A knock on the metal door had Law lift his head from the medical books he was reading. He glanced at the clock in his office, softly sighing while closing some of his books after seeing it was just after 3am. Tonight had been the first time in a few weeks she had been late, and of course, it had to be on a day like today.
“Captain? Can I come in?” Risen asked in a soft voice. Law’s eyes moved to look over at the door while narrowing slightly.
“I already told you that you don’t need to ask and that you don’t need to call me Captain when we’re in private,” he answered, his voice soft despite the chilly expression on his face. He watched anxiously as Risen pushed open the metal door with some difficulty, his lips pressed together and his fingers twitching.
“Right… sorry, force of habit,” she stated with a small laugh while stepping into his office, the metal door closing behind her.
“You don’t need to apologize either,” he sighed while standing up, his eyes locked on her.
“Sor- I-I mean… okay,” she muttered with a small smile while walking toward him. Once the door closed with a click, Law took a few big strides toward Risen to meet her halfway and pulled her into a tight hug. He leaned his head down to nuzzle into her fluffy hair and smell the shampoo she used, all the tension in his body seemingly disappearing.
Risen didn’t hesitate to hug him back, wrapping her arms around him just above the hips. “Rough day?” she asked softly while rubbing his back.
“You have no idea,” he sighed while closing his eyes. “Having a rough night again?” he muttered against the crown of her head.
“… Yeah,” she whispered after a moment.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked, lifting his head to look down at her. Instead of answering verbally, she shook her head while hugging him tighter again.
Law sighed softly while gently pulling away from hugging her. “Do you want to sit with me while I work?” he asked, intertwining his fingers with hers, already knowing her answer as he led her over to his desk.
“Yeah… I’d like that,” Risen whispered as she squeezed his hand. “Do you want to talk about your day?”
“Not really. I’d rather just have you sit with me right now,” Law answered while sitting at his desk, pulling Risen onto his lap.
“Alright,” Risen responded softly, leaning against his chest as he opened one of his medical books. “Do you want me to read with you?”
“Only if you want to,” he answered, resting his chin on her head.
