Larry Taylor was born in 1942 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He grew up in a family and community that emphasized the importance of military service. His great-great-grandfather fought in the Civil War, his great-uncle in World War I and his father and uncles in World War II. 

Larry Taylor joined the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Upon graduation in June 1966, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve, then joined the regular Army in August, volunteering as an armor officer.

After graduating from the U.S. Army Armor School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Taylor quickly realized he was better suited to be a pilot than an armor officer. He had already obtained a fixed-wing pilot's license before joining the Army and thought that experience would make it easier to learn rotary-wing flying. 

After receiving permission to train as a helicopter pilot, he attended the U.S. Army Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas, and then advanced helicopter training at Fort Rucker (renamed Fort Novosel in 2023), Alabama, where he qualified as an Army aviator in June 1967.

Taylor served in Vietnam from August 1967 to August 1968, flying some of the first Bell AH1-G Cobra attack helicopters in combat. Serving with D Troop (Air), 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Taylor flew over 2,000 combat missions in UH-1 and Cobra helicopters. He was engaged by enemy fire 340 times and was forced down five times. The U.S. Army awarded him at least 50 combat decorations, including the Silver Star, 43 Air Medals, a Bronze Star and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He also received the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star.

 Among his many harrowing operations, the most dangerous and frightening took place on June 18, 1968, when he rescued a four-man long range patrol team at significant risk to his own life. For his heroic actions that night, the Army awarded him the Silver Star, which President Joe Biden upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2023. Taylor concluded his military service as a captain with the 2nd Armored Cavalry in West Germany. 

After his Army service, he operated a successful roofing and sheet metal company in Chattanooga and was involved with several veterans' organizations. He has also been a generous donor to charitable nonprofit organizations in the Chattanooga area. Taylor and his wife, Toni, reside in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

Pentagon approves lethal weapons package for South Korean F-35s

The strategic movement strengthens the alliance between the two nations and deters regional aggression.

In a diplomatic and defense development, the U.S. Department of State gave the green light to a foreign military sale, approving the acquisition by the Republic of Korea of advanced ammunition and related equipment for F-35 fighters.

Valued at $271 million, this agreement underlines the commitment to regional stability and improves the defense capabilities of the Republic of Korea.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) formally informed Congress about the approved sale, which includes a series of advanced weapons, such as the AIM-120C-8 medium-range advanced air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM), the direct-attack joint missiles (JDAM) of the GBU ammunition series (GBU-31v1 JDAMs, GBU-31v3 JDAMs and GBU-54 LJDAMs), GBU-12 Paveway II and small-diameter bombs (GBU-39 SDB-I and GBU-53 SDB-II). The Republic of Korea's request for this arsenal aims to improve its fleet of fighters and ensure compatibility with U.S. forces.

South Korea is introducing 40 F-35A Lightning II fighters and has confirmed a new order for 20 units to improve its air combat capabilities. South Korea also showed interest in acquiring a small fleet of 20 F-35B Lightning II aircraft, the F-35 short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft.

This strategic move aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives and national security objectives, reinforcing an alliance with a key actor in the Indo-Pacific region. The sale is positioned to face existing threats and effectively equip the Republic of Korea to face future challenges.

Maintaining ties in the Indo-Pacific region is of great strategic value to the U.S. Armed Forces, as they seek to contain Chinese military expansion and protect allied states such as Taiwan.

Crucially, the proposed sale emphasizes the U.S. commitment to maintaining the military balance in the region. Despite the substantial firepower involved, it is stated that the acquisition will not disturb the balance of power.

The companies Lockheed Martin Corporation, Raytheon Missiles and Defense and The Boeing Company are identified as the main contractors of this ammunition agreement.

While improving the defense capabilities of the Republic of Korea, this development marks a step in strengthening regional security, while maintaining the diplomatic balance.

South Korea has strengthened its defense capabilities with two recently approved arms agreements. First, the U.S. approved the sale of 38 units of Standard Missile-6 Block I to South Korea, valued at $650 million. On the evening of August 23, Wagner Group leader Evgeny Prigozhin’s private plane crashed in Russia’s Tver region, northwest of Moscow. Ten people were killed in the crash, three of them members of the plane’s crew. According to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, the passenger list included both Yevgeny Prigozhin and Wagner commander Dmitry Utkin. The official cause of the incident is still unknown. Meduza spoke to journalist Denis Korotkov, who has covered Prigozhin and Wagner Group for many years, about what made the Wagner founder’s death possible and what will become of his mercenaries now.

Do you think the plane was shot down or blown up from the inside? 

I’m not an aviation accident specialist, and I’m reluctant to draw conclusions from the few photos that have appeared in the public domain. Based on the available information, we can assume that the plane exploded at a high altitude. Either there was an explosion on board, or it was hit with an anti-aircraft missile. The only thing I can say is that you need a pretty decent anti-aircraft missile complex to shoot down a plane at that altitude.

Why did Prigozhin’s personal security fail?

If we’re talking about a missile, personal security can’t do anything about it. As for the possibility that someone got explosives on board, I don’t know how security works aboard the jet Mr. Prigozhin flew on. But you don’t need a huge amount of explosives to bring down a plane, especially such a small jet.

Do you know if Prigozhin took any extra security measures in the past two months following his aborted rebellion?

How seriously Prigozhin took his own security is an open question. When he wasn’t in the trenches, he was always hanging out close to the front. He visited various dangerous parts of the world. He wasn’t a coward or paranoid. It’s possible that he overestimated the guarantees of his own safety.

Do you think that Andrey Troshev, whom Putin proposed as the new Wagner boss, will take control of Prigozhin’s mercenaries?

I think there are a fair number of people who want to get involved [in running Wagner Group]. It’s possible the authorities will decide to split up the group to various places, or maybe they’ll give it whole to some individual. But in any case, it won’t be Troshev.

Troshev might be installed for show, but the head of any business needs to be a manager who can direct everything, from finances to organization and politics. We don’t know who that might be. I don’t believe it will be possible to maintain the Wagner structure. 

That group could exist only under Prigozhin’s leadership as part of his financial empire. Now, it will either cease to exist or it will devolve into one or several shady organizations, which, as usual, will be plundered. I don’t expect the old level of independence for the private military company [to continue].

What will happen to Wagner Group’s missions in Africa? 

Sudan, the Central African Republic, Mali, and Mozambique each have a different history with Wagner Group. They were united in large part only by the personality of Mr. Prigozhin. So it won’t work just to take the contracts and rewrite them — the processes are a bit more complicated.

In any case, I don’t think that everything will stay the same, just with a different figure leading. Financing, logistics, freedom to make decisions, and leadership hierarchy will all totally change. And then, as I said, it will get plundered and fall apart.

What will happen to fighters currently employed by Wagner Group? 

People who are at home relaxing will be able to think about what to do next. People in Belarus — we’ll see. I think they’ll split up and go home soon unless Lukashenko finds some use for them. But I seriously doubt he will — there isn’t anything for them to do there or anything to pay them. Those who are in Africa will continue working for some time just due to inertia. If a decision is made to re-enlist them, they’ll be re-enlisted, and then they’ll scatter or be gradually killed off there.

If those projects don’t continue, they’ll be evacuated. However, there are real logistical issues. If we assume the list of those killed [on board] the flight is accurate, that means the decisionmaker [Prigozhin] has died, and the main organizer of finances and logistics, Valery Chekalov, has also died. The death of Mr. Utkin doesn’t play a big role, but it’s still a blow in terms of the general mess.

Why doesn’t Uktin’s death play a big role? 

He was just one commander — they’ll install another one. He had trained soldiers who can take over his position.

Like who? 

Like Alexander Kuznetsov, the commander of the assault troops. Or Anton Yelizarov. There are three or four assault troop commanders who could, theoretically, take Utkin’s place.

You said that the person who was responsible for the financial component of Wagner Group was killed. Will that affect payments to active fighters?

Of course. That’s one of the problems with an unincorporated private military company. All its obligations exist only informally. If the relatives of a deceased Wagner fighter haven’t received payments, it’s not guaranteed that they ever will. It’s the same with wounded fighters and with those who are now finishing missions in Africa.

Their money was guaranteed by Prigozhin personally. Their salaries came in the form of bags of cash distributed under the table. Prigozhin guaranteed them and was interested in fulfilling his obligations. And he did. But who’s interested in that now? 

Do you think these events could cause a schism in the army?

No. Much more serious contradictions than Prigozhin’s murder currently stress the army. Soldiers worry about much more serious problems than Prigozhin’s fate. There are logistical failures, failures with combat training and combat itself, shortages of basic necessities, and more complex problems with troop rotations. So there may be a schism in the army, but Prigozhin’s death won’t be the cause or even an excuse.

Did you, personally, believe that Prigozhin would be killed after his failed rebellion? 

It was very likely that he would be killed. Where and when were not obvious. The pointedness of the method is surprising. The prevailing opinion is that Vladimir Putin killed him, regardless of the political affiliations. Not personally, but still. And then, for example, the flight attendant on board had nothing to do with anything. If Prigozhin had been on a regular flight, would they have resorted to shooting down the whole plane?

New images have shown the destruction to what was the world’s largest cargo plane, the Antonov An-225, following Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

At 84-meters long and 175 metric tons without fuel and cargo, the aircraft was the longest and heaviest operational plane in the world. It had a maximum take-off weight of 640 tons. The aircraft was incredibly popular with aviation enthusiasts and people often visited airports to see its scheduled arrivals and departures. It was also a symbol of national pride for Ukraine.

The unique plane, which completed its first flight in 1988, was ruined after Russian missiles attacked the Hostomel Airfield on the fringes of Kyiv. It was destroyed on or about Feb. 27, 2022.

Ukrainian forces regained control of the airfield on April 2 following a large-scale Russian withdrawal along the Kyiv axis. It’s unclear what will happen to the wreckage now.

The AN-225 was sometimes drafted in to help airlift aid during crises in other countries. In the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake it delivered relief supplies to the neighboring Dominican Republic. During the early days of the Covid pandemic it was used to transport medical supplies to affected areas.

Its popularity in the aviation world meant it often drew large crowds wherever it went, particularly when it made star appearances at air shows.

Some of its fans took to social media on Sunday to express their dismay at claims of the aircraft's destruction. "Mriya - You will always be remembered!" wrote aviation blogger Sam Chui on Twitter.

To this day, Mriya remains the heaviest aircraft ever built. Powered by six turbofan engines, she has a maximum payload weight of 250 tonnes, which can be carried inside or on its back. It boasts the largest wingspan of any airplane in operational service.

Only one An-225 was ever built by the Kiev-based Antonov company, which came up with the design. It first took flight in 1988 and has been in service ever since.

The Luftwaffe took advantage of the transfer of the Tactical Squadron (TLG) 71 Richthofen from the German Air Force from Wittmund to Laage for a joint "Elephant Walk" with TLG 73 Steinhoff.

During this unusual "Elephant Walk" at the end of the year there were 23 Eurofighters of the TLG 73 S and 12 Eurofighters of the TLG 71 R. The motto was: "Strong together!".

The Eurofighters of Tactical Squadron 71 "Richthofen" will have to move to Laage by 2024 because their base is being largely renewed.

The Wittmund track is being renovated. The repair rooms will also be adjusted to the standards necessary for Eurofighters. The squadron's infrastructure dates back to the time when the F-4 Phantom were still stationed in Wittmund.

Most of the work should be completed in 2024 and the space should be ready for the relocation of the jets.
