"Havsfrun was so beautiful that there is no earthly being that is as beautiful [as her]. She has golden hair, blue eyes, red cheeks, the upper body is like that of a human and the lower body like that of a fish. She used to come aboard the ship and hang by the rail, it was when she wanted salt. The skipper then threw a bushel of salt into the ocean, and then she dove down immediately and disappeared."

IMAGES: Swedish and F-35 Danish Gripen perform first inter-ally exercises of 5ª generation
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 15/03/2024 - 18:16in Military
For the first time as NATO Allies, Danish F-35 fighters and Swedish JAS39 Gripen fighters flew air combat training exercises in Danish airspace on March 11 and 13.
The training missions showed close military cooperation between the Danish and Swedish air forces and also demonstrated efforts to integrate and interact with different generations of fighters in the Nordic countries. The exercises were mainly conducted in separate training areas on the waters of Kattegat. They consisted of one-on-one fighter maneuvers and coordinated flight of Danish F-35s from the Skrydstrup Fighter Wing and two JAS39 Gripen from 'Blekinge Flygflottilj' in Ronneby, near Karlskrona, in southern Sweden.
Tumblr media
Cooperation is based on a mutual interest of the two nations through the Oresund, making use of experience and skills to strengthen the combined power of air warfare.
"Because we are neighbors and close allies, using each other's capabilities not only provides great training value for pilots and personnel, but is also visible proof of the ambition to be able to operate effectively together," says Major General of the Danish Air Force, Jan Dam.
The training exercises involving the JAS39 produced by Sweden and the F-35 produced by the United States highlight the need to ensure that existing and new combat aircraft fleets are able to cooperate and interact on the modern battlefield.
Tumblr media
"The Gripen and F-35 belong to two different generations of combat aircraft and therefore have different characteristics to contribute to the battlefield. As a fifth-generation combat aircraft, the F-35 has the special ability to collect and process huge amounts of data, which it can later share with other allies and actors," explains Lieutenant-Colonel Casper Borge Nielsen, head of the Combat Flight Department of the Allied Air Command.
He went on to say that the integration between the F-35 and the Gripen increases the combined operational capabilities, because the F-35 is able to generate and share an unprecedented situational image, from which the Gripen can also benefit. On the other hand, the Gripen represents an advanced combat aircraft that brings more firepower to combat. This will benefit both fifth and fourth generation combat aircraft and, in a broader perspective, will give land and naval forces the opportunity to operate with more freedom and efficiency.
Tumblr media
"Performing this type of exercise flying with another type of aircraft provides different challenges and experiences than when it is normally practiced against our own units," said Lieutenant-Colonel Erik Almquist, Commander of the 172º Swedish Air Force Fighter Squadron. “Cooperation with Danish pilots has been very easy and uncomplicated. The biggest challenge was to decide whether we should speak English or Danish/Swedish on the phone during the briefing and debriefing,” he said, adding that on the air, radio communications are made, of course, in English. "This week's exercises were the beginning of an increased cooperation where the proximity of the divisions in Skrydstrup and the simplicity of the cooperation provide good conditions for us to develop and strengthen our ability to fight together as a 'Nordic Air Force'," he concluded.
"We found our Swedish colleagues in Danish airspace to fly Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM), also known as 1-on-1 air combat training," says TRI, one of the Danish F-35 pilots of the Skrydstrup Fighter Wing in southern Jutland. He added that this creates different requirements and challenges when training against an unknown opponent. "Most of the time, we fly BFM against our own F-35 pilots. The Gripen and the Swedish pilots fly differently, so a 1-on-1 match against them is a professional challenge. We can test elements of our own tactics that we don't normally do. It's amazing! And of course it's great to meet the Swedes in Denmark," concluded TRI.

In the fall of 2023, Denmark received the first four F-35 fighters on Danish soil, while six aircraft are still located in the US for training flights. In total, Denmark has invested in 27 F-35 fighters, of which the remaining 17 are expected to be delivered in the coming years.

Ronneby Trail
Source

Karlskrona, Sweden (No. 9)
The island on which Karlskrona was built, Trossö, was owned during the 17th century by the farmer Vittus Andersson. On the mainland a couple of kilometers from there, during the Danish era, there was another, older town called Lyckå and a couple of miles from there, the Danes had started to build Kristianopel before Blekinge became Swedish in 1658 . Until 1679, the island and the nearest islets were owned by the farmer Vittus Andersson, who was now forced to sell his properties to the Swedish crown, and in the same year plans were started to place most of the kingdom's fleet on Trossö. The new city, Karlskrona city , was named after its founder Karl XI as well as Landskrona. Its location was strategic with controlled connections to the mainland and in 1681 military fortifications were erected on the seaward framing archipelago to protect the naval base. The fact that Sweden wanted to locate its navy here was of course due to the fact that it wanted to manifest a position of power close to Denmark and the European continent. In addition, the harbor is ice-free most of the year.
On August 10, 1680 Karlskrona received its city privileges , while Ronneby , which previously lost its when Kristianopel was built, meant that Karlskrona's trade and growth increased as many of its inhabitants were forced to move there. People from Christianople also flocked after their Danish city was destroyed by the Swedes. Karlskrona also benefited from several years of customs freedom during its construction. Shipbuilders for the new naval base with shipyards were brought from Ostrobothnia and Stockholm .
In 1682, bridges were built that connected the city center with the mainland. At the founding of the Admiralty Church in 1685, the Navy's music corps was mentioned for the first time via its predecessors, the Admiralty Musicians. This makes the orchestra the country's second oldest cultural institution. Only the Royal Court Chapel is older.
The first town plan, drawn up in 1683 by Erik Dahlbergh , Hans Wachtmeister and Carl Magnus Stuart , shows Karlskrona as a pure fortress. The 1694 plan by Erik Dahlberg, which was later followed, also provided space for urban development.
Karlskrona soon became the kingdom's third largest city, after Riga in present-day Latvia and Stockholm.

Swedish Gripen perform in-flight refuelling tests with NATO A330 MRTT
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/08/2022 - 21:03in Military
The Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV), together with NATO, is conducting air refueling tests with the JAS39 C/D Gripen with the NATO Multimission Fleet and its A330 MRTT aircraft.
The goal is to validate the air refueling function by doing flight tests with connections and in-flight refueling.
“So far, the campaign has worked very well. Above all, cooperation with the NATO Multi Mission Unit, the team that operates the aircraft, was characterized by a great openness and positive spirit," says Joakim Hamilton, from FMV.
Air refuelling tests take place in airspace in southern Sweden. Swedish JAS39 C/D aircraft equipped with measurement fly from the F17 squadron in Ronneby, while NATO aircraft fly from Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The operation is carried out on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces.
The Airbus A330MRTT is the new NATO aircraft that can transport passengers, cargo and also refuel other aircraft, which makes it very versatile. The aircraft is based on the Airbus A330 civil, which is used both for passenger transport and as a cargo aircraft. The interesting thing in this case is that the NATO aircraft was acquired jointly by several NATO countries.
Responsible ?? for the airworthiness of the joint aircraft are military from the Netherlands. The A330 MRTT aircraft is also registered in the Netherlands.
“FMV has employees on site in Eindhoven to support and coordinate operations, as we are not located in the same location. It's a challenge," says Joakim Hamilton. "The funny thing is that NATO has been the driving force in its contacts with us to carry out these tests. They want to be able to use their fleet of tankers in an optimized way. In addition, the Czech Republic, for example, helped finance the replenisher program. The Czech Republic, which operates JAS39 C/D, wants to be able to use "its" tankers to refuel its own aircraft. All parties think this is important and we find good forms of cooperation.
Tumblr media
In previous air refuelling tests against other refueling aircraft, FMV paid for the entire certification. In this current phase of testing, NATO covers its costs and FMV covers its own costs.
Being able to refuel in the air brings great gains since aircraft can be used for different missions, increasing availability, because tasks can be performed with fewer planes than would be necessary if the planes were forced to descend at an airport and land to refuel.
But the tests take time, cost money and must be completed before the need arises.
"The need becomes clearer if it is a resource that is used every day. But we want to be at the forefront and be prepared, so that we can refuel in the air, if necessary, in future missions," says Joakim Hamilton.
Air refuelling tests require preparation. First on paper, where it is evaluated if the equipment fits and if the plane can fly at the same height and at the same speed. The equipment is then connected to the ground.
"When it is ready, flight tests are performed to check if the systems work together or if there are deficiencies that need to be corrected," adds Joakim.
"Refueling in the air is a relatively difficult task that requires regular training. This time, we will also try to refuel in the dark, which we didn't do very often. If it is difficult to refuel during the day, it is even more difficult to refuel in the dark, which requires experience and concentration," says Joakim.
When the tests are over, the legal part follows, where you write an agreement to buy services from each other and, in part, agree on things like talking on the radio and what level of training those who perform the replenishment should have.
As the Airbus A330MRTT is available in European NATO countries, validation also interests more countries that use the JAS39 C/D.
"In our approval, we also received our export customers, Hungary and the Czech Republic. They help finance everything through our support agreements. Putting everyone on the same board saves a lot of time and money," concludes Joakim Hamilton.
