Title: Saying Goodbye 2: Electric Boogaloo
Description: Although the duo doesn’t want this to happen, sadly, it has to.
{Spoilers for what happens at the end of Explorers, again}
———
As the Riolu heads down the path with the Chimchar to reach the Rainbow Stoneship, the Riolu knew something that Storm didn’t. The whole time, Cloud had wanted to tell xem—but didn’t exactly know how to drop that onto the Chimchar.
Xe would get on—Storm would manage to get back to Treasure Town and then the Guild. But, xe would have to do all of this alone. Cloud wouldn’t be there. Cloud wouldn’t be returning this time.
Thought’s were rushing through Cloud’s mind, although the Riolu was only focusing on a couple. How would Storm deal with this? Would xe be okay?
Grovyle was likely to disappear, too—maybe he already had... Cloud didn’t know. After the Riolu were to disappear, would Cloud get to see him again? If so, maybe the two wouldn’t be separated again. It had happened twice—and that was enough.
But... Cloud did wish that none of this had to happen. None of this disappearing stuff—no betrayal from Dusknoir or anything. While it would be nice—and preferred, from the both of them—for all of them to be together with no issues—sadly, that wasn’t ever going to be the case.
While Cloud had only just started to notice the bits of golden light appearing—there was one thing that the Riolu had failed to notice: Cloud had stopped walking. The Riolu did have to admit, though, that for a while, everything had been feeling heavy.
Storm had noticed, though.
“Cloud?” The Chimchar hesitantly spoke up, approaching the Riolu. “Is something the matter? Are you okay? We’re... we’re almost to the Rainbow Stoneship.”
While a part of Storm wanted to think that everything was fine—the other parts didn’t believe that. Cloud was practically surrounded in a golden light... that didn’t seem like a good or normal thing.
If it actually was a normal thing—at least for Cloud—then xe figured that xe would’ve seen that happen at some point—or, that Cloud would’ve at least mentioned it at some point.
‘I should’ve told you earlier, Stormy.’ The Riolu started to sign, ‘I’m sorry about this, but I won’t be able to be with you any longer. I’ll be disappearing soon enough.’
The Chimchar‘s tail dropped, and xe frowned, moving closer to the Riolu’s side. “What...?” Storm whispered, “What... do you mean...? Is-... Is this some sort of joke?”
‘I wouldn’t joke about something like this.’ Cloud’s head shook. ‘The future has been changed, Storm. And, unfortunately, that means all future Pokémon will have to disappear. I’m among that group.’
“Y-Y... You CAN’T-“ The Chimchar’s flame began to grow—and—at the same time, Storm was suddenly pulled into a hug from the Riolu.
Storm fell silent. While the hug was certainly nice—especially after learning something horrible like that—it still surprised xem.
Cloud had never been one for hugs—or much of any physical contact at all—when xe had decided to ask once, Cloud had simply told the Chimchar that it just wasn’t something that was liked.
‘I don’t want to go, Storm. I know you don’t want me to go, either. I’m sorry about this. But it’s what has to happen.’ Storm finally returned the hug.
The hug lasted for a few more seconds, before Cloud was the first to pull away. ‘You’ll be okay without me. After this, it’s going to be okay, even if it’s... just a little different without me.’
The light around the Riolu was growing stronger. The next thing that happened shocked the Chimchar—it was something that xe had never really expected.
As Cloud smiled at Storm, reaching over to hold the Chimchar’s hand, a simple phrase escaped from the Riolu’s lips. “I love you, Storm.”
Storm stared... but with what little time was left, the Chimchar pushed all of the thoughts away, and focused on Cloud and the words themselves—and not the fact that Cloud had just spoken for the first—and last time, ever.
Just as Cloud was finally disappearing, Storm hurried to say something xemself—Cloud needed to know this, just like how Storm needed to—it was the final chance and moment this could ever be said.
“I-... I love you too, Cloud.”
As the Riolu’s smile grew at those words, Cloud finally disappeared with the light—leaving the Chimchar all alone, xe beginning to wipe at xer eyes as tears started to fall.

[Text reads from Julia: Oh I got an idea, if lucario had a regional variant/evo/paradox form what would you come up with]
It's extremely basic but my default concept is a fighting/psychic or fighting/ghost type that leans more into the concept of Aura than martial arts, with aura visibly bursting out of limbs and such. I tried to pull a bit of influence from depictions of Anubis by changing how the hair tassel things drape and by trying to loosely mimic a shendyt with the fur (which itself was an idea inspired by Mega Lucario), but I think the concept needs more work.
I think to evolve you simply need a Riolu with high friendship at night, or maybe specific locations with high spiritual energy or something, like Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town.
I think what I really drew though was a basketball variant and this boy's ready to shoot some hoops

Araceli's shiny adventures update? Araceli's shiny adventures update. I was too run down by work to do an update for each new addition to her menagerie during the week so uh. Have a short hand version! I'll go back and ramble about the individual 'mons later. All of these are either outbreak or random encounter finds.
We have, in order of catches:
Mahees the Pyroar (caught as a Litleo, #49)
Wilbur the Oinkologne (random encounter, #50)
Nala the Litleo (#51)
Roksana the Fletchling (#52)
Anubis the Riolu (#53)
Wepwawet the Lucario (caught as a Riolu, #54)
Jade the Noibat (#55)
Tabi the Furret (#56)
Jun the Mienshao (caught as a Mienfoo, #57)
Li the Mienfoo (#58)
Howie the Noivern (caught as a Noibat, #59)
Last week was a very, very productive week. Might take a bit of a break from hunting this week... but probably not. The next part of the DLC will hit just before I go on vacation and there are still a ton of shinies on my list that I haven't caught yet.

The Riolu Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, this one’s sure to be a hot topic. Riolu is a pure Fighting type, and one themed around the idea of ‘aura,’ a sort of emanation from the soul that, in the context of Pokemon, fuels fighting prowess and energy-based attacks, similar to Ryu Street Fighter’s Hadouken. Riolu’s alright for… whatever it’s supposed to be. It’s some kind of animal mascot kid, almost being a striking resemblance to Klonoa. Truthfully, though, it seems like its Riolu’s evolution who was designed first, and then Riolu was made after to give it a cutesy kid form. I only say this knowing how said evolution has been treated in marketing, so I’m inclined to think that may indeed have been the origin story. Otherwise, Riolu doesn’t really seem to have much basis in its design and just kind of exists. Alright.
Tumblr media
Lucario, though, appears, vaguely, to be based on Anubis, being a humanoid creature with the head of a wolf. Its other connections to the Egyptian god, though, are tenuous at best, and don’t seem to draw a solid connection between the two designs.
Even besides that, Lucario does not strike me as an especially appealing or interesting design. I can see what they were going for, that being some humanoid animal taking on the role of a martial arts master, but…it comes across as being incredibly muddles and cobbled together. Several people, including myself, have taken issue with the weird dreadlock-like shapes attached to the back of Lucario’s head, but after looking at the markings on its head I’m inclined to believe those are supposed to resemble the ends of a headband, I think? Headbands are typically associated with martial artists, again, see Ryu, so I feel like that was the intention here, but considering how bulbous they are it just seems very odd.
In fact, the rest of the solid, straight black lines on Lucario’s body are pretty unappealing, and make the design seem a lot flatter and unnatural than it should. The black on Lucario’s paws is fine, that looks like it blends with the blue of its arms well enough. Why isn’t its head, waist, or shoulders like that too? The weirdly yellow fur on its torso has some ruffle detail, so why doesn’t the rest of its fur? Oh, and the tail. That’s, uh, a pretty pathetic wolf tail if you ask me, Lucario. Yeesh. Riolu’s looked a lot better, maybe thanks to its smaller size letting the tail appear bigger by comparison. This one just looks thin and plasticy, just stuck onto Lucario’s backside.
There’s also the weird thing going on with its legs. Why does it look like Lucario is wearing shorts?? Why is there such a divide between its actual legs and what I’m guessing is fur?? What’s the decision with that design??
Tumblr media
…oh. Yeah, that deserves mention too. Lucario just has. An awful nose and mouth placement. Why it wasn’t given a proper canine snout is beyond me, maybe in an attempt to make it look more human? I’m sorry but from any angle that isn’t the original 3/4 it was drawn in it just looks. Really unappealing.
Tumblr media
You may ask, why am I being so critical of this one Fighting type that doesn’t seem to warrant so much in-detail criticism and dissection? Well, Lucario was, for whatever reason, chosen to be one of the poster children for Gen 4, and even Pokemon as a whole since it continues to enjoy quite a bit of good press even these days. Lucario even got a playable role in every Super Smash Bros game since its induction in Brawl, so you know someone on staff thinks its really special. Unfortunately, this has the same effect on me that Pikachu and, to a lesser extent, Charizard have, where my relative indifference to the design has grown into irritation thanks to how much it’s been pushed in my face. I’m sorry, Game Freak, but Lucario really doesn’t feel that special, especially when other perfectly marketable humanoid fighters like Blaziken exist as well.
Score: 1/5
Tumblr media
Lucario also becomes part Steel type, for some reason. I forgot to mention that.
Tumblr media
Lucario, predictably, also would get a Mega Evolution, though like Blaziken I am pleased to say it does pretty up its design by a decent margin. Not enough to make Lucario a favorite of mine, but well enough to where I don’t hate looking at it anymore.
The more jagged, uneven streaks of black all over its body remove most of the weird, solid bands of black it previously had, though it still has the rings around its shoulders. The yellow chest fur flaring out and completely replacing the tail is a great improvement, and the legs actually conforming to singular shapes is much appreciated as well. Lucario still has weird dreadlocks, unfortunately, and its mouth has remain unchanged, but I’ll take what I can get.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It helps that when Mega Lucario was shown off in the anime, it was given a lot of exaggerated, strained expressions (that thankfully hid its mouth) and made its head appear much more animalistic than it is normally. Mega Lucario was also portrayed as a bloodthirsty, ruthless fighter, than the otherwise stoic, disciplined personality regular Lucario is typically saddled with. One of its unique Pokedex entries even punctuates its new personality with one word, “heartless.” This is far more interesting, if you ask me, and feels pretty accurate to what it would be like if a feral wolf did indeed somehow learn martial arts. And the ability to fire energy spheres from its paws, I guess.
Score: 3/5
Tumblr media
There you go, Lucario. Good job getting yourself fixed up.

Riolu and Lucario: Desert Forme
Tumblr media
Based on discussions with Misharu - regional variants of Riolu and Lucario that live in desert regions. The designs are based loosely on Anubis and Wepwawet, as well as basic pharaonic aesthetics. Its evolution is still based on affection, though it evolves at night rather than day.
Riolu dex entry 1: Despite Riolu's mournful appearance, it is energetic and inquisitive and trains regularly in combat. It loves to sit on the prow of boats and look out over the water.
Riolu dex entry 2: Riolu's sensitivity to Aura and spirits allows it to find hidden items and secret passages. In old days, it was known as The Wayfinder.
Lucario dex entry 1: Though not a ghost itself, this forme of Lucario is closely attuned to spirits and can behave like a spectre. Its sharp gaze seems almost judgmental.
Lucario dex entry 2: The bony protrusions on its wrists, ankles, and tail take on bright colors from minerals in the surrounding desert. Its tail rattles softly as it moves about.
Background adapted from photographer Embalu on Morguefile.

Riolu and Lucario are some of the most frequent patients at Sinnoh's Pokemon Centers because of their tendency to overwork themselves. Being Fighting type, they already have intense training routines, but they also don't pay as much attention to their physical limits and often keep fighting just to prove their loyalty to a Trainer. It doesn't help that they tend to have lower defenses as well. Fortunately, they heal quickly and easily.

Another PMD Hero/Partner team, I don’t think I’ll really write much for them, the main PMD characters for me are Rusty & Whisper, but I still wanna mention little things about these new ones-
Hero:
Name: Cloud
Pokémon: Riolu
Pronouns: None
Cloud is mute, and communicates through sign language.
-
Partner:
Name: Storm
Pokémon: Chimchar
Pronouns: Xe/Xem/Xemself
The two combined names, making the exploration team name ‘Team StormCloud’.

Also requesting my favourite pokemon, Lucario!
Tumblr media
Oh DANG, it’s Lucario!!!!!!
Lucario’s HUGE. Literally the second-most-beloved pokemon in the franchise according to the Pokemon of the Year poll, Lucario represents a perfect storm of factors all coming together to result in an ASTOUNDING degree of popularity. It’s…..rly big. For comparison, Pikachu got 19th in that same poll.
Tumblr media
It all started with a movie, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, released about a year before Gen IV’s Diamond and Pearl did, with Lucario being one of the first looks at the upcoming generation. Because Pokemon movies up to this point had featured legendaries, people had assumed Lucario, too, was a legendary, and the movie did little to disconfirm this. It could talk, it had a unique anthropomorphic design unlike most other pokemon seen thus far, and it had special powers that seemed unaffiliated with any particular type, dubbed “aura”. Already a recipe for hype!
Tumblr media
Once Gen IV came out, it became apparent that Lucario was actually just a normal pokemon, a Fighting/Steel-type (for….some reason), even having a pre-evolution in Riolu. But it still felt special: neither it nor Riolu could be found in the wild, with a Riolu egg instead being obtained through an optional sidequest trekking through a cave on Iron Island. You would be accompanied by someone named Riley, whose design harkened to a movie character named Sir Aaron, and who himself used a Lucario. As a reward for your help, he would bestow you with an egg, that would then hatch into Riolu and you could then evolve into Lucario after raising its friendship level.
Tumblr media
Lucario’s popularity was practically sealed. It had a massive amount of marketing through the movie and other media that built up to DP’s eventual release, and when DP finally did come out, Lucario had a perfect balance of difficulty to obtain it with how likely a player was to actually encounter it. It just felt SPECIAL, in a way no other pokemon ever quite has, before or since.
Tumblr media
As a design, I respect Lucario. It’s certainly got some peculiar quirks to it: the anime mouth doesn’t sit right on the face with respect to the snout, the oddly-bent tail feels kinda haphazardly glued on, the aesthetic of wearing parachute shorts is kinda weird, and the only allusion to it being Steel-type seems to be its rather nonsensical spikes. But an anthropomorphic blue jackal with a clear Anubis-inspired silhouette is undeniably cool, and I feel positively toward it overall despite some odd decisions. And I actually like the dreads!
Tumblr media
Naturally, it would later be a recipient of a Mega Evolution in XY, and a pretty alright one overall. However, one result of its popularity led to it missing part of what made it so popular in the first place: all players would receive one from a gym leader as a natural part of XY’s story. Appropriate for such an iconic pokemon to introduce Mega Evolution, sure, but it made it apparent how much of that “special” aspect Lucario had since lost. Being gifted one for free just didn’t hit right. As a design, Mega Lucario’s red markings feel a bit excessive, and I’m not as into it as I am the base design. It’s not bad, though, and the floofy tail’s an improvement.
Tumblr media
Lucario’s shiny swaps the blue and yellow, albeit with the yellow now a more unnatural citrus tone. Suitably distinct from the base form, but not really an improvement. Mega Lucario keeps the general colour scheme, but shifted darker into a rather unpleasant olive shade.
Overall, I like Lucario. It’s got some weird aesthetic choices, but on the whole it’s pretty neat and VERY iconic. I don’t particularly vibe with it myself these days, but I definitely understand those who do, and I find its immense popularity both justified and unsurprising.
Also same Eng VA as Goku/10.
