mistress of a countryside estate; a status which emphasized embracing aristocratic oversight of agricultural production as a way for (wealthy) people to turn away from their “modern” city and court lives. Marie Antoinette took things a step further than similar estates by not hiding the agricultural production and instead creating a miniature world where the production was directly connected to the end result--serving at tables or in the Refreshments dairy.
At the hameau de la reine, just as it was at the Petit Trianon chateau and gardens, there was no “Versailles” etiquette. Everything was “simpler,” but not in an attempt to be peasant like: it was an attempt to recreate the relatively private aristocratic life she enjoyed in Vienna as a child, a life that was impossible in traditional court spaces in France. As Marie Antoinette is supposed to have said about the Trianon as a whole: “Here I am myself.”
Things we know Marie Antoinette did at the hameau de la reine: inquired about the output of the gardens and animals, responded to requests on part of the estate manager, approved or corrected plans; had dairy products served and tested by her and selected people in the Refreshments Dairy; brought her children to the estate and showed them the gardens and animals as agricultural lessons; enjoyed private meals using product and dairy products produced at the hamlet; took walks with her family or chosen companions; played music and arranged for concerts; held public events on Sundays which were opened to local people, particularly aimed at providing amusements for children; etc.
Pierre de Nolhac, The Trianon of Marie Antoinette:
This is the truth concerning the royal amusements that legend has transformed into farcical comedies: there is no evidence for the improbable masquerade as shepherds and shepherdesses … No one ever saw the Queen playing the farm wife, nor the great nobles of her Court disguised as bailiffs, millers, and gamekeepers. These parts were played by them on the stage only, and did not cross the footlights of the little theatre.
Tumblr media
Now I think the argument can be definitely be made that modern cottagecore and 18th century hameau, ferme ornée, cottage ornee, etc etc similar estates, are related or share similarities. And I am making a post on that as soon as this big work order is done! But there were no pretend peasant shenanigans involved at the hameau de la reine.

Edmund de Waal at Gagosian Hong Kong
November 11, 2020
Tumblr media
EDMUND DE WAAL cold mountain clay Opening reception: Friday, November 20, 6–8pm November 20, 2020–January 9, 2021 __________ Solitude is exacting. I read [the verses] out, wrote them, effaced them, worked on them, trying to find the amount of white space around a poem so that the words emerge. . . . These works are my way of writing on a cave wall. —Edmund de Waal Gagosian is pleased to present cold mountain clay, an exhibition of new and recent works by Edmund de Waal. A potter since childhood and an acclaimed writer, de Waal makes porcelain works that function as repositories of human memory and experience. Drawing equally from Eastern and Western traditions, de Waal’s works blend a minimalist visual language with invocations of the written word, positing the act of collection—of objects, texts, materials, and thoughts—as an artistic form. The exhibition takes its title from the famed Cold Mountain poems, a series of verses by the monk Hanshan, who, according to legend, lived as a recluse on a Chinese mountaintop during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE). Composed with diaristic frankness and intensity, the poems address the unavoidable passage of time and trace the introspective state that comes with monastic solitude.
Inspired by Hanshan’s practice of writing on rocks, tree trunks, and cave walls—thereby letting the elements erode his verses—de Waal’s new works are made through a cycle of inscription and effacement. He begins by coating a wood panel in liquid kaolin; while the slip is still wet, he floats flecks of gold leaf and writes lines of Hanshan’s poetry in graphite, oil stick, and charcoal. He then brushes these marks with additional layers of slip, repeating the process multiple times to produce a “fugitive poem,” a palimpsest of text that emulates the haze of memory. Exhibited with this new series will be a selection of wall-mounted and freestanding works, some of which were included in elective affinities, de Waal’s installation at the Frick Collection, New York, in 2019. Made in white or black porcelain, the vessels are arranged alongside elements of gold, alabaster, marble, or steel. Held in space within vitrines, their spatial variations evoke musical scores or poetic stanzas. De Waal’s installation library of exile is on view at the British Museum in London until January 12, 2021. Originally presented at the Ateneo Veneto in 2019 during the 58th Biennale di Venezia, the library—a porcelain-covered pavilion housing more than two thousand books by exiled authors throughout history—traveled to the Japanisches Palais in Dresden, Germany, later the same year. Edmund de Waal was born in 1964 in Nottingham, England, and lives and works in London. Collections include the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford, England; Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, England; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Germany; Jewish Museum, Berlin; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Exhibitions include Edmund de Waal at Waddesdon Manor, Aylesbury, England (2012); On White: Porcelain Stories from the Fitzwilliam, Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, England (2013); Atmosphere, Turner Contemporary, Margate, England (2014); white: a project by Edmund de Waal, Royal Academy of Arts, London (2015); During the Night, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (2016); white island, Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa, Ibiza, Spain (2018); –one way or other–, Schindler House, Los Angeles (2018); elective affinities, Frick Collection, New York (2019), and psalm, Museo Ebraico and Ateneo Veneto, Venice (2019). In 2018, de Waal created his first set design, for Yugen, a ballet by choreographer Wayne McGregor, at the Royal Opera House, London. De Waal is also renowned for his family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010), which won the RSL Ondaatje Prize and the Costa Biography Award, among others, and has been translated into over thirty languages. Other titles include a Tate critical study on Bernard Leach (1997), 20th Century Ceramics (2003), The Pot Book (2011), and The White Road (2015). In 2015, de Waal was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for nonfiction by Yale University. _____ Edmund de Waal, Wu-chüeh: two poems, 2020, kaolin, gold leaf, graphite, compressed charcoal, and oil stick on ash, in aluminum frame, 36 1/4 × 26 × 3 inches (92 × 66 × 7.5 cm) © Edmund de Waal
