“Everything we see hides another thing,” 2022, polished bronze sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas on view at Jack Shainman Gallery. I like the reference to Magritte’s 1928 painting “The Lovers II,” pictured second. Hank Willis Thomas is showing in both Shainman gallery spaces and is on view through October 29th. #hankwillisthomas #sculpture #bronze #bronzesculpture #jackshainmangallery #magritte #renemagritte #thelovers #arthistory #contemporaryart (at Jack Shainman Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci71WJPriDN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey Jude!
Ceci n’est pas Le Beatles
Rene Magritte's painting, "The Son of Man," holds profound significance in its exploration of hidden and visible elements, a theme emphasized by Magritte himself. The obscured face behind the hovering green apple symbolizes the constant interplay between what is apparent and what lies beneath, inviting viewers to consider the tension between the seen and the hidden.
Fast forward to 1968 when the sliced apple, revealing its core, became the logo for the record company Apple, releasing the Beatles' iconic song "Hey Jude!" The juxtaposition of Magritte's apple and the Beatles' record intertwines artistic realms, connecting visual symbolism with cultural expression.
"Hey Jude!" and its B-side, "Revolution," introduce political and cultural overtones. The lyrics of "Revolution" challenge societal norms and advocate for change, reflecting the turbulent socio-political landscape of the late 1960s. This resonates with Magritte's exploration of hidden truths, as the Beatles' songs become a vehicle for expressing dissent and pushing against the visible but concealed structures of the time.
The fusion of Magritte's symbolic apple with the Beatles' record adds layers of meaning, suggesting a shared ethos of questioning established norms. Both creations engage in a dialogue about the seen and the unseen, making the seemingly mundane—whether an apple or a song—vehicles for profound cultural reflection and challenge. The evolution from Magritte's canvas to the Beatles' record marks a dynamic interplay between visual art, music, and societal discourse, underscoring the enduring power of symbolism in shaping collective consciousness.
