narrator voice: brutus was not.
this is playing off a few things historically: that a lot of cassius' early life before his introduction into the military/political theater under crassus during the doomed parthian campaign is non existent, which also means that this space is my sandbox to play it!
my favorite historical pairs to work with (in regards to romans, anyway) tend to fit into a gladiator/statesman dynamic, so cassius and brutus, agrippa and octavian, but also pompey and crassus fit into that mold as well (even when they're fighting with each other, the behaviors and methods they use tend to reflect the general thematic archetype)
what's really fun to sink my teeth into is how one of cassius' strengths (knowing when to step back) is also a great flaw because he consistently gave way to brutus, but brutus wasn't a good general and he's not the greatest decision maker, and letting brutus make the call frequently resulted in Worse Consequences. and somehow. brutus goes down in history as the idealized figure. what a fucking tragedy!

A Conspirator's Realism: Cassius Settles for the Second Rank, Luciano Canfora
this scene would.......probably take place around the same time brutus is having his hot girl summer being a loan shark to compliment his historical counterpart's financial adventures in salamis.

CYCLES OF VIOLENCE AND REVENGE
or: a scene where sulla and crasso measure each other up and decide to use each other
republikang romano remixed returns!
ALRIGHT SO the historical parallel for scene is crassus siding with & supporting sulla during sulla's civil war. the very brief summary of events are that crassus' family were victims to political violence (cinna, marius) while crassus survived on account of his age and went on to give everyone a very bad day.
but this is also fiction, it's set in the philippines, I get to throw in some teleserye drama if I want to.
originally, the line about crasso's age was supposed to be, 'you WERE so young,' but I fucked up the tense and wrote 'you ARE so young,' by accident. which is. not wrong, crasso is in his early-mid 20s here. he IS young, and it adds in some fun subtext because sulla's going to fuck crasso over later and turn his attentions to pompeyo, who is younger than crasso. subtext, baby!
speaking of the philippines tho, the thing about the tapping and the chicks is that if someone is murdered, you put chicks on the casket because the tapping of the pecking is supposed to eat away at the guilty party's conscience. it's also eating away at crasso because he's haunted (read: traumatized) by being forced to watch his family get murdered. the chicks are just vibing.

testing out some brushes I think I want to use for when I actually start posting bad governance in narrative order, which took a slight detour because I had to do some math with character ages and events and oh I hate doing math so much
so! do you ever realize you're definitely going to get dumped but you're stuck waiting it out because you're not really in a position to do anything about it except sit there and deal with it
ofc you can always just. ditch the party.
this is playing off of the historical dynamic between sulla, pompey, and crassus because sulla sure loved playing favorites, and it was never crassus. however a man doesn't need to be a favorite to make use of him, etc etc and favoritism doesn't last forever, but I'll get into that later

At any rate, from this or some other cause (Augustus) became ill, and sending for his associates, he told them all his wishes, adding finally: "I found Rome of clay; I leave it to you of marble." He did not thereby refer literally to the appearance of its buildings, but rather to the strength of the empire. Cassius Dio 56.30
ALRIGHTY SO I actually decided midway through this scene to re-do the entire thing to parallel an earlier scene where two men make a promise to each other that has horrifying after consequences for everyone else (because when those in power make deals for their own gain, it's people who never had a say who suffer for it)
this was like, 70% finished when I decided to rewrite the scene, so I'm posting it anyway bc I still kind of like it. meet Vipsanio and Octavio! (based on the historical Octavian and Agrippa)
so while I'm ultimately scrapping this scene, I do think there is something fun to what resembles a love confession to a childhood friend while waiting for a late night bus manifesting later as something truly awful. like, this looks like a confession of love and a promise of devotion, but what it actually is: a promise to inflict whatever violence octavio wants onto whoever gets in his way.
what I'm saying is that vipsanio is going to be the executioner to octavio's future EJK reign of terror (with anthony, since that'll be the narrative arc paralleling to the historical octavian and mark antony's use of proscriptions)

a gritty filipino drama but it's also the late roman republic
you know how the iron heart has all their characters named the way they are? same idea, except I'm also speed running the narrative arc of the late roman republic and throwing it right into the crime/gangster genre
this "photo" of the three of them is probably a little bit haunted too, lbr.

crasso has +100% immunity to any and all rumors, but he draws the line at anything that might cause people to think that ciceron is the father of either of his kids. anyone else would be fine, but he draws the line at ciceron on account of Disliking Ciceron So So SO Much
so!! I finished the first draft of bad governance! which means now I get to edit everyone's dialogue and sometimes during the course of editing, you come across a scene that accidentally sounds like a B plot to a teleserye (you know how they can get). like, I know i have to cut it from the final draft, but it can live on as a comic for my own amusement
the historical dynamic this is based on is extremely funny to me btw

unintentionally this gets into some historical parentage drama, cicero made about publius' (peter, in this story) father being someone other than crassus

Plutarch, Cicero
(the running bit for bad governance is that no one is entirely sure what's going on with crasso's household. crasso calls marcus and peter his sons, but marcus rotates between calling crasso 'dad,' 'kuya,' 'tiyo,' and 'nanay.' no one in that house clarifies anything to anyone else.)

to follow up crasso, pompeyo, and cesar: a "newspaper article" on cassio and brutus!
in a shoutout to both shakespeare and his historical counter part (regarding the thematic importance of his eye sight) cassio's got glasses! his eyes are sensitive to bright lights (fucking RIP buddy) so he wears sunglasses all the time. this is a surprise tool that will help us later. not him, tho.
EDIT: AH. It should read: a very public falling out. oh well! next time I'll proof read it, probably. I just wanted to draw Cassio 😔
